View Full Version : Is this possible with Kickstart?

I don't think this is possible with kickstart but I thought I'd ask just to make sure.

Is it possible to make dependent kickstart profiles. That is, can you make kickstart add-on profile that can only be selected if another kickstart add-on profile is selected first?

This is just an example but let's say you have lights that are adjusted for the fog effects in the jDEP. And let's say you only want those lights to be selectable if you select the jDEP first. Can a profile be written to do this?

Probaly posible,

In Risen3D :) you can have profiles and the curent version of Risen3D :) is based partly on jDoom.

thegrimmling: thats not what hes talking about, hes talking about dependant profiles, not profiles in general. KS has the functionality for exlcusionary addon profiles (ie you can only have one of the same type of addon selected at the time) but i dont think it has the other way around, with the addon being selectable only if another profile has been selected. it CAN make addon profiles mandatory, but only through the use of game profiles, so as far as i know what you want is not in the current version of KS. sorry man.

<wishes for someone to take up tools programming: kickstart, the model converter, etc>

lechtansi,

That's what I was thinking. BTW, I saw your posts about the Kickstart profiles you made. I've been doing the same thing, I just didn't think anyone would really be that interested in them.

What I wanted to with this "dependent" profile idea was pack the old jDoom Model Pack into a PK3 and run it using a Kickstart profile. (Originally, models and deds were all distributed in different directories.) That way I can choose between this old pack and the jDRP. Well, that part I can and have done. But the old model pack had other options too like more blood, alternate monsters, etc. I wanted to have those options as add-on profiles but have them only available as options when the old jDoom Model Pack is chosen as an add-on. It's not that I can't run the old pack with those options without this feature, but having it be able to do that would just be a lot cleaner and foolproof to run I think. As it is now, if someone came up with a new model pack or some new special effect that might conflict with these options, I'd have to edit one or more of those profiles to prevent conflicts.

yeah, the KSA's arent anything special, i just figured there were other people like me who didnt want to have to move the files out of their auto directory everytime they wanted to test something, so i put em up.

again, its currently impossible to do what you want right now, but perhaps if someone takes over KS development we can add it (it certainly makes sense).

In Risen3D you can have profiles and the curent version of Risen3D is based partly on jDoom.

Since risen is totally based on a broken 1.7.7 Doomsday build (no hexen/heretic support) it is now pretty much irrelevent to Doomsday - Besides the issue is with the Kickstart front end - which basically needs a major update, I don't use it at all.

What you could do is create two game profiles. One which is your main Doom install and another for testing purposes.

BTW the moreblood etc addons that where in the original modelpack will make a comeback in the jDRP soon.

It is starting to get very annoying all these KickStart issues. I hope someone will be able to take the reigns on this :(.

Slide - How is your own Doomsday launcher coming on? What's the possibilites of you releasing it?

The problem is I used Visual studio.net for my normal version so you'll need the framework for it to work.

However I've started doing a flash version - so we can get a swanky looking native win32 app for not too much effort.

Flash MX 2004 has really good XML parsers so I might make a ksa alike format in XML.

But with the real life, the jDUI, the mch delayed abbs pack update and hundreds of other projects nothing ever seems to get finished :(

Maybe I should go AWOL for 3 months too :D

Now THAT would be one hell of a swanky launcher :D.
You could make it so that you could use flash skins as well ;)

LOL

Hey Slide,

If you don't use Kickstart, what do you use?

Are there any better alternatives? I was looking at KDX but don't know much about it.

I used to use the command line - but now I use a custom app (that Dani alluded to) that uses response files.

ohhh, ohhh! share! (Win XP comes with the framework, I think, but I know that I have it, and Im sure there are others, and it cant be WORSE!)
think of it as beta testing!
