BUT, must be detailed and error free
you MAY use boom or zdoom to get rid of doom limits like visplane overflows and stuff

Yeah, FS wou;d get in the way of such a wad probably (wow, this coming from an FS addict...). Boom compatibility is probably a good idea. Most good ports are Boom compatible and it really lets you add detail without adding all this fancy crap. Will also run on just about any conceivable system. Even Mac and Linux. ZenNode is a must as well. Good nodes = better maps. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smile.gif

I'd contribute a map. You just tell me these specifics:

1. Style (Hell, Tech, Inbetween)
2. Difficulty

I can map greatly using ZDoom and Doom2. From all the Boom talk, does that mean I can make it for ZDoom and use scripting? If so, that's even better!

Maps Must Be For Plain Doom2 (no port)

Maps Must Be As Error Free As Possible

You May use Boom Or Zdoom to Get Rid Of Doom Limits Like Visplanes ( or any other port )

No New Spirits,Music,Sounds,or Textures Just Stick With Stuff From Doom2.wad

There Is No Size Limit But Dont Make A Tiny Tiny Or Mega Huge Map

Difficulty Is Inbetween Easy-Hard

And You May Use Any Style/Theme

Ah, to make a Vanilla Doom2 map (The term used for regular Doom 2 maps, since the ports have kinda overran the regular wads). I haven't done that forever, I've been making so many Doom64 type levels lately (Check this out (http://www.geocities.com/fly_taggart2002/Dark_Nexus)), it'd be a site for sore eyes.

Now to decide what style of level to make...

I say that you guys should be using Legacy or Zdoom with scripted in the levels...

What kind of bull is that??? ZenNode is a tiny little file too. If you want I can e-mail it to you or something. Or if you e-mail me I can send you instructions on how to download it without him noticing. I just need to know your windows version (if you're using windows).

I was just thinking it would be nice if we could use the extra linedef types in BooM. They just add some variation to what was already in the game.

Too bad we can't use a texture wad for this that's a unification of textures from both DooMs. They ripped a lot of the good tech textures of out DooM II that were supposed to compliment some of the others. Problem is, it's technically a legal issue to do that.

You can make great levels by old doom2 engine, especially if the limitations are removed.

My our standards the original maps aren't prefessional looking. Even Romero made next to no attempts at texture alignment. Maybe his editor sucked. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/wink.gif

I wanna make a cool tech level (probably do some design tomorrow) but I miss a few of the comp textures they took out when they made DooM II. Grrr.

Okay, I have an idea, let's divide the game into episodes! 30 reg levels, that's 10 levels for each. I'll do the entry to hell, it'd be Map 11. Either way, I'll do Map 11 and Map 21. How's that? BTW, Let's post a list of mappers so far.

My map's going to be marblish :P. I've already started on it, and I'll tell myself it looks pretty good. You guys may think otherwise when it's done, but I think it's neat so far... As for difficulty for my map, I'll have it like this

IM TOO YOUNG TO DIE: very easy
HURT ME PLENTY: Hard
ULTRA-VIOLENCE: Very Hard

Okay, I have a urban street type map almost finished (a rehashed old map). Im willing to knock out a few more in different styles.

Just allocate a few level numbers to me I cant be bothered choosing. I will make them in the same texture style as the originals.

Oh, it isnt a TC, its not using new sprites or new textures etc so its 'merely' a new megawad.

no, not all maps will be possible to finish with a pistol, maybe the first 5 maps

but dont make like 2 monters by 50 sectors http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smilies/cwm12.gif or dont make it impossible to finish
give reasonable amounts of ammo and health

If my internet is up at my house this weekend, I'll post a screen shot.

I've been doing all of my internet browsing from school in an hours time. It sucks. Except Wendesday and Thursday I stayed until five due to some extensive online trading.

I can however give you a description:

The Morgue- a very dark level, uses alot of lighting variations. I may add you're lucky we aren't using ports, or I'd use the ZDoom Phantom zombies in alot of places. That's all I'll say, you guys will like it either way. However, I request that I can put a space sky into it, if I don't it won't look good, because there's alot of places that have openings in the ceiling. I'm sorry, but I can't stand that sky texture that's originally in the map. So, may I suggest that we can add reasonable sky textures and midis? In a way, if it's a community project, we need a way to personalize our maps, to distinguish who made one from another. All I ask is that I can add a midi and a sky texture!

I think all my new stuff is closer to John Romero than Sandy Peterson. I don't know if it's as good as Romero but I certainly got lots of ideas from him.

I don't have a name for this map yet. It's a computer map and it's going to be a bloodbath with lots of hidden monsters popping out and quite dark. That said, it's not going to be too hard cause I'm not as god at DooM as some of the people here.

That sounded a bit confusing. Anyway, I'll try and just explain a door as simply as I can. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smile.gif

First, imagine you have 3 sectors in a row. The middle is the door. It's ceiling height is set to the same as it's floor. Then you make the lines on the front and back into a door type (type 1 will work for this). This will make a door that opens revealing whatever sector is behind it. If you don't want the textures inside the door frame to move up with it then set "Lower unpegged" in the linedef dialog for those walls. Of course the upper textures of the front and back of the door have to be set to something you want.

Should be easy to make doors in DeePsea because you shouldn't have to swap sidedefs after building the sectores (if you've never used DEU then don't ask what this means and does cause you don't want to know. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/wink.gif).

DeePsea has a function to make a door out of a sector but I've never used it and I don't know how it works.

I said I was tempted to make some. For now I'm just using the original DooM II textures for my Lavaplant map. Sparky said not to use new textures earlier on in this topic....

As long as two people don't give their texture the same name it should work. For example, I usually use WALL1, WALL2, etc.

If two people do use the same name it just means that there will be more work for the person compiling it.

Thats ok, Im used to farting about with texture wads.

This thing looks like it might be a bit special.

NINJA, I will try and find some easy to follow instructions for basic stuff like doors, teleports, windows etc. You might want to visit Doomworld, there are some really good tutorials there but Im not sure if they cover basic stuff

Bah, Doom2 and it's crap textures.

I was having a hell of a time getting my level to look right, until I realized those monkeys at id for some STUPID reason decided not to include several very nice Doom1 textures in Doom2.

Once I incorporated those Doom1 textures, my level started to take some shape.

I really hope this isn't going to be a problem. They don't replace any of the Doom2 textures. I've also seen this done before in other wads that have been released. Some of them are even the main archives.

In short, without these new textures my map just won't look right.

The good news is, I don't need any new flats, as I have all I need from the Doom2.wad.

I am using some of those cement textures as a matter of fact. With the right lighting and combination with certain other textures they can be made to look quite good.

The only problem I have with replacing skys is that everyone would have to use that particular sky if there level was a certain number. But if everyone can agree on some skys, then maybe we can replace them.

hmmm, heres the problem... i wasent planning on making it 32 maps cus if you want to do that who ever does map 16 needs to add a secret exit and you would need to add a secret exit in map 31 too

Hmmm, I was going to rip a bunch of orginal DooM textures as well. My computer-tech level thing is coming along nicely (although not quite as fast as Stphrz's map) but man is it getting repetitive sometimes. I have a big maze just plastered with COMPTALL and COMPWERD.

How to you remove textures from a wad and import them as a whole? I don't really want to rebuild all those DooM textures from their individual patches. In fact, I'd have to teach myself that again if I did it. Or can Stphrz send me his texture wad? That might be a good plan actually since it would mean the name would be consistent.

ahem you can still have maps 31 and 32... just have the guy(s) making map 15 and 31 use a secret exit switch instead of the regular exit switch. That's what I did with Vilecore when I didn't want to have 'secret' levels but wanted 32 maps...

That's if you don't mind going from map15 to 31 to 32 and then back to 16....... to continue on through 17, 18 and finally ending at map 30.

Tell me about it! Reworking existing / once considered finished maps is a royal pain in the assholio. Making from scratch is easier on the brain cell. That's why I decided to make new maps for Vilecore II rather than doing revamps of the 32 originals.

My map is coming along happily. I think it's going to be sort of a medium-sized jobby. There's really only one area left that I'm almost completely clueless about. I've got more figured out with architecture than gameplay right now.

I really need to figure out how to get some more of those E1 tech textures though. Some parts of my map are modelled after Romero-style computer rooms and they need that thing that's a cross between COMPBLUE and COMPSPAN. I don't know how to import the patches AND the textures so they work like they did originally though. I can get the patches in AS textures but that will screw with stuff.

BTW: I made a strobing Romero computer maze that everyone will be scared of. Only difference is mine is bigger and has gameplay on two levels in sort of a 3D way. Strobe is also more painful in mine. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/tongue.gif

No, that's not right. DD used this trick in Vilecore. On map15 and map31 you just use the secret exit linedefs instead of the normal ones. You can have 32 maps without having secret levels. You don't need any fancy source port gizmos. I agree that we should do this. Makes it seem more complete to have all the maps replaced. What? Are you saying the secret exit switches don't work in vanilla doom?

If I put a switch_secretexit in map 15 (instead of a switch_exit).. I'm sure it's going to take me to map30 port or no port. Maybe I'm wrong. Now I'm confused..

Actually take me out of that new slot. I'm not bored with my map I just thought I should get a new slot. But now someone else can have it. I'm still doing map 01 though make no mistake about it. I like it so far I've done a few rooms but it still looks rather bland until i'm finished it. It's now got a name called "killing floors" and I've got one in so far. The second one is at the end. The first one will show you how good you are in a tight space in a fight. I've sent you the map DD. Feel free to post some screenies. They wanted it hard so I made it hard. Wow, alot's happened since I'm gone.

Great! We can use new textures! It's a good thing, because I already ripped and am using several Doom 1 textures and Final Doom textures. Sorry, but when I have a desire to create nothing blocks it.

No one's mentioned anything about specific skies. Hmm, how about this:

Space Sky (Has stars mainly) from Final Doom
Red Sky (Doom 1 Episode 2: Shores of Hell)
Third Sky???

The best of the Doom skies, in my opinion.

Now, as for my maps, they are well under way, but you have NO IDEA how hard it's been for me to use Doom 2 textures, I've been editing Doom 64 style levels for Dark Nexus for so long, it's really odd. I'll go off looking for a Doom 64 tech texture for The Morgue, and go "D'oh! No D64! Aaahh!" However, with the way I use the lighting it's still good, but I have one request Sparky:

PLease let me use a midi I found in Final Doom, it fits perfectly for The Morgue.

Also, progress has been going smoothly enough on Deep and Molten Crevice, that I've decided to take Level 29. I'll call it "Believe." THe main reason behind the name is because Disturbed's new CD, entitled "Believe," is awesome, and I've been listening to it while editing levels.

Okay, another question, it says we may use Boom or ZDoom to get rid of evil visplain overflow erros. Now, also, you say it's for plain Doom2 and not for a port. Does not those rules contradict the other?

Beats me! I thought the ZenNode requirement would take care of any visplain errors.

Hey Ninja I checked out your map. It's kinda hard for a first map. I mean you have Hellknights and a Pain Elemental in there already. You have a lot more work to do on this. I'd say you should consintrate on building the map and then adding your monsters. Maybe you should move the map to slot 23 if you plan on it being hard. Oh and that first door goes into the sky. I hope you fix that. The first room looks pretty good with the blood fountain thinghys... You also have some kind of weird error going on in the pain elemental room that ZenNode wouldn't fix.

Thanks for deciding to test my map DD.
If you're talking about that room s wall being 2 sided I only found out and have already fixed it up. Move it on to slot 23 then. I think I did over do the monsters but it was supposed to be hard. I found it relativley simple but just move it to 23 anyway.

What I usually do with doors... when I have a high celing room is make a sector between the high room and the door and make that sector the same height as the door texture. So say you have a outside area that is 256 high, I then make a sector 128 (for the bigdoors) attched to the 256 high area, then make my door sector (so what you have is a doorway sector in between your door and your room). That helps a lot when your connecting areas and looks a lot better.

Meh. I'm going to have to slow down a bit. My map is quite a bit bigger than I had planned, and it's starting to get away from me. (Dontcha hate it when that happens?)

No, these don't conflict. DooM and DooM II have seriously nasty limits on what they will render. If you make architecture that's too complex the game crashes with a visplane over overflow. Using most ports to play the game will fix this issue (basically anything newer than BooM). That's why you don't see very complex rooms in the first 3 episodes of DooM. Up until version 1.666 it would only allow 16 two-sided lines to be visible at one time or you would see a major HOM effect. I once built a room so complex that happened in v1.9. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/wink.gif

Anyway, the idea is this wad can't use port-specific editing features but it can be so full of complex architecture (and piles of sprites) that you need a port to play it. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smile.gif

I've decided my map is going to have mostly smaller monsters since it doesn't have a lot of big open areas. Lots of imps, chaingun dudes and lost souls/cacos I think. And I'm going to use lots of devious placements for them to really shock the player. Works well with the fact that half my map is very very dark. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/biggrin.gif

No you don't have to pay to be hosted here, not for a small doom related site. This site and the finished megawad will be what.... a whopping 10mb if that? Geez that's nothing. It's not like were going to have a lot of files. Anyhow it won't hurt to ask about being hosted here. Spork this project I'm sure is going to take awhile to complete, so don't fret. I bet you get yours done before some of the others. It's great your working on it and that's the main thing. Just keep picking at it whenever you can. You proved you can map with that lava dm wad you released. I'll check out your update later.

Wow!! those are fucking great! great job Exl. I've had a complete design rethink and have gone for a less techie style level and gone with a more monster condo theme. The first 2 rooms look real nice BTW. I'm finding it easier to work with.
I go with that new name as well.

I was wondering how to change the level music cos I want to change level 23's tune to go with my level a bit more. How do I do it?

Expect 1 to 2 screenies from each of my levels:

Level 08: The Morgue
Level 11: Deep
Level 21: Molten Crevice
Level 29: Believe

And just so you know, "Deep" isn't necissarily a hell level http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/wink.gif. Nor a mine type level. It's tech. You'll see why I've named it "Deep" once you play it.

Oh, and I have the solution to the sky problem: MAPINFO files.

Does anyone here use DeePsea? I'm sure they do. I use the mapinfo files to put the sky I want and map name I want. Ask Kaiser, he tought me how to do it. Why don't we just use the Space Sky, the Doom E2 Red Sky, and some other sky, then use mapinfo files to specify one of those? Then, Doom_Dude, you wouldn't have a star sky in your Lava Plant.

That would work if you named the skys sky4-6 so vanilla doom players would have just the normal skys.
