View Full Version : Scariest Monsters in Gaming?
Fallen Man

Who do you think are some of the scariest (non-Doom) monsters in gaming?
I, for one, think that the barnacle from Half-Life is one of 'em. If you weren't paying attention, you'd walk right into its long, lanky grey tongue. Then it'd bring you up into its terrible blackish-red maw and chew your head, eating your brains. And the barnacle just stayed where it was, never moving, except when it had to flex its abhorrent tongue.
Yeah. That one was freaky.

I think the scariest monster is alien from all sort of alien games.
Second scariest is terminator from Terminator: Future Shock.

Not to mention the one of the scariest in film.

The Alien Queen's a scary one but only cos it's big. I used to have the Alien warrior and Alien Queen figures when I was a kid. I saw Aliens last night and think it's definetly the best of them all.
Scariest monster in gaming?. That'll have to be EA then. But in a game it has to be the Garg from Half-Life. I hated that thing.

Yeah, the garg is scary. It took a bunch of explosives to kill that thing.
Another scary monster could be the hybrids from System Shock 2. All the stuff they said ("The harmony is disturbed", etc.) made your hair stand on end. And sometimes when they saw you, a piece of humanity floated to its conciousness, making it say, "I'm...sorry!"

It's definitely Nemesis from Resident Evil 3. He's dressed in black and he's 8 feet tall plus he's the ugliest muther fucker you ever seen. He runs faster than you and sometimes he carries a missle launcher. And he chases you from room to room uttering "STARRRRRRSSS". He's a relentless bastard and killed me many times. But at least he's polite enough to close doors behind him when he chases you through rooms.

Hmm. Never played Resident Evil 3. But Nemisis sounds real scary.
Anohter one I could bring up is the Haunt from the Thief games. This guy could possibly be the scariest monster I've seen in gaming. When he walks around, you hear chains rattling, and if you get near to him, you hear a cacophony of indiscernable whispers. If he suspects that you're around, he says, "Join usssss...Join usss nowwww..." which makes cold run a marathon down your spine. And if he sees you, you hear a ghostly, hellish chorus of evil laughter, and he chases after you with demonic vigilance. He's also an excellent swordfighter.

I've never playeed RE 3 either but I've seen the nemesis in action and it's pretty scary looking.

At the start of System Shock 2, hybrids.
"The many sings to uusss..."
"Your flesh betrays you!"
They sound freaky, they look hellishly mutated, and even with just a lead pipe they're bloody lethal.
Further into SS2, GOD DAMN FREAKN MONKEYS. And no, I'm not talking about the ones you meet at the start of the game. These monkeys cause TRUE fear.
Then there's the spiders... spiders... they're everywhere! Not to mention all the other enemies you meet towards the end of the game, which I won't mention for fear of spoiling both the storyline and your clean underpants.
Oh god what is that!

Ooh *shivers* there were a few in Silent Hill 1 and 2 I didn't like and I don't know if they had any names. Ninja will tell you I scared myself so much with that game, I was in one room and there was a loud smashing glass noise and I just about leapt six foot where I was sitting down! I've seen some watching Ninja play HL that I hate. And maybe really silly but in my gaming youth I had an RPG called Phantasy Star and I hated the flying eyeballs! What it was to be young and easilly scared...

The scariest monster WAS the mutant guard from Blake Stone. That guy would appear from no where and his warped voice would blast through your speakers. Since then I don't find any game monster scary.

Argh! The last boss, Dark Falz, on PS was the worst!! I couldn't beat it and it usually wiped out my party in seconds despite having all the ultimate weapons and had leveled up my characters as much as was possible! God, I wish I hadn't remembered that... that thing gave me nightmares! That game was left unfinished for a good few years until maybe just over a year ago when I dug out the Master System (I still have it!) and finally beat it after having the game for 11 years!

I remember those spiders. Their chitters freaked me out.
Nemesis is freaky looking.
The rumbler was scary, too. If you had the patched version of SS2, you could see someone's face in the mound of flesh that was the thing.
Another monster is Machin Shin from the Wheel of Time game. I explained it in another post:

quote:
...everything was silent and you were almost blind. You were running like heck to get to the next waygate so you wouldn't be caught by Machin Shin, and since some bridges were out, you were led astray. Then you heard a slight wind noise, and you knew that if you tarried about, you would meet your doom. Then a giant wall of blackness, even darker than the Ways themselves, came flying toward you, screaming demented sayings that made your hair stand on end. Then you died (or reloaded as soon as you heard the Black Wind coming).

I've only played and beaten the game twice. I'd have played it a lot more if it weren't for this creature. Every time I play the game, I turn the sound down really low, so I wouldn't hear the hellish sayings crescendo as the thing approached. And if I thought I was taking too long to get to the next waygate, I reloaded my game, even if Machin Shin was nowhere to be heard or seen.

Yeah, I think the SS2 spiders made one of the most unnerving noises I've heard in a game...
That face freaked me out, for the longest time I thought it was an eye or something, and then I got a good close look. Eep.
I think the Half-life headcrabs were scary from pure shock factor, as they'd always turn up at a vent T-intersection and attack you. (Which was fairly often, seeing as 90% of HL is vent crawling :P) First time that happened I nearly jumped out of my seat.

Yeah, the "headcraps" were kind of creepy at first, then just kind of a nuisiance.
Another monster is the zombie from the Thief games. He simply stumbled about, trying to search for a victim. It was the sound that made this one scary. Never before have I heard such creepy (and "realistic") zombie moaning in my life. And when he's searching for you, he breathes through a rotting, eroded throat, trying to make long-dead lungs function.
The female zombie from Thief II had me freaked out so bad that I never went to Necromancer's Spire (the place where it was) again. Not even for the interesting stuff.

I think another candidate for a scary monster is this weird, fatass looking tyrant in Resident Evil: Dead Aim called "Pluto". It looked scary to me. It was bigger than Fat Bastard from Austin Powers and it can jump high. Wouldn't wanna be near him when he lands.

Luigi just fucks my shit right up.
Seriously I'd say that the old lady spirit that is sitting in that one chair in Alone In The Dark 1. You walk into this room, and there is a chair in the middle of it with an old lady's ghost sitting in it, but you don't notice her unless your REALLY paying attention. Needless to say, I bumped the chair then she stood up all freaky like and turned into this wirl wind which chases you till your dead and makes this gawd awful creepy ass sound.
As for the 2nd most creepy, I'd say my 1st encounter with the fire breathing mummy in Return To Castle Wolfenstein, the one that raises out of the fire on the floor. That and the ones mummies that creep up to you in the mist.

Those no-headed kamikaze THINGS from serious sam.. they never stop screaming, even when they haven't even seen you yet, and when theres 50 or so running straight at you, then its quite unnerving

Oh yeah, those things...those things were unnerving, because they would never stop until you or they were dead.
Here's another scary monster: the facehugger from the AvP games. It was a white little spider thingy that was fast and kinda hard to hit. It scares the crap out of you when it leaps toward your face...and even more so when it attaches. In the movies, the facehugger was even more scary.

The Swirly thingeh in the Clinger-winger level of Battletoads, mainly because it makes the game impossible to finish (for the Nintendo, I was able to get past it on Genesis/Megadrive)
Those beheaded kamikazes scare me a bit because when you don't see 'em, you think of Peewee herman :P
In first person shooters, the scariest would be, you guessed it:

Goddamn, I really wanna play Undying, but have no money.
The severed hand from Blood is nasty. Once you have a few of those crawling around you, that's when you really start to freak out. The phantoms are horrid too, they make a really blood-curdling sound.
The flying mines in Terminator:FS are horrible, purely because they are totally silent, and you usually turn round just in time to see one smash into your face. I freaked out the first time I saw a goliath tank too.

I think the TREX from Skynet was pretty damn scary the first time you see it because it's like 4 stories tall and stomps around very loudly. When you finally think you've killed it the freaking legs just keep on moving, trying to crush you to a pulp.
