View Full Version : System Shock II

I just installed today.
Right from the very start (after the training stuff) when you end up on the ship.... the game is CREEPY. Everything is shadowy and you see signs of destruction. The sound immediately makes you think something is close... but your not sure.
I made it as far as your first enemy encounters. A dumb security camera alerted the foe and on restart I snuck up on the camera and beat it up with my pipewrench. Got killed a little later on and thats all I played so far.
Cool game. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/biggrin.gif

"Your song is not our song!" That creeped me out! I only have the demo, started playing a few days ago and only got as far as you just described. The sound with EAX is creepy as hell.... who are these guys, where are they!? AHHH!!!

I love the hybrid's creepiness. I've finished system shock2 two times, and I can tell you this: it absolutely is amazing. It's in my top ten list of greatest games of all time. The ghosts creep me out as well.

Doom_Dude, I come accross something today you might want to check out It's System Shock Rebirth (http://perso.wanadoo.fr/etienne.aubert/sshock/sshock_rebirth.htm)
Apparently it's a Hi-detail model pack for System Shock 2. I can't try it because I don't have the game.

Luckily for me SS2 works well on my P100 http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/biggrin.gif Will try the high-detail pack soon.
I completed the game in 1999 as a marine. I just shot every bastard with my assault rifle. The same with a friend (in the latest patch that adds coop n' stufh.)
I remember spending hours trying to find a keycard in hydrophonics - it happened to be on a corpse (with an assault rifle!)

I killed 2 of them and then went around a corner. The security camera spotted me and 2 came out of nowheres really fast. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/eek.gif
I like how you have to really look around to find stuff that is hidden. I need that hack skill though. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/wink.gif
At the start I wasn't sure what training to take so I kinda guessed. What organisiation is the best to join, the Marines, Navy or OSA?

Christ. I suppose so. It's from a FP perspective. I would say it like a shooter/RPG/adventure game hybrid. It certainly isn't a run and gun kind of game, that's for sure. Click on the link for the hi-res model packs, and check out the screenshots.

Scary or not, if it's not an FPS then I have little interest in it then.

Really? I'm mainly an FPS man myself, but I do get grabbed by other kinds of games sometimes, especially as the FPS genre is getting staler (although I'm still on a mission to collect them all). Well, SS2 has got guns in it, but the focus isn't really on the shooting so it might not be your kind of thing.

It mainly IS a FirstPerson Shooter, with RPG elements, like upgrade your weapon skill. Stealth is vital but not always.

They look kind of horrified to me - thier eyes are nearly popping out of their heads. I dunno, I guess I quite like them. Still wish the midwife was more gory though. Started playing it again today. Man the game rules, who would of ever thought that rampant computers could be so scary? I like the way you get the little game system with cartridges as well - I'd forgotten about that.

Truely sweet game. By some random coincidence, a friend gave me that very link to the high poly models... looks bloody awesome. Although I'd love to see some texture remakes to go with it.
So you're taking the OSA approach? Psi skills are fun, although you can't really rely on them totally. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/wink.gif

It was made in 1999. The reason you probably didn't see it there is because sometimes it's not there. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smilies/cwm36.gif Try another place (Circuit City, perhaps?), or just order it. I've seen it at Costco before. If all else fails, search for it at ebay (I've seen it there for about $8.00 before, but I don't trust ebay, so tread carefully).

Acccck! I wasn't thinking that Hacking something costs nanites everytime you reset the hack.
It ate all my nanites and all I got out of the crate was a rad hypo. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smilies/cwm14.gif

The worst hacking incident was when I first got SS2 - as soon as I had reached hacking level 3 I went to one of the vending machines, hacked it, and thinking that stuff was free once you had hacked it, ordered about 11 psi hypos and loadsa bullets. And blew every single nanite that I had, then saved. Really goddamn unfortunate. I was walking backwards and forwards for ages, to get more nanites from the zombies.
Reaching hacking level 6 is really good, because you can disable security systems, and then hack the turrets to make them target enemies instead.

Not as far as I can remember, but just be as thorough as possible when searching through stuff, because there is quite a few caches of them around. There's sometimes stuff laying on rafters and things as well, so make sure you have the pull psi ability researched (It's only a level 1 psi ability, so it doesn't take too many cyber modules).

LOL, I just remembered the pain of SS2. I ran into SS2 in the store when it first came out, around the time of my birthday. I told my Dad to pick it up for me and tthen proceeded to wait in impatient agony for my birthday. It came, I installed, I screamed. It didn't like my video card. I was fuming for 6 months before I finally got a new video card (a Voodoo Banshee) and got to play it. The game was so much sweeter because I'd been dying to play it for 6 months. I love the parts where you're creeping around and you have like 2 bullets and a broken shotgun. The psychic monkeys scared the piss out of me the first time I ran into them. I remember hiding on the top shelf of the chemical closet listening to them creep closer, then suddenly the door opens and on of them screams at me. SCARY! http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smilies/cwm14.gif

Actually, SS2 isn't abandonware. Abandonware is classified as a game that's been released by the developer to the public domain. Irrational Games hasn't yet, so just buy it.
