I realized why I'm so excited about Doom3. I love games that scare the begeesus out of me, and i'm sure D3 will. But since that's still a ways off, anyone know of some good scary PC games to play in a dark room in the middle of the night? I've already played Silent hill, silent hill 2, resident evil, resident evil 2 (not PC games, I know, but still)

Isn't there already a topic like this floating around the "other games" forum where this ought to be?
Anyway, the AvP games are nice and scary. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/biggrin.gif

However, this is not the case with TED's fill routine. This slow, stupid algorithm will casually fill one plane of data in a painfully creeping manner. Press ESC when it gets confused." - John Romero on TED (Tile EDitor)

System Shock 2, Doom & Doom 2 on jDoom with PSX music... http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smilies/cwm16.gif They Hunger (mod for Half-Life), The Inverted Manse (mod for Thief II, scariest mod I've ever played), The "Cathedral" levels in Thief I...
Not Wheel of Time, though, not with the Ways...too freaky for me...heck, I can barely play it during the day.
Aliotroph?: The topic you mentioned is about the scariest monsters in gaming, not the scary games themselves, so this one's slightly different.

Well i just got Resident Evil 3 for PC. It doesn't seem to be getting along with windows XP very well. Anyone know where I can get a fix, or patch, if there even is one? I haven't had much luck so far.

Here's the story:
In 2072, two men made an AI to function with the space station they were on, named Citadel Station. This AI was named SHODAN (Scientist Hyper-Optimized Data Access System). This AI saw herself as a godess, with all of the people of earth to do with as she wished. She killed most of the people on the space station and turned the rest into horrible cybernetic nightmares. One of the creators of this ruthless AI put a stop to her before her plans could be executed.
42 years later, a scientist named Dr. Marie Delacroix discovered a way to make a ship travel faster than light. A ship was built to exploit this new technology, named the Von Braun. It began its first journey with the battleship Rickenbacker to guard it. The battleship traveled on the back of the Von Braun so it could travel with the Von Braun. During the journey, the crew of the Von Braun receives a distress call on Tau Ceti V, 65 trillion miles away from Earth. They get there to help whoever is in distress.
Then everything goes terribly wrong.
It's an awesome game. It gives you the willies throughout the entire game. The sound is some of the best I've ever heard. You will absolutely love this game. Money shouldn't be a problem, since it's about 10-15 dollars. You can usually buy it at Best Buy or at some other place.
Hopefully this is a good enough of an explanation to let you know of the backstory.

My friend said that he thinks Doom3 will be so scary that he will shit in his pants...
I think I won't go watch him play it when its released or let him play it with my comp.
Currently the most scariest games are Doom and AvP.

I got scared by DooM last night when I was playing my own map. I forgot a spiderdemon was in the next room, so i ran back out when I saw it and went straight to a secret BFG. Little did I know it was a trap to releport me to a room full of cybs and viles and barrels. I was dead in 2 secs when the barrels went off. I was like "doh how stupid can I be ?" http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/biggrin.gif

I wouldn't have thought you'd have forgotten about that trap Ninja! Lol. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smilies/cwm29.gif I love and hate scary games. I like to be scared but it depends. I wasn't scared in the same way when I had a go of Resident Evil as I was when I've played the Silent Hill games. In RE I was more afraid of running away and being chased whereas in SH I was afraid of the noises, what I couldn't see, the blasted radio and a load of other things. It's hard to explain but I hated to play SH alone because I was always scared to some degree when I played it while with RE I wasn't always so frightened. I don't like HL because the aliens can just appear and surround you, plus the fact that they just freak me out a bit and that they were messing with something that I'd have left well alone.

I think HL is a total Doom clone. Both had something to do about teleporting or such things and then something went wrong and a gateway to another place opened. In HL it was Xen and in Doom it was Hell. But I like both games, but I like Doom more, because it's the "original".

HL2 is full of cliches though and is a clone of everything, with Starship trippers bugs, War of the Worlds tall walkers, etcetera.
Anyway, go play System Shock 2. Or maybe even Blood 1....

Not that game is scary which is filled by ripped bodies, strange sounds in the dark, and sudden monsters from-behind-the-corner, but that game is scary which makes you believe that you really is there, in the game, and all it is real, and you can really die - it has nothing to do with cool graphics or story, but only your wish to believe that this world behind the monitor glass is true, and.. and something in the game itself that allows you to believe.
For me, such game was Robinson's Requiem - the only game I saw that hasn't any "hit points" or "%of health" - only various types of body damage, thirst and hunger... And worse, there were situations when you are still alive, but you know that you'll die soon, and even have minute or so to try and save yourself, desperatedly digging yor first-aid kit in searches of drug, which would prevent the incoming heart attack, and trying to remember what wrong thing did you eat - but you all is useless... THAT was scary http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smilies/cwm25.gif

See, I would class that as frenzied/frantic - like in a CTF match, when you have the enemy flag, are approaching your base flag to capture with hardly any health, and you can see railgun shots springing up on either side of you and you just wish so much that you could move a little faster and you are practically bouncing around in your seat.
Scary for me is a combination of that (usually when something has you cornered) and just fear and dread - like in the D3 alpha where sometimes I would almost not be able to leave a room because I was so scared.

The war of the worlds would make a kick-ass game.. also if anyone has read "the mist" by stephen king (part of the skeleton crew short story collection) that would also make one heluva game

One game that always used to jack me up was the original X-Com. The first time you play it everything's a mystery, and you never knew when one of your soldiers was going to turn a blind corner into a hailstorm of alien plasma. Definitely a classic.
