I just wanted to see if anyone out here has tried Red Faction. I bought the game about a year or so ago, and just finally played it, and I must say, it's not that bad of a game. In the single player, it reminds me somewhat of Half-Life, where as the MP, is just as interesting as the single. Trust me, being able to blow up walls to get to secrets ads a new demention. Though I must say, shooting hand & machine guns, leaves a little more to be desired. The accuracy (even standing still) is always off, and never on target, where the sniper, RPG and rail gun(you can see and shoot through walls) have superb accuracy.

Does anyone else here play it? If so what server do you play on? Better yet, what maps have you designed?

I've only played the SP Red Faction and like you say it's something like a Half-Life on Mars. Anyhow I thought the game was pretty cool.

I have my eye on Red Faction II. I wonder if I should pick it up.........

I think I'm gonna invest some money in Red Faction 2. Though, I did read a review; it said that it was a 7.8 out of 10, and the first was 8.8

I have yet to play Red Faction, though I do have part 2 on my XBOX, and I am not that impressed, I think the story is ok, but could have been told a lot better, as for the characters in the game, they are gay, unless you are the type who is impressed by half the action movie crap that hollywood pumps out every year, then you might think it is pretty "buffed" (if that is the word to apply here). http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smile.gif

The actual game play was so so, I guess I was not too impressed by the level design and shit. Usually when I am playing a FPS, I really get into it, and find inspiration for my own maps, and this one has yet to do that for me. Granted I have yet to sit down and play the 1st one, so perhaps it is a totally different story, who knows? The game mags say 1 is better so...

I do like the idea of blowing up your surroundings though, that is an idea that needs to be expanded upon, Red Faction does a decent job with the concept, but it could be taken a lot further.

Red Faction 2 was okay but it got really boring after a while. The level where you start out in the cemetery is the dumbest level cuz there's an infinite number of zombies. The only thing I liked about the game was the variety of weapons. It's too bad you couldn't drive those buggys around. I wouldn't say it's worth buying. Even with the multiplayer I'd say go play Unreal Tournament or something.

I saw Red Faction II on the shelf for $39. Not bad if it's half decent.

A Second Opinion:

Ok, I have come back and played some more of part 2. I liked the grave sceen, I liked how the zombies looked up close (reminds me of the new soldiers in newdoom), there heads looked awsome, and there walk was PERFECT I would say as a BIG fan of the Night Of The Living Dead Trilogy. My only bitch there is that enemies just kept coming from no where, which took away from the realism of the situaion, though it was fun blasting the hell out of an endless onslaught of enemies. An interesting piece for doom designing inspiration though...
...just needs a little twist. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smile.gif

The plot gets more interesting. Not nearly as kool as the Flood, but good enough I suppose, and thankfully they mellow out on the cheesey macho buff talk from the characters, don't get me wrong, the characters remain ever so cheesy, so cheesy only a fan of the movie: Armageddon or The Fast And The Furious could love them. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smile.gif

Level design definatly improves and makes more consitant use of the GeoMOD engine or what ever it is called (blowing holes in shit). The vehicle driving sceens get kool too, I really liked the under water sceen, slow and mellow, yet there was action, felt like I was under water. But of course, unlike Halo, these sceens took place outside the normal game play, you could not just walk up to a vehicle and get in, rather it was a matter of the stage starts, and your in it. :/

7.5 out of 10, wait till it drops to $25, or just MOD your XBOX and rent and copy. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smile.gif

deformable terrain = good
standard fps with nothing superior in the gaming world = bad

I played Red Faction 1. It was really fun. According to you guys, the sequel seems to be different from the first one. It actually had a great storyline, with pretty well-developed characters. 'Twas fun, it was!

Ya as soon as my GeForce gets here I'll have to load up the old one and give it a go. The story ain't too shabby, I just can't ignore that hint of cheese they have tossed into it.

I've played Red Faction 2 on my friends Xbox, and I must say, it isn't good at all. However, I'm not a huge fan of playing FPS's on consoles. I will see, how it turns out on my computer. I've beaten the first Red Faction, and I still stand behind it. A good story, and it's not very linear compared to most FPS's.

I think a quality that makes an FPS great is the use of vehicles. No wonder why Halo and BF 1942 were so great. I wish you could drive those buggys in Red Faction 2.

I have it on PC and XBOX, have not touched the PC version yet, but I can say on the XBOX you definatly have to play it for a few hours for it to become kool.

As for non-linear...

...um no. Unless you are talking about part 1, which I still have yet to load up. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smile.gif
