If you don't count HeXen and HeXen II, Quake and Quake II, Heretic and Heretic II (all of which are in some way related to DooM) my choices are:
Unreal -- fantastic alien-world adventure with amazing graphics, great interactivity, and wonderful opportunities for exploration.
Half-Life -- atmospheric, (mostly) based in our own world, very interactive
Duke Nukem 3D, Shadow Warrior, Blood -- All games using the Build engine, and all very atmospheric and irreverent.
Dark Forces and Jedi Knight -- Star Wars. Need I say any more?

Funny thing is, is that I used to work at a video game store, and that gave me a lot more exposure to different games(compared to most people). Reason I say this, because I completely forgot a game(series) that I played on the PSX first, then on Nes, then GBA and thus forth. I'll save the suspense of guessing, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. What a great game.

The PSX version sucked in comparison to the Sega Saturn version. On the Sony you could only play 1 character, where on the Saturn you could play the game as 3 or 4 different character's which not only added more alternate endings and what not, but also changed the story line around a bit too!

eh, XDelusion? Are you refering to Castlevania: SOTN? If so, I'm gonna have to find a saturn somewhere and take a look. I played Castlevania so much, I think I beat it with every item/weapon and had something like 201.83% or something like that as my percent finished....not really sure though(I know it was over 200).<-This just added, not to brag, but in fact give you an idea on how much I played it.

There was another port for the Dreamcast, which was in 3D, but looked GOOD unlike the 2 N64 attempts at it. I heard it was going to be a true Castlevania, only in 3D, unfortunatly it got scrapped when Sega announced that it was no longer going to produce the Dreamcast. :/
The pictures I have seen looked awsome though.

Agreed, the Dreamcast was short lived. It's a shame that sony has to "try" and be the best....and they boasted about their variety of games to choose from(psx & ps2). However, the dreamcast has a variety games as well (let me just say backwards compatability[nes, emu]). How's the MODed XboX? Worth while; can you play burnt music cd's?

If only Sega would have added backwards compatability for Saturn before realeasing the DC. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smile.gif
Ya the MODed XBOX is heaven for me, I had one chip that just scrwed down and was easy to install, but it came loose from time to time so I switched over to one that you solder in, and that only took about an hout and a half to put in. I dropped a 120Gb Hard Drive into it and have Linux installed on it as well. I can copy my original games to the Hard Drive for play, so I don't have to risk scratching those $40.00 plus dollar games, and I have a crap load of MAME, NES, SNES, GBA, SMS, Turbo CD, Sega CD, ect ect ect games all piled on there, it is really quite kool, infact we just now got an emu that actually allows you to play off your original Sega CD and Turbo GFX CD games from the DVD drive! http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smile.gif
As for musick, ya you can rip what ever to it, that is so long as you are ripping an original CD, otherwise you have to burn your sound track to a CDRW at 4x since the XBOX DVD does not read normal CDR's for some reason, that is unless you put a better DVD rom in there 1st, but that can be a pain.
Having your sound tracks on the hard drive is really worth the while as there are more and more games coming out that support custom sound track, so if anyone tells you Vice City has the best and largest sound track...
...just wait. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smile.gif
P.S. Duke Nuke'm 3D, and Rise Of The Triad were both recently ported to the XBOX. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smile.gif

The Xbox is an amazing thing with a mod chip in it. You can also use mod codes for DOAX so you can play as the girls naked. And in Halo you can be any character in the game (including dead bodies). So that means you can be an elite and drive the wraiths or you could go around, blasting things as a hunter. I got a question though. I know you can burn soundtracks to the hard drive but can you do it with a CD-RW disc? Because I don't wanna go around and buy tons of cd's with only one song on it I like.

Wouldn't it be easier to just send the music through ethernet. As for mod chips, don't forget to turn them off before going on X-Box live. I know I would unless I put a big sign on the wall behind.
XDelusion
April 25th, 2003, 09:43 PM
Once you upgrade your Hard Drive, you have to have the MOD chip on for the XBOX to work, otherwise you get error codes, so the only way to get around that is to not upgrade your hard drive, or to build an external hard drive case with switcher for your XBOX, and install Live only to the one the XBOX came with.
As for ripping Music off CDRW, yes you can, but just not CDR.
As for why not use Ethernet to transfer, MP3's, well I do that too, but you can not use MP3's in games, also you must use them with a different Media Player than the one the XBOX comes with. If you have a slow PC, or a crappy hard drive, you may not always end up with the best rips, at least the XBOX rips turn out perfect every time.
Fun little investment, hell you don't even need a MOD chip anymore to do all this. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smile.gif

I'd be nice if someone soldered some more memory to the XBox. There's 2 empty spots but I guess you can't run out to the store and get some BGA memory.
Wonder if they found out the BIOS password yet?
Aliotroph?
April 26th, 2003, 02:10 AM
Why would you even put a BIOS password in a console? There's no point. For that matter, why not just sell consoles with MOD chips already in them? That way more people would be interested in them.

Well I have no idea what you change in the BIOS but I guess its to keep the mad overclockers out. As for the mod chips in every console, they make piracy to easy. Put in a big HD in, go rent some games and copy them over. And not to mention you put Linux on it and have a cheap (yet descent) computer.

The topic is changing... http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smile.gif
The only way to get more RAM for it, would be to buy a dead motherboard off Ebay, unsolder the RAM from it, and add it to your working XBOX. Is supposed to work wonders for Mame and Linux, but from what I understand you have to begin patching all of your Commercial games, and I don't know how to do that, and there arn't just patches laying around to use since only a handful of people actually bothered to take this tedious task upon themselves.
Pre-Modded systems = Dreamcast. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smile.gif
BTW, DOOM Legacy plays fine under XBOX Linux in software mode, but the sound gives off this strange echo effect because of the sound drivers needing updated, but actually the effect really makes the game more interesting! Hopefully some day we'll also have hardware acceleration so we can play Legacy in OpenGL under XBOX Linux, and perhaps a few other ports.

All of this is true with the Xbox? Can the hardware support two hard drives at the same time, one running ??? and the other Linux? And how could you use the second for playing completely copied games, shouldn't it be in a block format?
All I want to know is where to get the mod chip, I'll figure out the rest...

I'd take a Gamecube over a PS2 any day man! It is sad to see it doing to bad in the market, though I am glad that the Gameboy Advanced is doing well, that system in bringing back some really awsome games!
As for "getting it", ya I get it, my XBOX is also my NES, SNES, GB, GBC, GBA, 2600, Intellivision, Genesis, 32X, MSX, Sega CD, Turbo GFX 16, Turbo CD, Amiga 500, Amiga 1200, Sega Master System... my fingers are getting sore. Ya, I'd say I understand ALL TO WELL my friend. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smile.gif
Ok, XBOX hacks:
The two hard drive thing, well you can only have the hard drive and the dvdrom hooked up at once, though you can build an external IDE bay with extra hard drives, and make a switch to choose which drive to boot from, but what I did was just toss in a 120GB hard drive, and put Linux on as Hard Drive images, thus I can simply select Linux from the main menu as if it were another game or what not. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smile.gif
MOD chips...
Well there is the Matrix, and the Executer 2, the Matrix is a no solder jobby, but it can be a pain to allign correctly, but once you got it, you are pretty well set....
... unless it comes loose, then you have to take you crap back apart and set it straight again which sux, that is why I just go tthe Xxecuter 2 lite, which only requires you to solder 9 easy to solder points, and 1 semi-hard solder point, but once you get it installed correctly, you are set for good. I never solder and I got it installed in about 2 hours, so it ain't all that bad.
As long as you have the latest X2 bios, you can run ANY commercial game off your hard drive without having to patch the game first.

What system are those metal slug games on? I've never heard of them but I love sidescrollers. Right now my favorite game would have to be Morrowind. I just bought Tribunal. However, at the moment, having resigned myself to being stuck with Enter The Matrix, I'm trying to struggle through its confusing-ass missions.

SavageMessiah: You HAVE to try the MS series. Honestly some of the most fluid and fun platformers ever to be made.
You can't get them for the PC though unfortunately, so I got the roms and an emulator.

So did I. It probably was because everything was silent and you were almost blind. You were running like heck to get to the next waygate so you wouldn't be caught by Machin Shin, and since some bridges were out, you were led astray. Then you heard a slight wind noise, and you knew that if you tarried about, you would meet your doom. Then a giant wall of blackness, even darker than the Ways themselves, came flying toward you, screaming demented sayings that made your hair stand on end. Then you died (or reloaded as soon as you heard the Black Wind coming).
Scary games rock.

Battlezone II was fun, but somewhat buggy. The graphics were good, though, and the mix of action/strategy was executed well.

The well executed RTS/FPS elements were what made the first one so good as well - it can't be an easy task to add RTS style elements to a game where you don't have an overhead view of everything.

I wish I could try the original arcade version of Battlezone. Too bad machines with vector displays usually died a quick death (that would be partially the fault of some sloppy coding over at Atari). I'll just have to stick with my Java version with keys instead of joysticks.

"Once in a while a programmer really writes something he's proud of, a slick, elegant, blazingly fast routine that stands as a benchmark against which other code will be judged by. However, this is not the case with TED's fill routine. This slow, stupid algorithm will casually fill one plane of data in a painfully creeping manner. Press ESC when it gets confused." - John Romero on TED (Tile EDitor)
