Fatal Frame for the PS2 and the Xbox. Both made me cry like a little girl. The sound is great, the game immerses you and I love it. I haven't played it in 4 months because I'm too afraid.

Silent Hill 1 is the scariest game I've played. Those fuckin' alternate worlds scare the shit outta me every time. I wouldn't play that game in the dark.

Fatal Frame hugh, I'll go grab it for my XBOX today then. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smile.gif

As for my all time creapiest game, well it began with DOOM, I used to play the PSX version a lot with all the lights out, with BIG 70's head phones on, sitting in front of my Amiga RGB monitor, I swear I used to jump every time I suddenly heard a demon growl beside me! http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smile.gif

Now of course you were all expecting that one, but what about....

....Alone In The Dark 1.

Without it there would be no Silent Hill, or Resident Evil. And to me it (only part 1) is still the best of them all due to the fact that the story was highly influenced by the Horror master himself, Howard Phillip Lovecraft.

Speaking of Horror masters, anyone ever try Clive Barker's Undying?

Undying is a very cool game. It has loads of atmosphere and I need to actually finish it. Oh and it's not 'short' like some of these newer, high priced games they're putting out today. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/wink.gif

i bought Undying, but couldn't keep it from crashing to the desktop in xp (it's not supported, but all of my other unreal-engine games played flawlessly). what little i did get to play of it was impressive... very atmospheric. the howlers were very adept at scaring the shit outta me everytime they'd fall from the ceiling, and the beasties running around outside the perimeter of the house in the opening were definitely creepy. gave it to a friend who was able to get it to run on his machine (much lower specs, and on xp, to boot-- kinda weird). HE LOVED IT, and he doesn't care for either horror or FPS in general.

btw, the first RE for the PS gave me the willies the first few times i tried playing, until i found a strategy guide in gamepro (first gaming mag i ever bought). yes, i was a late bloomer.

sounds good, I was always a fan of Clive Barker's older stories, sounds like the game ended up living up to the books. I'll have to install it as soon as I get this new computer stablized.

I never read any of his books.....

Theres one part where I had a choice of checking out a foggy cellar in the mansion or not. I could hear noises and growling. I decided to go down there for the hell of it. It was very dark and hard to see. Howlers kept jumping me and I gladly blasted em with my shotgun. Was very atmospheric, hard to explain and very memorable. Gotta love Undying. The howlers are damned cool methinks. You never know when one or two or a swarm of them is gonna come out of the darkness.

You have to watch out with his books because lately he has been writing a bunch of stuff about homosexuality being that he is gay and all, so I am just skipping those and waiting for him to get back to his old stuff. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smile.gif

As for his older works, they are totally fucking awsome! I am sure you have seen Hell Raiser 1 or 2 (the only Hell Raiser's he directed), Night Breed, Lord Of Illusions, Candyman (1 only), and Rawhead Rex (did not direct himself, but VERY close to the original story). If so you will have an idea of how dedicated he is to horror unlike many of those fucks out there in hollywood such as Wes Craven and Stephen King who really need to go get a job a Disney or something with the stuff they come up with any more.

The books themselves are similar but have more fantasy combined into the stories as well. He mixes things together in a really stange fashion, it is hard to explain, but definatly worth checking out. I'd suggest starting out with Weave World which is probably my personal favorite of them all. It has to do with a world woven into a magical rug, in order to hide its occupants (escapees from Eden) from Uriel the angel who gards the garden, and of course from from some evil beings who were from there as well. It has been a while but that is the best I can describe it, sounds like a pure fantasy story, but is really far from it, there is lots of strange and twisted things going on in that one. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smile.gif

Ya, no shit, blame the damn forums. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smile.gif

Barker has always let it known that he was gay, like in The Great And Secret Show, the main character's gimp/servent is sitting across from him in a restaraunt. Anyhow the main character is a man (much like the man in Lord Of Illusions) who is aspiring to be a god, and gets a jump start on the mystics by some strange magic mixed with science which came from some dude tapping into man's primordial substance or some shit like that. Anyhow the demi-god's servent asks him at some point if he would like him to suck his dick again, and I was like," AGHHH MAAAN, NOOOOO" http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smile.gif Fortunatly that was the only gay part in that whole book, but I slowly began to realize that Barker was definatly gay, and was sure once I had read Imagica, as well as a few interviews with him. None the less, he is damn kool for a pole smoker! http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smile.gif

Oh ya, and to make up for the gay shit, I believe the demi-god ends up killing his servent later on because he got on his nerves too much, prolly not unlike people always tugging at Jesus' clothes and shit. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smile.gif

That is an interesting story actually. From what I understand, the company who put that game together said they wanted it based off of Clive Barker's work, so they convinced Barker to meet them, but he only agreed to a half hour meeting. Once Barker got there, and discussions began to roll, he broke the half hour period, and ended up staying at that meeting for 4 hours, and got REALLY excited about the whole project. He said he no longer wanted to be the guy who occasionally gives advice, and rather got really involved, and was there working with the team through out the project! http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smile.gif

There was never a book called Undying, but I am willing to be it is based off of some of his works, not unlike all of his movies.

Hellraiser = The Damnation Game (sort of)

Night Breed = Cabal

Lord Of Illusions = The Last Illusion (short story, prequal to the movie actually), The Great And Secret Show, and another story whos name elludes me right now.

Candyman = Candyman short story

Candyman= The Forbidden (from IN THE FLESH or BOOKS OF BLOOD VOL. 5)

Hellraiser= The Hellbound Heart (a novella, like CABAL). very good and well worth the read if you can find it (i ran across it in some horror anthology, forwarded by ramsey campbell, years and years ago).

btw, he only directed the 1st HELLRAISER (the only good one, IMHO), then NIGHTBREED, et al. and while most of his early stuff was always labeled as "horror," he's always considered his work to be fantasy. go figure.

THE DAMNATION GAME (first full-length novel) is also wonderful, though not quite as epic in scope as WEAVEWORLD.

best short stories: THE YATTERING AND JACK, THE BODY POLITIC (story and author featured in the crappy made-for-tv anthology "Quicksilver Highway" 5 or 6 years ago), DREAD, CONFESSIONS OF A (PORNOGRAPHER'S) SHROUD and the one from Books Of Blood Volume One (or Two-- i can't remember, and i can't find my copies at the moment) about the guy running the marathon, the name of which also escapes me at the moment. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smilies/cwm3.gif

just my $.02.

EDIT: HELL'S EVENT (BOB VOL. 2), and lo and behold, THE HELLBOUND HEART is more readily available than i thought. groovy.

Hellbound Heart came out after the movie, I was saying that Hellraiser was highly inspired from the Damnation game (sort of).

As for Candyman, your right, I forgot it was not called Candyman in the book. Clive Barker was going to do the sequal (I wish he would have), but rather than continue on with Candyman, he was going to make the sequal about Midnight Meat Train! http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smile.gif

I am pretty sure Hell Raiser 2 was also done by Barker, I could have swore that is what Fangoria magazine was saying back when it came out all those years ago. I used to have posters galore from that mag all over my walls when I was in 7th grade. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smile.gif

Quicksilver Highway = suck suck suck, anything king touches sux, well his made for TV crap always does anyhow, I can not believe what he did to the Shining, I was ripping my hair out man!!!

THE YATTERING AND JACK - Ok, you want to see something totally funny. Hunt down Tales From the Dark Side Vol 5 (pretty sure it is 5), they did a version of that on there, which is totally gay, and features one of the dudes who prolly played one of the ewoks in ROTJ. Gay, but a must see. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smile.gif

Ever read from the master Howard Phillip Lovecraft? That was Barker's main inspiration during his Books Of Blood era.

i'm gonna go ahead and apologize up front, cos i'm not trying to be an ass or anything, but believe me-- "Hellraiser" was based on THE HELLBOUND HEART. the novella wasn't released until around the same time as the movie, and didn't appear widely in print until a year or so later. he wrote the story as a basis for a movie he had in mind, then adapted his own story into the screenplay. you're probably thinking of the title for the sequel (HELLBOUND: HELLRAISER II). Tony Randel directed that one; Barker was an executive producer.

i'd completely forgotten that TFTDS had adapted THE YATTERING AND JACK. actually saw it, but don't remeber too many details other than it couldn't have been as good as the short story. according to "Clive Barker's Shadows In Eden" (my backup for what i've forgotten over the years), he actually adapted it himself, and it first aired way back in dec.'86. and there was a graphic novel version of it about ten years ago that also included HELL'S EVENT, IIRC. i have it somewhere, but like most of my stuff i can't seem to find it at the moment.

THE DAMNATION GAME is entirely different, featuring the supernatural card player named Mamoulian (the European), and his servant the Razor-Eater. beyond that, my memory is fuzzy (at best) without re-reading.

fango's coming up on its 25th anniversary you know. first issue i bought new was #27 (20 years ago). my oldest issue is #10 (the infamous "Scanners" cover). good to see a like-minded, twisted counterpart on the forums. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smilies/cwm20.gif

on the subject of ol' master lovecraft, i have to say i found most of what i tried to read a little difficult, though i know he is considered the forebear of most modern horror (forgetting about poe, who was just melancholy and depressed, and oftentimes OH SO BORING). his subject matter was always intriguing, though, even if i couldn't always cope with the prose (unfortunately, i never actually finished anything). what would a lovecraft fan recommend? (i need to get back into books and away from this damn pc, like that'll ever happen...)

i remember a bumper sticker from college that read CTHULHU FOR PRESIDENT... WHY SETTLE FOR THE LESSER EVIL?
now that was funny (or at least i thought so).

btw (and i know it's a somewhat loose-- and modernized-- adaptation), RE-ANIMATOR is probably my alltime favorite gorefest. DAGON is very good, too (another stuart gordon lovecraft film, like RE-ANIMATOR and FROM BEYOND).

i'm gonna shut up now before i get booted for going way off-topic...
