Hey guys, I am new here and of course new to JDOOM and DOOM LEGACY.

These ports kick some serious arse. FreeLook, GL graphics, crosshairs, high resolutions, etc... I never knew Doom could be so great again http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smile.gif

The one thing I was wondering though. Did anyone ever get the idea of giving Duke Nukem 3D the same treatment?

If not, why?

Well, the only reason we have got these ports are, that the doom source code was released in 97. Well, maybe someone would make a duke nukem 3d (maybe more), but 3drealms have not released it. So how could someone make a port for?

You can beg 3drealms for the source code

Ken Silverman (the engine guy for Duke3D) released all the code and tools for the BUILD engine on his site. If someone were to do a port, that would be a good place to start. He did a thorough job of documenting his map formats and all the stuff with the game too. I'm surprised I haven't seen an attempt at a Windows version by now. The game at least could use bugfixes because there were a lot of bugs in it and a lot of things that could use tweaking. It would be a lot of work to duplicate all the parts that weren't released though.

"Once in a while a programmer really writes something he's proud of, a slick, elegant, blazingly fast routine that stands as a benchmark against which other code will be judged by. However, this is not the case with TED's fill routine. This slow, stupid algorithm will casually fill one plane of data in a painfully creeping manner. Press ESC when it gets confused." - John Romero on TED (Tile EDitor)

Maybe ask him ==> http://zdoom.notgod.com

Diggler, I've been wondering the exact same thing for years.

It is a real shame that 3DREALMS have never released the actually Duke 3D code.

It is quite promising to see Rise of the Triads code released. Hopefully 3D Realms may get around to unleashing Dukeys code after DNF is released?

I noticed there's a WIP for a win32/Linux/OS2 port of ROTT... I wonder if it'll ever blow out to the same amazing quality of JDOOM and the such?

I have to suppress the urge to make a joke about that.

Well I think I saw some GL port somewhere, a few months ago, but I as I was not interested, I have forgotten all about it.

Actually, it can supposedly load Build maps (no graphics yet). Just use the -file switch and then the map name. For instance, I grabbed church.map, so I'd load it by going "zdoom -file church.map" and then "map church" in the console to go to the map.

Last time I tried this it crashed (2.0.36), though, so something might have been broken in the newer versions...

I know, we'd probably be waiting till hell freezes over. Though 3D Realms are also giggling over at their site about all the commotion over DNF "supposedly" being dead.

Maybe, just maybe there is still hope?
