I don't have my own forum as I don't need one but I would like some feed back on my Star Trek demo that I have put together. It's a small level (really) but it shold give the feel of what I am trying to do. I have been working on and off on this for about two and a half years now and would like some comments on this be them good or bad. I have already had an email from a friend Chris Hansen from over at the recess. He said I should have some destroyed/broken computer panel textures. This was something that had not even entered my head. Anything like this is also good

Great job, Jason!
I really enjoyed your little labor of love so far, although I wish the textures had been a little more hi-res. I also enjoyed the new sounds. Nice level design as well; I wish there had been more weapons to play around with, but I imagine those are coming, as well as new enemies. Please do keep working on it as much as you can, and I think it's a good idea to keep releasing beta versions, so you can keep tweaking it as you go along.

Thanks.....I am begining to think it was a bad idea though. There is little feedback and what there is has been quite critical. I did rush the demo through and I am now regreting it. I think I might just shelve it. You know when you get to a point with something and then just don't have the drive anymore. Some of you may have seen my website in which case you will already know that I have decided to not finish ST. IF anyone wishes to use anything from the wad then feel free to do what you will. All of it is my own work. Now I am going to concentrate on my two maps for the NDCP. I wonder if I should of mentioned that in the NDCP forum???

Finally had time to play through the Star Trek wad. I have to commend your effort on that. Star Trek is about one of the most impossible things to do in a game like DooM and yet lots of people would love to have it because Star Trek at it's best is really cool (no matter what Mystic says about it).

There's something damn scary about walking into a room and having a bunch of borg walk towards you saying "YOU WILL BE ASSIMILATED!" The sound of their walking was cool too, even if you can hear music with them. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/wink.gif

I also liked the shield effect on the borg. Even the creators of Star Trek seem to have forgotten how that happened the second time the Enterprise crew shot a borg in main engineering.

All that said, I think you should try shifting your focus if you start up that project again. Starfleet ships are cool but it's damn hard to get that look and feel in Legacy for about 10000 reasons mostly to do with the engine limitations. Instead, we should get the dark interior of a Borg Cube. DooM was meant to be dark with blinking lights everywhere, and Legacy's fog and coronas fit the borg idea nicely. Then use Dehacked to make it take something like 100 phaser hits to kill them. Hehehe. Also helps that DooM has so many textures (especially TEKWALL*) that work well like that.

Of course that idea is also pretty damn hard to implement nicely, but it would scare the pants off a lot of players.

I doubt if I will start the whole thing again but thanks for your thoughts. I do have some borg textures that I had put together though.

I had also intended to take the player from the ship/starbase to a borg cube, which would have been the source of the borg invasion and then finally down to the planet which can be seen in the demo.

But getting the textures right was hard work and that had taken a lot of time. I could spend a week on one just to scrap at the end. I would also replace most of the monsters with the borg sprites. That way it would ba harder to kill them as you went along.

I had some great ideas too like using a lamp light (erasing the light itself) and put it under a 3d floor (grid effect) so it would light up from below.

It's just a shame its taken so long, if it hadn't I might have tried again.

I would also like to thank you for your constructive rather than destructive points http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smilies/cwm35.gif

Yeah, textures are a bitch to make. That's why I get DD and Mystic to do it. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/wink.gif

Too bad you never made the Borg cube stuff. That would be fun, and the floor lamp thing is a good idea.

One day I'm going to have to try and build a Borg level (some day after I'm done all my current stuff...).

Oh yeah, your phaser rifle did a great job of showing off that weapon sprite bug in Legacy. I can't believe they haven't bothered to fix that yet. Blegh! http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/biggrin.gif

I have afew Borg textures, I might put together a small level one day....maybe it's all down to having enough time to do eveything. Wads here, Wads there, Wads to be made everywhere. To much to do all the time http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smilies/cwm1.gif

Exactly! So much to do and not enough time to do it in. I'm not sure what you do to make a living but school eats up a pile of time for me. That, and I have a pile of friends who don't give a shit about DooM because they think it's too old or whatever. That means I do DooM stuff on my own time when I'm alone.

I'd be interested to see what kind of Borg textures you have. I've seen some in screens you've posted. They seemed like stuff from Voyager. Personally, I liked the Borg better before the creators of Voyager perverted what they were. They were more scary when they didn't have that stupid Queen who keeps coming back to life and when their ships weren't full of green touch-panel lights. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smile.gif

If you like I will zip up what I have and send them along. If you think you can do something with them thats good and if you wish to tweak them or whatever thats fine also.

That would be cool. I'd love to have a look at those.

One thing that would be nice for Legacy is to have custom lumps to map areas of textures to glow at all times. That way we could have all those computer panels glowing like they should even in dark areas (like the textures in Quake or Duke3D).

I just played your demo FACE and think it's pretty neat and it does have some real star trek atmosphere to it. Too bad your not going to do anymore on the project.

Heh, you found a thread from three years ago! I wonder what happened to Face. He certainly never released a newer version of his Star Trek wad.

The similar threads thing is neat. I bet he found this from the recent star trek wad some fellow released a while ago. I should start similar thread surfing too, and posting stuff when I find interesting topics.
