View Full Version : What would you like to see in the new ZDoomGL?

Ok, figured I'd ask here, too.
Now that I'm almost finished implementing the ZDoom 2.0.x feature set (mirrors are 95% done and skyboxes are the last thing on my list), I can finally look at moving on to the fancy features.
So, my question to you is, what would you like to see in ZDoomGL?
Here's a brief list of features that I plan on implementing so far:
- md2 models are next on my list, and I'm going to look at supporting the JDoom models, too
- dynamic lights are after that, with support for placeable lights in maps to make it easier on mappers to play around with the lights (example of technique I plan on using: http://nate.scuzzy.net/programming/dlight/dlight.zip)
- environment mapping on textures
Any other suggestions? Comments on the work done so far? I'm always open to suggestions!

Sky boxes :P

sky boxes are already in Zdoom....
it would be nice if Zdoomgl can have really realistic fogs and smoke from the guns...

I have as of yet to try ZDoomGL.

It might be nice to have another port support Vavoom's glvis. And texture compression would be useful for the hi rez textures.

Actually, texture compression is already supported if your video card supports it. Just set gl_texture_format to GL_S3TC... The normal textures look like crap when compressed, though (the compression artifacts aren't so noticable on high-res textures) http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smile.gif

Strife support!! http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smile.gif
Actually, I have only used ZDOOM GL a couple of times, and the same goes for ZDOOM itself, while very flexable, I did not like the way things looked, for some reason, things just look more present with Legacy under Gl than the did with ZDOOM. I am not shure how else to describe it...
...the enemies looked skinny...
...something.

Tell me, is ZDoomGL more stable then ZDoom (which crashes every 10 min or so)?

I never had any problems with both. I didn't see that there Tim Tim. How about removing the option for 4 bit screen modes and adding 32 bit. 8 bit textures might be useful. Be sure it can be turned off, Edge doesn't and it annoying.

XDelusion: it could be that ZDoomGL is the only GL port I know of that forces an aspect ratio of 1.6 to match the original software renderer, so it makes everything look taller (more like the software renderer).

Hehheh, you can set a 32 bit screenmode with the gl_vid_bitdepth cvar. Default is 16. Just set it to 32 and then type "vid_restart" and you should be in 32bit mode.
Yeah, I plan on adding paletted texture support, but I haven't gotten around to it yet http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/wink.gif

Well, could you possibly try and find ways to make it a little les.. laggy? It lags on my machine, and I've got a 1.5ghz P4, with a GeForce 4 Ti 4200 card, and it sometimes lags even at 16-bit 640x480

I will be content with ZDoomGL when it has all the capabilities of ZDoom and the look of Legacy (with md2 models, of course).

Heh, well it still has the 35fps cap that ZDoom has, so that's one thing. I'm currently working on a more efficient geometry path so that should help on the more complex maps.

Another suggestion: Add the smooth camera movement ability that JDoom has.

Got it installed and finally got it set up so everything is looking good. So far I like it. Haven't seen anything to complain about yet. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/biggrin.gif
A launcher of some sort would be nice.

Zdoom or ZdoomGl don't work on my computer any more. The screen goes blank on starting either of them up and the computer locks up until I restart.
I'm on a GF3 with the excellently fast new 41.09 drivers... has anyone else had this problem?

btw, what is "environment mapping on textures"?
Deathgiver
February 16th, 2003, 03:27 PM
Wouldn't that be for "shininess"
ToXiCFLUFF
February 16th, 2003, 04:29 PM
Yeah, that's the one. Kinda random shine suggesting reflectiveness.
Can't really see it fitting into Doom to well though. Not that I'll ever find out until Zdoom works.

I think environment mapping would work pretty well in Doom. For the end user I'd support an ini file so they can specify which textures/flats should be environment mapped and for the mappers I'd let them specify which lines/sectors should get it (and provide a way for them to turn off user-specified definitions).
Then you could get effects like a shiny overlay over windows or mirrors, etc.

Add compatibility for all of Legacy's editing features including FraggleScript and kill all of Legacy's little bugs. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/tongue.gif
DO NOT EVER ADD THOSE GAY-LOOKING LENS FLARES! http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/wink.gif
And lastly, add a secret key to change the HUD face to Winona Ryder cause she's just prettier than the DooM guy. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/biggrin.gif
