View Full Version : Does anyone know of some good texturing tutorials?

Because I know it can be really quick and easy to whip up a fairly decent trim texture, or even a wall in Photoshop (a friend showed me once) but I've just forgotten it all. All I need is a fairly simple gun-metallish trim texture.

Ah, I've kind of figured it out anyway, which is good because I just couldn't find the right shade of trim texture in all the texture packs I had.
My first two textures (well the second is just the first really): http://www.geocities.com/toxic_fluff/RUST/bztrim.html
Any pointers/tutorial links would still be much appreciated.

Looks cool. I usually just go for it and use several programs.

I wish I knew how to make textures. I always have to ask DD for custom ones.

"Once in a while a programmer really writes something he's proud of, a slick, elegant, blazingly fast routine that stands as a benchmark against which other code will be judged by. However, this is not the case with TED's fill routine. This slow, stupid algorithm will casually fill one plane of data in a painfully creeping manner. Press ESC when it gets confused." - John Romero on TED (Tile EDitor)

You got any pointers DD? Where can I see some of your work, seeing that vilecore just won't download for me? In fact, nothing off your site does.... goddamn Fourwinds.

Vilecore has no custom stuff in it but the Upgrade will have lots. My Lavapitt Temple has custom textures.
If you can't download Lavapitt, I can email it.

Anyhow I mostly use Photostudio, PSP7 and Wally for making textures. Photostudio does all the cutting, pasting, masking, cropping and cloning. PSP7 I mainly use to add effects and for applying the doom palette. Wally is excellent for making sure your textures tile perfectly and is good for adding rivets bullet holes and cracks.
You can get Wally here if you don't have it already.

Making textures from scratch can be a pain sometimes and I think if you have Photo Shop then there used to be lots of tutorials on making textures with it. You can use Wally as well and I think it has some ok tuts (haven't looked at em in ages). Besides the 'from scratch' dealie, I've made textures from digital pics I took with my camera. I made a cool oak flat and wall tex from a piece of real oak using my digital camera. You can make textures fast that way. Take pic of a concrete wall up close.... crop a piece out of pic.... experiment with some effects in PSP, apply the palette and Viola a new texture. Of course sometimes it'll look like shit and sometimes it'll surprise you with how cool it looks. Once you have the base tex made and it looks good in the game then you can do a few variations.... maybe a border or some cracks with wally. You can also scan a drawing or old photo and crop the interesting parts.

Nice map DD. The custom textures give it a different atmosphere. Good for a splitscreen deathmatch too http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/biggrin.gif
