Very nice. When will be released?
Exl
December 11th, 2002, 11:34 AM
If all goes well, the first functional version will be released somewhere at the end of this weekend. But don't put your finger on it just yet.
What still needs to be done is:
- Adding a frame browser (not editor)
- Adding loading\saving of dehacked files
- Adding configuration stuff (.ini-files, so don't worry)

Hehe, love the "Accept" buttons. That's refreshing after every other program in the world uses "OK". Of course the OK buttons are some sort of standard now and you're even supposed to always have them on the left. Bah! Like it matters! http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/biggrin.gif

You need VB runtimes, you can get them from Microsoft's site.
I don't think a frame duration can go over 255 (I could be wrong). So you might want to add limits to what the user can enter.
Idiot proofing in VB kind of sucks.

I always thought it was just one byte. Anyway, the code pointers section isn't right. The code pointers aren't entered as those big long numbers but a frame number (i.e. 127). Probably wouldn't make a difference with just saving a deh file, but for patching the exe, it might.

What I'm saying is you have a number like 162160 listed in the code pointer value. When you change the code pointers in Dehacked you enter frame numbers like 127. Dehacked then displays 166096. But in the deh file it's 127. I'm not sure if 166096 is important when you patch the exe, but if it is then you'll run into some problems.

If I'm not mistaken, the .deh file format has still support to give the code pointer directly through the Action pointer property. So all I'll have to do is add a combobox with all the possible code pointer descriptions in them. I THINK....

Ah, the deh saving\loading code. It's the most messy piece I've ever written. It first saves every entry header (thing name, like "Thing 1 (Player)") , whilst making sure it doesn't save unnecessary parameters (like Width = 65536). Then it does a second pass to remove all the 'nulled' entries. Ugly http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smilies/cwm3.gif

Wierd, I know. I loaded it a Second time and it worked fine :P
It looks Pretty Kool but I can think of about one Problem with the Setup (Depending on what you want to do). The Things Data file isn't very user friendly to try and edit. My Whole approach is Based on Having User Definable Things, Frames, and Other things. It is good for Source Ports and Things like that. Basically, I load all of my Data from a Set of Comma Delimited Text files Grouped by Type of Data. There is an Option to load a Custom Data-File Set. The whole process Works well, and Provides for Updates and User Controll.

Micro$oft Bob! Now there was complete marketing failure. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/biggrin.gif
Why is VB great? Simple, it's that "Dim" statement for declaring variables. Leads to all kinds of fun:
<BLOCKQUOTE><font size="1" face="Trebuchet MS, Arial, Helvetica, serif">code:</font><hr width="100%" size="1" noshade><pre>
Dim Sum As Integer
Dim Wit As Single
Dim glow As AmbientLight
</pre><hr width="100%" size="1" noshade></BLOCKQUOTE>
http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/tongue.gif
EDIT: Error handling can be fun too. Sometimes it's really simple:
<BLOCKQUOTE><font size="1" face="Trebuchet MS, Arial, Helvetica, serif">code:</font><hr width="100%" size="1" noshade><pre>On Error Resume Next</pre><hr width="100%" size="1" noshade></BLOCKQUOTE>
And sometimes you can be mean:
<BLOCKQUOTE><font size="1" face="Trebuchet MS, Arial, Helvetica, serif">code:</font><hr width="100%" size="1" noshade><pre>
Private Sub getValue()
On Error Goto WRONG_TYPE:
value1 = txtEntry1.Text
Exit Sub
WRONG_TYPE:
Dim result as vbMsgBoxResult
result = MsgBox("What, you can't type a fucking number?!?! Just for that you can have all your work reset!", vbExlamation + vbOkOnly, "You Suck!")
resetWork
End Sub
</pre><hr width="100%" size="1" noshade></BLOCKQUOTE>

I found a funny little bug. Well actually it's not funn since it crashes the program:
Go into the frame editor. Select frame number 1 and open the editing dialog for it. Click the little button next to "Sprite" and watch it crash with runtime error 380: invalid property value. This doesn't happen for the other frames, just that one.

You know, while you're up to your elbows in dehacked editor code you might want to send mail to ports that use dehacked and see if they have any features planned or perhaps even see if they want to extend what dehacked can do.

Suppose I'll post here instead of just E-mailing you all the time.
Ok, the program is awsome, I no longer have to fill up an entire screen just to use DeHackED, which is a nice touch! I also love the menu system, which is much prefered to the shoort cut key system that Deh has, also using a mouse, is much prefered over the arrow keys. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smile.gif
Of course writing anything in Visual Basic is a moral sin, but hey, at least it ain't DOS. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smile.gif Another good feature is that you can at least run this in VMWare under Linux, though I have not tested it under wine or winex yet.
As for the little windows that open inside the program, they still need the option to be maximized, so I don't have to scroll down to push the buttons on the bottom.
Also if I load up a Deh file created in DeHackED, it won't ive me the options to choose THINGS, to edit in the list.
Very greatful for the program, makes life much easier over all, glad to see someone finally took the time to write something like this, it is LONG over due!
P.S. Another interesting feature for later on down the road would be to have it where you could have bubble help windows that show what each feature does, I.E. If you highlight the Partital Transparency option with your mouse, it would explain how that makes things partially see though ect.

That's odd, VB programs never seem to function any differently in XP.

That's because I forgot to add the code for them. Must've been that drink I was having... http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smile.gif
BTW, would it be a good idea to release the source code of the proggy? I need some help with some small things. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smilies/cwm36.gif

SourceForge? For Visual Basic? I doubt it. It's not as if it can be added to a CVS or something.

VB has it's own built-in version control gizmos but I have no idea how it all works.
Just grab a free web account somewhere to host that stuff. It won't take much and only a few of us will ever look at the code anyway.

Yes, I'll release the code, but I have alot of stuff to fix (read: made to actually work) before I do that.

Use a GPL for the Source code. I would suggest the GNU GPL (http://www.gnu.org). It makes sure that noone can ever steal your work and claim it as their own.
