I'm making a simple deathmatch level, simple because it has to be within 1200 sidedefs. Damn that shareware version of DeePsea.

The point is, sometimes when I'm testing it, the CyberDemons in the middle sometimes disappear for no apparent reason. If you run around em a couple of times, you shall see what I mean. It's a Legacy wad.

Try packing the sidedefs and sectors to help get around the shareware limitation. Its near the bottom of the file menu. Just make a backup before doing so as it makes the level is hard to edit.

Wicked. That worked, not against the CyberDemon problem, but yeah, no sidedef limitation will ever be a pain in the arse again.

Doesn't help the fact that you can only have 800 linedefs.

"Once in a while a programmer really writes something he's proud of, a slick, elegant, blazingly fast routine that stands as a benchmark against which other code will be judged by. However, this is not the case with TED's fill routine. This slow, stupid algorithm will casually fill one plane of data in a painfully creeping manner. Press ESC when it gets confused." - John Romero on TED (Tile EDitor)

If you build large, complex maps with many sectors that have different attributes (floor & ceiling heights and flats, lighting) the program will not be able to pack them enough to be within the shareware limits. If you're serious about editing, go ahead and pay the twenty-some bucks to upgrade to the registered version (a brand-new version is around $40). It'll be worth the money. Or else find a free program without DeepSea's shareware limits.

Actually, if its $40 in US money, that makes it $80 in Australian money, not something that a 16 year old throws around lightly.

Well it is, but that's not the point.

Hey, does anyone have any suggestions about that CyberDemon problem I was whinging about earlier?

If the price tag is an objection but you want to build large maps in MS Windows, then XWE (http://www.doomworld.com/xwe) may be your answer. It's 100% free and has practically all the features you'll need as a mapper. The down-side is that it lacks documentation, so you'll want to use it if you are an experienced mapper who is familiar with Windows-based editors.

You can pack and unpack. So pack the level and save. Then the next day, come back unpack before you edit any more.

Sort of a PIA, but it works so as long as you stay under the 800 linedef limit and lets you go a lot higher for the sidedefs.

Packing works at remarkably high efficiency, even for the most complex levels. Surprised me too. For example, the new 3057demo level goes from 14,049 sidedefs to 5095 sidedefs.

Good thing this came up. Looks like I need to fix something when I changed to support fo huge levels - some levels that should pack do nothing http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smile.gif [fixed will post in a bit]

Haha, I managed to bring the sidedef count down from 1,200 sidedefs to about 270.
I can now make the level slightly larger, maybe make a little village... expand on the towers... a little imaginative teleportation... and hopefully turn the SpiderDemon into some form of APC and have it roam around the place, even though that has nothing to do with the sidedef count.
