LOL, I've got maps dating back to '96. I was just going through them to pick one to make my community wad out of so I played them all. Good GOD some of them are just HORRIBLE! Just unbelievably bad. I was going through them thinking "I thought that was a good idea? I musta been sniffing glue or magic markers or something..."
Heh, thankfully I've gotten atleast a little better in all this time.

I remember my first attempt at a serious (or so I thought) level. It was a bunch of connected rooms that basically amounted to a test map. It was sad and had some weird sidedef errors for quite a while. Some of the ideas I had are still applied to the map I'm making, although in a much more refined sense.

i made 1 and only 1 room o the map with the Stat location and a cyberdemon.
The sector was to small... so i lost the match against the cybie...
then now, i'm making the biggest mod never done for Doom !!!! since almost 5 years of work too.

All my first maps are gone, never to be found. Lost them in a hard drive failure.
My first "working" map wasn't that bad, except the monsters everywhere syndrome. But I only gave that map to a friend, which I'm sure has deleted it since then.

I've done a whole load of beginner maps and 2 working ones which were going into the community project. Now only one's going cos the first one won't ever see the light of day. It was soooooo bad. The second is according to sparky and epsi, really good.

I got my start with that tutorial... it'd do well to have a revision of that for use with more modern editors so we don't see some of the released schlock we see so much with new mappers. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/wink.gif
[EDIT: We all have schlock maps, it's whether we release 'em that counts...]

I think mappers learn quickly these days compared to the old. It took me a good while before I made a working map in DEU (I used it in the peroid where I didn't have Doom II). But it seems like someone who started more recently can grasp it quicker. Is it the editors? The fact that they're coming from editing games like Quake? Or better tutorials?

All the above I guess, theres a lot of great mappers around and there seems to be more ideas shared across the board.
Funny though I used to play a lot of wads from the archives for a quick fix and thought afterwards "hey thats not bad" , but sure enough when you start mapping yourself you tend to look twice and realise a fair percentage have flaws, e.g. I`ve played so many wads with massive bland arenas or office scenerios filled with anything and everything and never thought twice http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smile.gif
I guess when you get hooked into editing you tend to look in a different light, any of you guys feel the same?
