I'm right now wanting to start editing and wanted to know what would be a pretty good editor tool set for a beginner like me.

It kind of depends on what you like\dislike.
If you've never edited a map before, you may want to start off with some simpler editors (like Wadauthor). Also, if you're running Windows XP or any other non-DOS supporting OS, your choices will be more limited. Here's a short list with some pro's and con's I've encountered:

DEU: DOS, old, buggy, bad
WinDEU: Win98, old, buggy
DETH: DOS, DEU-based (not bad though)
ZETH: Like DETH, but ZDoom specific
Deepsea: Win (probably XP too), many possibilities, powerful, but a little overwhelming to the newbies in editing
WadAuthor: Win, overall pretty nice, messes a few things up sometimes

Okay, that's a long post... http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smile.gif Anyone else got something to add\correct to this?

Hm... let me put it this way, I use WinDEU 99% of the time, and I always treat it right, but to a newbie in map editing... http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smile.gif

I've never used a version of WinDEU that didn't crash all the time. /me hugs DeePsea executable http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/wink.gif

There's also DoomCAD. Doom_Dude and Boingo like it. It's for windows.

I tried another windows one called DoomEd. I don't recommend it though. It's weird and I had issues figuring it out despite being a complete computer addict.

Wadauthor is a good editor but I don't like it's style of doing things (just a preference thing basically). I use DeePsea mostly because it can edit in a style I like and it runs on all versions of Windows (well maybe not 3.1).

Pate also made one called "Why" but I don't think it's really a newbie editor since it's still under construction.

I would use doomcad but I heard it only runs on DOS. So I guess that's it. But I can't understand any editor really.

If DoomCad was DOS I wouldn't ever use it.

Try DoomCad Ninja and follow the tutorial that comes with it. It's worth a try.

Who the hell said it only runs on DOS??? It's the opposite. It only runs on Windows. It was written in Visual Basic.

Everytime I try to use doomcad I get the error message "can't find knife.VBX" The files are in the same directory so what's going on? http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smilies/cwm19.gif I have XP BTW.
I tried doomed too Aliotroph? but all I can get is little squares to appear and Ican't figure it out. So I won't recomend it either especially for newbies.

Hello, i am new here... =D i have also just tried DoomCAD with WinXP and it says the vbrun300.dll file is missing, i copied it from somewhere else in the DoomCAD directory, and now it says something isnt decompressed right, maybe its the wrong version of the dll... where can i get the right .dll???

Doom_Dude
November 16th, 2002, 05:25 AM
Ok Vbrun300.dll doesn't go in your Doom directory. It's supposed to be in your windows/system directory (I'm not sure about XP but for Win95 and 98 this is where the file goes) DoomCad was designed for win95 afterall.

Download vbrun300.dll here (http://www.xmission.com/~psneeley/Shareware/VB300.htm)

Oh and the 'download' link on the page is mispelled 'vrrun' but it IS vbrun...

knife.vbx is supposed to be in the Dmcad folder. I don't know why it's giving you that error. I never had that prob before but I'm using win98...

I have downloaded WadAuthor and its running pretty good =D but how can i add the XGs thingies from JDoom to it???

Aliotroph?
November 19th, 2002, 02:42 PM
No clue about those XG things since I've never used them but Wadauthor has a config file that can be customized for lindef types and such.

As for vbrun300.dll, it just seems stupid that M$ doesn't include runtime libraries for their own programming environments in all Windows versions. I mean the VB runtime libraries just have to be more important than those retarded sounds and movie clips right?

Back in the day I loved Edmap. Might checkout the newer editors and see if I wanna mess around.

DooMCAD has been my editing workhorse since I first started editing. It has a number of limitations, like having 8 x 8 as its smallest grid snap, but it works quite well.

Both DooM Dude and I have made modifications to the DooMCAD .ini files that allow you to edit for Legacy, and BOOM. My version of the DooMCAD .ini files can be found HERE (http://www.geocities.com/boingo_the_clown/DooMCAD.html).

A big problem I am having now is the fact that my new computer is running under Windoze X-tra cra-P, and DooMCAD will not run in it, forcing me to switch back to my old computer, running Windoze 95, in order to do my editing.

By the way, if you go to the Epidermis Emporium (link in my sig), you can download a copy of vbrun300.dll from the tools section.

An odd thing about me and editing seems to be the fact that I do a fair bit of editing for fun, but most of what I do is experimental stuff (FX mostly), and I tend not to release mcuh. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/frown.gif

I updated my 'Stuph' page on my web site today and you can get DoomCAD5.1 and 6.1 off there plus grab the .ini files I edited and the ones Boingo changed for DoomCad6.1. Oh and the vbrun300.dll is on there too. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smilies/cwm35.gif
