Could anyone make me a sound that says something like; "Welcome to the U.A.C. Research Installation" ? Or at least give me an idea on how to make it myself? Thanks.

How did you want it? What's the situation? I might be able to whip something up.

I was thinking that this voice (female or whatever) would be like "Welcome to the U.A.C. Research Installation" or whatever when you enter a specific area in the level. It would be like whenever you watch those movies and suddenly someone walks into an area and a computer generated voice says something like welcome here or welcome there just to seem sophisticated. You know what I mean? I don't know. If you could do that Rellik, that would be great of you.

Thank you for your time,
Black

It's a catch 22, either I make the sound and it's reall bad and I look like a lamer, or it's really good and people think I'm a poof. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smile.gif I'll give 'er a try, dunno when I'll get it done though....

I would use a speech synthesizer and make it a computer voice. Big telecom companies like Bell Labs and AT&T have sites with free ones on the net. Creative Labs has also done text readers and so has M$. M$ has a speech drive out there that has all kinds of voices and many of them are really good too. The Bell and AT&T ones sound earily human...

Here're my attempts. They are each over 100k but are uncompressed .wav that should be ready for a normal Doom .wad. It's basically me, spiffed up in Goldwave to sound robotic and with a lower pitch. (I don't sound like a woman, sorry.)

How can you import new sounds in Doom?
How can one make for example that a certain sound comes, with beginning of the level? Or with enter a second gate?

If you want to set up some "quasi event sound" without getting into scripting or anything like that, just replace the sound of say a turbo door opening (then have it stay open so the lowering sound won't play) with your welcome.wav and put a one time open turbo door close by but out of sight. Then set up a walk over trigger line at the entrance of the room to activate it. The only drawback to this is you won't be able to use turbo doors elsewhere in your level without the "welcome sound". No biggie. Just use normal doors :) There are several programs out there that you can use to place new sounds in your wad. Deepsea, Wintex ect. You'll have to read the docs to find out how to do this. I don't recall the exact method offhand.

Hey, that wasn't that bad. I downloaded both or your files Zack and I have to admit, they were better than what I was expecting. If that is OK with you I'd like to use the first one. I'd give you full credit for it obviously. Thanks.

I haven't been on here for quite some time because I've just been falling apart 'matter of factly'. So I am sorry that I didn't respond earlier to you Rellik. When looking at your original post date I am a bit saddened that I did not respond because usually I like to thank people that have even a small motivation to help me. Oh well. Such is life.

Hey, thanks Black_Icon. I'm glad you like the sounds. You're somewhat lucky because today all my drivers got screwed up and I have no sound at all. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/tongue.gif

Hey Stphrz, that's a cool idea. I used that kind of thing before but I'm not sure I ever used the fast-door sound. There was an old wad included with the Maximum levels called YakWorld, that replaced "barexp" with a 15 or 20 second welcome, as if over a loudspeaker. Strangely, the author threw in an Arch-Vile for the sound and every time you got hit the welcome would play--and it usually wouldn't play for long before the game cut it off, with all the action going on in that section. Later on, the Cyberdemon's "dscybsit" was replaced with a similar welcome. That one's a good idea because it plays at a constant volume on your speakers--but once the Cyb gets hurt and screams it will come to a stop.

Nice sounds Zack, what'd you use to make 'em? Anyone know of any other cool software available?

I used a headset microphone, and GoldWave. It's a great sound editing utility. And the shareware version does not limit the features at all.
