First of all... Is it possible to create fog in Doom II (ZDoom) ?

Secondly... Since no one really cares (or so it seems because no one gives me ideas) I am going to probably ask questions from time to time to see what you people think. I would appreciate it if you honestly responded to these stupid questions...

Do you want the game to be dark with a more distinct 'evil' atmosphere to it or a more classic like Doom game in the gameplay sense?

Thanks...

Define what you mean, are you talking about graphics/sound or level design? If you are talking about graphics/sound I like seeing new textures, it makes things more interesting. as far as level design, my personal preference is Episode 1 style, altho dont ask me why, but the level i am working on now is more of a episode 2 flavor.

I had good results with using white fademaps for foggy sectors. Check out my Crouching Demon, Hidden Mancubus level for some foggy goodness.

Download here. (http://www.teamdeim.com/rellik/download/cdhm.zip)

For info on how to make and use colormaps, check out my editing site:

Episode 1 gameplay and level design are good, but it should still be darker with more scary lighting. Many areas in DooM were too bland with the lighting. Even without ports, better stuff would often have been possible.

Things like fog would be really cool in those levels too.

Lighting can almost always be better. I've seen few maps with perfect lighting. Too bad Doom doesn't have a light_environment. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smilies/cwm43.gif

So how do you create the fog? Your website just came up as a bunch of text-like stuff and I couldn't do anything. I don't know... Maybe I am just screwed up.

Also how did you do the red area? How did you actually make the sector that I walked in appear red? I don't know a whole lot so all I ever seem to have is questions.

I am also becoming very annoyed. I like to use Wadauthor simply because (in my opinion) it is the most user-friendly. But it can't do practically anything another then create standard maps. I can't edit with Boom totally or anything. What should I do? I'm getting quite sick of all these things. I have so many ideas, but all my time is wasted on asking people about how to do this, and how to do that. Then most the time I have to ask them a few times because the must assume I know exactly what they're talking about or something so yeah, whatever.

I have ideas, and the heart, but I can't stand to go in circles... So help me please... Hell I'm still waiting for someone to tell me how to import music into ZDoom.

People say, "You can import .WAV files into ZDoom you know."

I say, "Wow! That's just what I needed. How do you do it?"

A week later... No response.

Deepteam probably knows, but he seems to have disappeared somewhere. There aren't too many people who edit for ZDoom as far as I can tell though. X-Doom (he has a forum here too) should know. The link to his forum has a link to his homepage right under it. That should have his contact information so you can ask him. He's got a huge ZDoom project going.

If you're just replacing DOOM sounds with new sounds, go into Wintex, open up the original DOOM.wad and copy all the sounds you want into a different wad file. Right now their just all the old sounds so if you played it nothing would change. Now click on the sound you want to change, go to EDIT and LOAD File, then select the .wav sound you want to be in the entry. Ta da! You're done.

I'll try to explain the colormaps stuff later, gotta go.

Hey, making killer levels and TCs doesn't happen over night. Most authors have to make several attempts before they come up with something good when they start out. Sorry I can't help you more, but I haven't kept up with Doom day by day.

Mp3 files... Why?

DarkWolf
February 23rd, 2002, 06:13 AM
I don't think you can replace MUS entries with anything but MUS & MIDI (in some ports). The last time I used a port with Mp3 support you had to make a playlist lump in the wad file. I'm not 100% sure on this.

*EDIT*
Okay, you can replace original entries with MOD files. But I haven't had any luck with mp3, sorry I can't be of more help.

How would you do that? I'm using ZDoom. Here are some other points I'd like to ask/stress as well. Please help me. I've tried a variety of things and have gotten nowhere.

OK... The music thing did not work. I get an error that says; “An Error Occurred: Entry c180: Could not write
memory.”

How do I fix this? I am using Wintex and I am importing .WAV files. Please explain in a STEP BY STEP fashion.

Also how do I the SKY1 texture from Ultimate Doom and make it my SKY1 texture in a Doom2 game? How do
you do that? I’m using ZDoom so please explain.

Okay, copy the SKY1 entry from the Ultimate Doom wad to a wad file. Then go into that wad file and rename the SKY1 lump RSKY1. Same goes for the other sky textures.

Since you're using ZDoom you might want to check out the MAPINFO lump (http://zdoom.notgod.com/reference/mapinfo.html) features.

OK... You will have to explain it in a step by step motion. It never works. Basically I want to have all of the textures from Ultimate Doom and Doom II in a texture list TOGETHER so I can use all of them. I want the SKY1 and SKY3 from Ultimate Doom and SKY3 from Doom II in my wad game. I don't understand all the "Copy it to a wad" or any of the lump file stuff. Please explain.

Okay. Open NWT. If you don't have NWT, download it. If it asks you setup questions when the program first starts, just hit Enter (you can change these later). You should see the Doom2.wad listed on your screen, if not press Alt+L and type in Doom2 and press Enter.

Now type on your keyboard rsky1. This should take you to Doom 2's sky graphics. Press space until all three are highlighted. Now press F4 and type in a name for your wad (with the .wad extension) and press Enter.

Now press Alt+L, type in Doom and press Enter. Type in sky1 and copy the sky textures like you did with Doom 2's. Sky1 is separated from Sky2-Sky4 so after you select Sky1, press Backspace once and type 2. You should find the rest of the sky textures. BTW the sky textures used for the F_SKY1 ceiling texture do not need to be entered into TEXTURE1.

Do you understand now? If not, PLEASE go read a tutorial!

What the hell is NWT? I am using Wintex. How the hell do I merge Doom I Textures and Doom II textures together so I could use them in Wadauthor? And how the hell do you convert the Doom2.wad into that zdiwhack.wad for use in ZDoom?

I have gotten the sky to work by simply copying it and renaming it. However that won't work for any of the other textures for some reason. AND how the hell do you get the stupid .WAV files to play under my Wad game when I'm using ZDoom??????

Dude, you gotta calm down. You don't learn this stuff over night. Now if you're trying to put that .wav in as a music file it WONT WORK. Only .mod .mid or .mus files. Period.

Now as for putting all the textures from Ultimate DOOM into DOOM2, that's a fair bit of copy and pasting. Why not just make DOOM1 or DOOM2 wads? Are you sure it'll be worth all that work? If you're just getting into editing, slow down. You're going to get pissed off and burn out. Start small, plain levels no new textures, sounds, etc. Starting out with a huge project is just going to break your back.

Doom Legacy Wads (http://www.newdoom.com/hosted/dlw/) already has Ultimate Doom and Final Doom texture wads that can be used in conjunction with Doom II. They're under the utilities section.
