OK... Since I seemingly have never stopped having problems since I began posting messages in here, I hopefully will only have to write one more. Here are my problems. If you need to know any more information in order to help me please write back or email me.

1) In my level I have a huge glitch like thing that will not go away. I deleted the entire room and it is still there.

2) For some reason Boom will not fix the save game buffer overrun error.

3) None of my pain elementals shoot lost souls. Even if I delete them and put new ones in they still won't.

4) I still cannot get ZDoom to work with my Doom Collector's edition launcher.

I think that is about it. Also, keep in mind I am somewhat of a newbie especially to other source ports and stuff. So you may need to explain things you'd otherwise take for granted. Thanks.

1) Hmmm, email me the level and I'll take a look.

2) I reccommend using almost anything but BOOM (Legacy comes to mind)<GRIN>. To be honest I don't like BOOM just because it's so plain. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/tongue.gif

3) Did you try some scripting or dehacked stuff? If so send it with the level.

4) Try using some of the other launchers that are available. The reason I love editing levels in Legacy is the launcher is just so handy. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smile.gif

There is absolutely nothing wrong with the level. I fixed the few problems it had last week.

The problem is 100% that he didn't realize that just installing a port doesn't mean it will run from the DOOM95 launcher. IOW, he thought that just installing a port somehow would automatically run it even if he still ran DOOM95.

Too bad if he deleted all that stuff when I explained several different times what to do and why he was getting the errors.

Oh well.

It's surprising how many people confuse those launchers and the nature of source ports. People always run PWADs as IWADs in Legacy's launcher (including many of my friends).

Actually the source ports would not fix all my problems. I got Boom to work fine. My problems range from that glitch which I had BEFORE I even tried to configure ZDoom. As well as the save game buffer error. Plus, when Boom plays it none of my freaking Pain Elementals shoot lost souls. So bah...

Thanks for you help ! http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smilies/cwm23.gif

There is no glitch in ZDOOM in that area where you have too many visible planes (nor in BOOM), but there is in stock DOOM/DOOM95. Already explained the problem.

Don't know why you got upset - I tried to explain it all to you. There's learning involved as there is in anything new. And you have to do exactly as what's explained and not do something else instead.

Savegame works fine. Pain Elementals didn't check. Could be one of those limits in DOOM that were left as is. If it is a problem, just reduce the count. IOW, there are certain things that work they way they do because that's the way the engine was designed. I just don't know if it was changed as a lot of limitations were in various ports.

Sounds like you never did get ZDOOM to work.

I remember when I first started making levels, the first few wouldn't work so I trashed them. Later I realized why they didn't work. Oh well, I guess that's part of the process.

Sorry about seeming so angry. I have just been very frustrated lately. Let me take this oppurtunity to clearly express my problems.

1) Save Game Buffer Error
2) Glitch
3) Pain Elementals won't generate Lost Souls

Also, Mr. Deepsea, I HAVE gotten ZDoom to work. The only thing with it is it is really choppy. Like it 'lags' a lot. I tried shutting down some of my programs on my toolbar and that did not help at all. The Beta 33 that you instructed me to download would not work for some reason. I could not unzip it. I must be downloading the wrong file or something. I don't know.

Also, Boom did not fix the glitch or the Pain Elemental thing. So unless ZDoom is in any other way unique, I doubt it will work. I guess I'll just keep trying. Another thing is it will occassionally give me a "Cannot Change Directory:Error" if I try to run it through the Start - Run menu. I have to go to programs and double click the MS-Dos program to get it to work, if that matters. I do not know why it won't work but that is where I stand.

ZDoom works fine. Save Game has been taken care of and the glitch is gone. Thank you.

The Pain Elementals still don't generate lost souls however. And I cannot run ZDoom in a maximized screen. Otherwise it works fine. The only other problem with it now is my music won't play any longer.

So how to you work on ZDoom with Wadauthor? Or can't you?

Black_Icon
February 13th, 2002, 12:22 PM
And how do you configure Joysticks etc. to ZDoom? I think that is about it. The Pain Elemental problem, configuring my joystick and the screen size problem.

To run ZDOOM full screen, go to the Options, Set Video Mode and change it to Full screen yes.

To use your joystick, edit the ZDOOM.INI file and change use_joystick to true. Windows automatically supplies the rest (assuming you have it identified to windows device manager).

Music? You should have DirectX 7 or later installed. I think Music defaults to direct sound. But make sure the FMOD.DLL you have is dated 11/30/01 or later (you may have accidently installed an old one is messing around). Beta 33 comes with that one.

Make sure you have the latest drivers for your sound card.

Do weapons shots work?

Why are there so many betas? It must get confusing.

So what happens if I have no ZDoom.ini file?

deepteam
February 14th, 2002, 08:37 AM
You have a ZDOOM.INI

ZDOOM automatically makes one when you run it in the folder it's installed it. Just look.

Black_Icon

Sorry but I don't have an .ini file anywhere. I even unzipped it again, played it and went back to my folder and it wasn't there. !!!

deepteam

First I'm assuming you are running BETA 33, exe date 2/5/2002

For positive it makes a ZDOOM.INI, so you must not be running beta 33 but instead the old 1.22 or older. I forget when it was switch to zdoom.ini used to be zdoom.cfg. So you have zdoom.cfg which means it's not beta 33.

Install and run beta 33 since any problems with 1.22 are old news.

Black_Icon
February 15th, 2002, 12:26 PM
OK... Yeah I was running ZDoom 1.22

Hopefully it will work now.

It never sieces to amaze me... More problems...

OK. I have gotten the joystick to work BUT whenever I press any button (to fire, use, jump, etc.) my screen always moves to the right for some stupid reason. It's like every joystick button is trying to move me to the right even though I don't have them set to do that.

deepteam

You did calibrate your joystick in Windows right?

Works ok for me.

I'm an oldtime joystick user. Sounds like your joystick is sending movement data or you are jiggling the stick while pushing buttons.

My opinion: forget ZDOOM, it's not really a beginners port. I'd start with something much more friendly like Legacy.

I've tried Legacy. My joystick wouldn't work with it for some reason. I have gotten it to work with ZDoom however. Beta 33 does make a difference! http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smilies/cwm1.gif

OK... Where and what do you suggest I do if I want to display a map for everyone to see (and play) that is going to be part of my upcoming TC?

Not to start a port debate, but ZDOOM and LEGACY are NO different re beginners. You are thinking HEXEN mode and that's totally OPTIONAL.

Anyone can run and make levels for ZDOOM in enhanced BOOM mode - which is basically no different than LEGACY.

If I had to pick one big improvement for ZDOOM it's performance. By far the fastest port available. In some areas. at least 2x faster. Walk up to a wall to see a fix Randy made there (I think you know the problem).

The one big improvement for Legacy are the nice 3d effects and the GL lighting is also very nice. OTOH, I hope they drop the "blurring" of graphics and pick up the high resolution texture/patch code Randy and I developed. Crisp and clear textures and you can make them very large too - with proper tiling and all that stuff.

See XTHEATER demo of these features at www.sbsoftware.com (http://www.sbsoftware.com) to see what I'm talking about.

All ports that work for you are "good" ports. Like anything else, it's not about good or bad, but instead whatever feature(s) appeal the most to one. I just listed some basic differences to any beginners reading this. There are other ports too that others prefer for various reasons.

I hope they fix the speed before anything.

How would you create a screen shot of your level? I practically got most things sorted out now, but I am still questioning a few things that I've never done. Thanks...

in Legacy

press ~ to bring up the console and then type

bind / screenshot

so now when you press the / key, it will take a screenshot of Doom.

Thanks... Remind me near the end the end of this project to send you $500 dollars or something... Or wait, maybe only $450... (Minus 50 bucks for laughing at me)

Hey does anyone have any ideas where to build a webpage? Don't they host those kinds of things around here? I must not be good enough ... http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smilies/cwm14.gif

Oh well...

go here (http://www.virtualmechanics.com/?dwarf) to download a free web page editor.

or you can go to Geocities and create a web page there.

Well... I created a little stupid web page to show off some of the screen shots from my first level. Remember you can contact me for anything...

The web page can be found here:

http://www.geocities.com/burningcarousel/Doom_Pictures.html

I am working on a fairly decent one but it is still in the construction stages. Sorry.
