View Full Version : How to make 3d floors and stuff?

I have downloaded several different programs (EdMap 1.40, WinDEU 5.24 for example. They're the only editors that works in my computer from what I have tested so long), but in none of them seems to have an option to apply those goddamn LineDef flags freely. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smilies/cwm23.gif
EdMap has this configuration file called "Actions.txt", but it doesn't accept flags over 255 in that list. (It flips to the beginning, for instance 301 becomes 45 etc.) WinDEU seems not even have such an elite feature. Is there any other editors/any magic tricks for solving this problem? http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smilies/cwm35.gif

Wadauthor is supposed to allow it with some config editing. DeePsea comes with configs for just about every known port but if you want levels with more than 800 lines you'll have to pay for it. Mystic uses Deth for 3D levels. I don't know the sites for any of these but you can find DeePsea here. (http://www.sbsoftware.com)

Wadauthor can do it without any special configs. Just right click on a line and select "edit raw data". It will probably give you an "invalid tag" error or something when you check the map for errors though. Just ignore it. It will still work properly in the game.

Nope, no invalid tag error or nothing (at least not with 3d floors).

You can also insert any linedef number you want with WinDEU 5.99b. However it is horribly buggy.

Oukiedoukie, I have now downloaded WinDEU, Deth and WadAuthor, and the summary is:
Deth doesn't work, WinDEU can't do those tricks, WadAuthor has just been downloaded and I'm preparing to install it. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smilies/cwm20.gif
ps. that URL for wadauthor doesn't work. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smilies/cwm22.gif

In what way does DETH not work, have you checked the options in the .cfg files.
Unless you are using one of the new (post win98se) operating systems DETH should work fine. Here are my cfg and ini files, just unzip them to your DETH directory assuming its C:\deth.

My doom directories are on the D:\ drive so you will probably have to do some editing.

Besides all the regular Legacy stuff, DeePsea directly supports saving Fraggle Script in Legacy - it's in the level header - the ONLY editor to do so.
No need to awkwardly jump back and forth to insert scripts using their utility. F7/Save Lump to Current Level. Pick the map level name as the lump name to save to. Then give it the name of your fraggle script file.
And if anyone here keeps in touch with the developers, please tell them they broke "tall" textures when they changed the patch/texture code.
EDGE works, BOOM works, ZDOOM works, Legacy does not. Just shows a "white" area.
I'm display patches up to 508 tall and the textures are 2048 x 512. They could be 8k x 8k, although practically speaking, 2048 x 1024 should plenty for most users.
I'll post the XTHEATER level with all this stuff hopefully in a few, so they can see for themselves what I'm talking about.
Note: There are transparent doors that won't work only because I relied on older methods that worked on DOOM - so ignore that - I think it just shows an open area- forget, been testing a few different ports to see how they handle the textures.

Im impressed. If that stuff about big textures isnt bullshit you have probably won another customer, even if the Legacy guys dont get it fixed. I am poor (unemployed) but if somethings worth buying its worth buying.

You don't have to register to use all the texture tools - although the defaults are set up for the currently loaded level - making it a bit easier.
If you insist http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smile.gif, make the level in whatever editor and do the big patches and textures in DeePsea.
Mystic should like some of the Egyptian stuff I made - always been a favorite of mine.
PS. Mystic's "beautiful women" are the stars in Xtheater.
It's a large download because of all the new textures. Haven't trimmed it down yet to delete all the ones I didn't use, but probably 2MB zipped.

Dont you ever venture over to doomworld? you missed some great arguments and flamewars during the summer. I had a great time over there, then I would come back here and pretend to be a nice, harmless, helpful type.
Theres not been much going on over there recently but I intend to stir things up a bit later in the month.

Now this is going to sound odd. The ZDOOM I'm using is not "officially" released yet. I didn't know that the current version (beta 28a) did not support BOOM style texture code.
So until Randy releases the next beta, only BOOM/PRBOOM, ETERNITY and EDGE show the graphics completely.
I tried to make it so the widest range of ports could play it. Hence, EDGE will have issues with the DOORS (as will any GL port), but the main focus was on the textures - so no biggie. JDOOM doesn't work, nor LEGACY.
ZDOOM really looks the best and plays the fasted of the above. Should I release the level anyway and then hope that Randy will release the new version soon? The file is about 2.2MB zipped.

Hi Deepteam, which port were you using for the screengrab on your website? I like your homemade egyptian stuff, I stole most of mines from museum websites etc. (I still had to do a lot of work on them).
I have decided to use that link banner of yours in my next doom page update. Is it okay to provide direct links to the zips? I really dont have the space to mirror the files.
This is really annoying, now Im going to have to download that effing eternity thing, and the latest EDGE and the new ZDOOM when it comes out (must be due soon, he updates it fortnightly doesnt he?).
I will not rush into this, Im having fun testing the new Legacy and collecting more girly pictures for my other hobby.

The screenshots were using ZDOOM (a version I snatched while nobody was looking). Randy really doesn't release all that much. In fact, I wish he'd release MORE. Especially hope he releases soon so the textures will be done proper justice.
If I was in that kind of environment, I'd probably release a LOT more - to catch bugs before I got too far along. It's very difficult to test all the cases.
ZDOOM is at least TWICE as fast as any other port out there (at 1024x768 resolution) and looks the best. Too bad Legacy doesn't do the tall texture stuff - otherwise it would be 2nd on the list - lights look really cool in Legacy.
I "borrowed" the Egyptian stuff from various sites - don't think any were museums. There were a lot I didn't use. I like the contrast of the Egyptian wall painting vs the stone and brick.
You'll like seeing your babies on the big screen http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smile.gif I did. Too bad people are so damn conservative.

I recognise the Egyptian pictures, I 'borrowed' the same ones, but not for my wads, they are free clipart if I remember rightly. Im a bit obsessed with ancient Egypt so I have quite a collection of that sort of stuff.

They weren't clip art as such, but actual pictures of actual Egyptian stuff. So you'd find the exact same pictures in many places since they represent the real thing. The only Egyptian image that wasn't from a real object was the "artistic" rendering of the face on the outside.
I just added some more detail to a few areas to simulate the atmo a bit more.
The new (soon to be out) ZDOOM rocks at high res compared to any of the other ports. I didn't realize it at the time, but not only did the version I use (ZDOOM with a date of 10/30/01 or later) show the tall textures, but Randy changed the display code too. The speed is amazing on a GE256 - other cards will vary.
This should prove especially useful for slower machines with at least a 1/2 way decent video card.
Btw, the new FMOD 3.4 should be used to avoid system problems even with beta28a. http://www.fmod.org/

Oh, I actually forgot the most important thing - this is the first time you can get the patches to look just about like the original without loosing too much detail (via shrinking) - in fact, about 4 times more detail with the samples I did.
The whole point of the level was to show not only TALL texures, but patches that are up to 508 tall - something that was not possible before DeePsea.
I've also just invented an extension method to permit any DOOM port to show patches even taller than 508 and still use the DOOM format.
For practical reasons, probably 1024 is a reasonable limit, although technically it's 32k! I described the method in the ZDOOM forum, hoping Randy will pick up on this some time in the future. Walls and such take on a whole new look doing this - no tiling, no hard work/tricks to get around the prior limits.

Well, Randy and I are discussing the details of implemenation - since you'd have to say the size you want a texture displayed to get it to look "hi res" close up. IOW, if you had a texture that was 1024 x 1024, you'd specify that the actual size was 25% (or 256x256). So up close, where a texture now "blows up", you'd get the original 1024x1024 image.
Man, this will make a level look like nothing has ever looked before. As good in pixel density than current games - no kidding here. Just won't have the color depth - later on that one.
