alright, there seems to be a lot of Doom editors out there, but which one is really the best one out there?
Theres DCK, Wadauthor, Deepsea, Deth, Doomcad, DMAP, and Hellmaker.
Wadauthor, Deepsea, and Deth, all tie in for good editors.
I like line drawing, with wadauthor, you have to make a sector after sector and move the vertex around to get your shape of the room, too much things to do...and Deth is really cool looking, but its just too hard to use. Deepsea is my pick, and the money's worth it. It be great if every editor was combined into one good editor....
Whats your opionion on the other editors?

DEEPSEA has the features, but WadAthor is free and the next version will have linedef drawing. Then there's WADED, if you don't mind building tiny levels and the constant lock-ups. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smile.gif

Since when was WA free? John Williston would LOVE to read that one (he'd be rolling in his grave if he was dead).
I told him his way of doing shareware was just not going to work - but having you say FREE is a bit too much. Hope he changed the way he did it - since that wouldn't be fair to him.
Don't think WA will have line drawing any time soon. It's WAY harder than what he choose to initially do. ALL his routines need serious revamping - that's why it's dragging on and on.
Prefabs are duck soup. I KNOW all the lines that are created making it very easy to assign sector assignments to the sidedefs.
IOW, very little code required for prefabs. Even DEU/Windeu and DCK did prefabs for the very same reason. It's simple code.
DeeP/DeePsea makes prefabs completely interactive BEFORE the are just plopped down. Ben (DCK) and I shared a lot of common ideas in this and other concepts.
If it weren't for DEU being the most common editor back then, I would have modified GUI styles a lot sooner - since DEU's is not the most efficient http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smile.gif

DEU's prefabs didn't work for me. The cursor was fucked up. I just used their slow method of line drawing, often plotting every vertex for a room before adding any lines. The sidedefs were always screwed up, but this wasn't documented so it took a month to figure out.

WadAuthor works the best for me. I really loved DoomED, but I had enough of its wad-ruining bugs.
I'm not a serious enough Doom editor fanatic to go place a price tag on my Doom editing entertainment. It's just Doom, and that's that. It's an old yet cool game that can occasionally steal a few hours a week from you when you should be doing other more important things.

I've been using WadAuthor ever since I began editing (about two years ago), and IMO it's the best thing to happen to Doom editing. I find it the easiest to use, and the most veratile as well, though in all fairness I do not like the internal node builder that is provided with the programme, due to the fact that it tends to get buggy after the map reaches a certian point (I never figured out why). Anyway, back to the point, IMO WadAuthor and ZenNode working together rule the roost.

That's what I do. I run ZenNode instead of that dreadfully slow DoomCad node builder, which is buggy at times, especially around complicated objectoids. Unfortunately I had to watch the doomcad node build make all those nodes for 32 levels, over and over and over again, before I clued in to how ZenNode worked. We're talkin' about hours of wasted time waiting for that doomcad node builder to do it's thing. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smilies/cwm36.gif

I'm not very good at figuring out how to get anything DOS to work. As a matter of fact, I couldn't use DOS to save my life. I have ZenNode set up to run by doing a double click on my wad file, otherwise I'd be screwed. Fancy options? I've never seen any fancy options and probably never will, unless a Windows version arrives on the scene.. Better chance to have a 10 ton meteor land in my back pocket than to see that happen.

I'm writing a GUI for ZenNode! I'm making a config file thinghy that's a real pain in the ass to program. I hate doing readable config files. My efforts to make that user-friendly are going to take most of the effort. There's nothing I hate more than picking through a bunch of strings and finding out what to store in what variable. It'll look pretty good in the end though.
I'm not doing anything about ZenNode's fancy config stuff though. I'll add the option to include them, but there's no way in Hell I'm writing anything to make them. Nobody uses them anyway. Now Doom_Dude and Mystic can see what all the options are. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smilies/cwm4.gif

It looks pretty cool already. I'm having trouble figuring out where to put the button to run ZenNode. I might actually finish it this weekend, but I don't know. That config stuff is really really boring to code.
The rest of the program is very simple. All it does is take your options, and translate them into a command line for ZenNode. The hardest part is designing a really good interface. I'm still not quite sure how to go about the merging multiple wads option (hmmm, just had a new idea). I want custom profiles too, so I'm working out how I want that done. My only other problem is that I don't know how to kill the ZenNode window when it's done. There might just be some flag for it somewhere.

I don't think it can get any easier than a double click on the wad for node building. But others would prefer to leave that function for other purposes.

That's the problem. That technigue is fine until you install something that goes and steals the .wad file association away from the double click of the mouse...
So cheers to Aliotroph? for giving this ZenNode Launcher of his a shot.

I just got most of the config reading stuff done. These things get better every time I try one. Now I have to figure out a better way to write them. I know how, but I don't really like my method.
Should I just load the default settings every time or have an option to set the default to a specific config file? When you see all the options ZenNode has you'll know why I'm asking. I discovered you can ever use different BSP algorithms.
I still haven't quite decided on the interface for adding multiple wad files. I'm getting closer though. Those will be stored in the configs too. I think maybe I'll have the user add them to a list box.
