Hello doomers - i am looking to extract the sounds from the games "doom" and "doom2". I found a certain "Pak explorer" for quake and quake2 - but im not certain it works on the doom series as well - basically i just need to extract to wav... any ideas? -thx

Try XWE (http://www.doomworld.com/xwe/). Lots of people are saying how goods it is for doom editing. Never tried it myself but its better than pakexplorer because that's for opening pak files. There are no pak files in Doom. Hope this helps ya.

DeePsea has purpose built tools for specific tasks. This separation of function makes it easy to keep focus and not get confused http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smile.gif
1. press F7
2. select EXPORT lump to a file
3. on the left side select Sounds (uncheck the rest)
4. press Show Types Selected (So now all you see are the sounds. If you didn't filter, then everything is available for export)
5. Export one or many sounds at once.
To export all the sounds as WAV at once, enable Grouping then press Select ALL, now press WAV. To select any combination at once, use the standard Windows convention of Ctrl+Left Mouse click and select the sounds desired.
All this has no limits even in the shareware version. As always, press the Help button for detailed help on what I just wrote here.

There are a few FREE utilities to do this which are all excellent for what you want to do, NWT (new wad tools) Wintex and XWE. If you cant find them email me and I will send you a copy. For XWE see the news story on the Newdoom.com page.
Im suppose I should put this sort of thing on my Doom pages, maybe this week.

I always am amused at the "free" comments. What exactly does "free" have to do with the original question? Answer: Absolutely nothing.
DeePsea lump manipulation Tool are "FREE". You don't have to register to use it for ANYTHING you like. Easier, STABLE, fast, well tested, well DOCUMENTED and lots of safety checks you won't find anywhere else. All for FREE.
Merges multiple PWADS (as many as you like) with TEXTUREx PNAMES and patches too! That means that any new TEXTURE names and patch PNAMES are automatically and CORRECTLY merged. So you can automatically combine just about anything. NOTHING else does this.
P.S. Wintex screws up merging 2 and is a bitch for the new ports. Just merge DOOM and DOOM2 and see what you get with Wintex http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smile.gif NWT is just archaic, sort of like using any DOS editor http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smile.gif

I have a couple of suggestions for deepteam that may make DeePsea more friendly to some (these aren't necessary or urgent):
1. Multiple interface modes for those who are too lazy to learn new methods (mostly for drawing stuff). This is one of those things that even I don't really want anymore.
2. Different coloured surfaces in 3D mode. I think it would be easier to use if all the walls had some shading or different colours. They wouldn't blend.
Don't worry about the "FREE" comments. Mystic just has a little bit of a grudge methinks. It would be nice if it was free though because I can't send money over the net. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smilies/cwm1.gif

1. Multiple interface modes for those who are too lazy to learn new methods (mostly for drawing stuff).
----------------------------------------
Not sure what you mean. I'd appreciate a more detaled explanation either here or please email me (if this is not what you meant).
You can start drawing various ways. Keyboard ctrl+D or mouse double left click. The floating Toolbar method is maybe the easiest to learn to start drawing or create prefabs? For relaxed editing I prefer the Toolbars http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smile.gif
The Windows editors all use a "dialog" style. DeePsea varies from them all by using dynamic auto focused popups for the categories/types. They are very fast to select from.
Listboxes are easier code and that's why you see them in the other editors, but clumsier to select from. I borrowed that from DEU. (Did you mean a listbox style?)
Another style consideration is a larger configurable Toolbar (like the little ones now) that would have a whole bunch of commands on it at once, the width of the screen (or the height).
But any "optional" configurations means one has to read the help. That will only lead to more "complicated" comments, when the actual operation of DeePsea is as simple or simpler than any other editor - just ignore the options http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smile.gif
----------------------------------------
2. Different coloured surfaces in 3D mode. I think it would be easier to use if all the walls had some shading or different colours. They wouldn't blend.
----------------------------------------
I totally agree. That was just a quickie. You can change the colors though. Press F1 while in the display and see the commands. Example, Ins/Del cycles colors.
Someday will do a textured display. When I get in a "math" mood http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smile.gif

I knew about the colour change. I got confused when looking at what I had made though. I figured you had more plans for that one.
What I meant about interfaces is the option to have a drawing mode that works like BUILD. That editor kicked the crap out of anything I saw for DooM. I could plot sectors rediculously fast when I was half-asleep and drunk. Do you have customizable keys?

Damn. I'm trying to find out how to scroll portions of windows in VB. I found a cheap way to scroll tiles in my map editor (not for DooM) but I want a smooth scrolling way (I also need it for the game engine).
There's something called a Multipage control, but I can't figure out how to add one to my project.

What I meant about interfaces is the option to have a drawing mode that works like BUILD.
-------------------------------------------
Well, the way the BUILD engine works is totally different from DOOM. No sidedefs and all that stuff - meaning the editor could be rock dumb in that department.
Interestingly back then, I had quite a few requests to do a BUILD replacement.
BUILD took up too much screen space for the "options" leaving very little for the map. Sort of a schizo editor. Cool 3D texturing, below average 2D features.
Other than that, drawing is drawing http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smile.gif

Damn. I'm trying to find out how to scroll portions of windows in VB.
-----------------------------------
You can't scroll a "portion" of a window -easily-. You could do it by doing your own clipping area.
Maybe you meant a screen area within a screen area (IOW windows) - like the DeePsea texture browsers?
Essentially, if you built a "bitmap" and blast it to the screen it will be smooth.
You build the data in a buffer and then once it's built, blast (BitBlt) it to the screen. So in VB, just create the data before you pass it to the display system.
I haven't messed with VB for 7 years http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smile.gif Back then not powerful enough. A lot better now.

I dont have a grudge, just a wicked sense of humour.
The only reason I dont use Deepsea is because I dont like it, nothing to do with money.
If it was money I would just crack the thing.
Like a lot of wadsters I have a few favourite programs I enjoy using, not because they are free (though thats nice) but because they do the job.
I would never grudge paying for my favourite editor, I would see it as money well spent. I am forever in debt to the Doomgods who created DETH.

What I'm trying to do in VB is have a scrollable area for my map tiles. The only way I've figure out how to do this is by using the values of the scrollbars to move the tilesets over a row and draw the new tiles. What I want is a way to scroll that section of the window (like Cartographer for TA: Kingdoms). I've seen programs that do this. I can't really just make it into one picture because that would kill the drag-and-drop effect I have with the tiles. When I place tiles it's supposed to act like unit placement in an rts game (shows preview on the spot.
How do you scroll an image anyway? Not that it matters because that won't work for the physics of my game engine either.

I have been adding the finishing touches to my Freedoom level (map06), just need to add the exit and difficulty settings now. It should be out of the way by the end of this week, I will also try to knock out another mystic wad by the weekend.
I have also decided to throw together a megawad (mysticmeg) with modified versions of all my deathmatch sized levels and a few from Big Al and Joe Peat, Im planning to add new (well, borrowed from other TC's) weapons as well as the new textures Ive been slaving away on recently. This should take a couple of weeks.
Im also hoping to get over my choosy 'authors block' which has stopped me finishing the last two levels of my Mummy Phuquers 3D megawad/TC.

Stop playing with avatars, they're only going to dump you in the long run. Once you run out of imps, its off the the next victum.

Okay Doom_Dude, you got me. Forgot to run that damned spell checker that time. I'll stop acting hypocritical about X-Doom's mistakes from no one. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smilies/cwm1.gif I agree that the eye must come back. So I can get the evil feeling about you again that made you the kickass person that your known for. Sheet, I caught Alio's Kickass Deficit Disorder. Can't stop saying it. Kickass kickass kickass, give me some Impalin.

LOL Man, did I ever send a ripple through this place or what?!? There were DooMer chicks, chick avatars, 50 posts a day, and "kick-ass." My occasional lapses into Java or VB code seem to be causing havoc too.

Learn a real language why don't you C++.

No time. VB is a hold-over hobby from high school and Java is more than one university course this year. I'm having to learn it at warp speed and sometimes it really hurts my brain. I spend up to seven hours a day in their damn coputer lab because my friend keeps forgetting his Code Warrior CD at home.
I'd like to learn C++ eventually though. Most game stuff is coded there and games are KEWL.

Just download the JDK for the Sun site or get the free version of JBuilder from Borland site.

I have a Java compiler somewhere. I just don't want to deal with the mess of re-arranging my multi-class projects. Programming is only fun with expensive IDEs that do half the work so I can spend more time thinking about the fun stuff (like making neat things with random numbers).

JBuilder IDE is good, even on the free students version. If you've got a fast machine & lots of memory that is, with 640mb it flys http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smilies/cwm4.gif

640k should be enough for anyone, not 640 megs. Or maybe it was 640 gigs? Just grab 640 terrabytes of Ram to be on the safe side.
