Heya! I'm messing around with XWE and making some kewl textures thanx to ReX. Anyhow, I was wondering if it's possible to get custom Flats into the game? I can't say I've ever seen anybody ask this question before and I don't remember ever seeing custom Flat textures in any wads. Whats up with that?

I don't know XWE but I think there was some trick to doing flats in DooM. Can't remember why though. I'm sure you can do it because FreeDooM was its own flats and it's being done with DeuTex and similar tools.

Swheet. I always liked making floor textures and would love to get some of em into the game. Maybe if I poke around with XWE I'll figure it out.

Vilecore is getting a nice polish. Made a kick ass brick texture and made a revision of one of Doom II's doors.

Oh yeah, I was supposed to poke around and see about this Flat thinghy..

It's even easier to insert custom flats using XWE than it is to insert custom patches and create new textures.

1. Open up your wad in XWE
2. Insert a new entry, and rename it to FF_START.
3. Insert your flat(s)
4. Insert a new entry, and rename it FF_END

That's it. (Remember that your Flat must be exactly 64*64.)

Mystic uses custom flats. He's the only guy I can remember doing that. He likes to use the teleporter flats from Heretic in his DM maps. His Mummy Phuquers maps have loads of custom textures and flats. Other than him I can't think of any examples though.

I have to check out Mystic's wads sometime soon and from the screenies I've seen his wads look very kool.

I know of lots of wads with custom textures, sprites, and skys but I cannot recall any with custom Flats. I'm not even sure if Looney's Hunted wad had custom Flats. Anyhow, this XWE program sure kicks the crapp out of Wintex. I tried numerous times in the past to get custom textures in DooM and I always ended up confused and pissed off, until now.

I used WinTex to import custom flats into wads. If you select 'Load entry from file' from the edit menu and use the name of an existing flat, like Floor4_8, it should work.

I wonder if the Aliens TC used custom flats. After what I saw with the monsters I wouldn't be surprised.

Wintex might be great for some people but now that I'm using XWE, there's no going back!

Yeah, since it's a Total Conversion, it should have new Flats.

Gothicdm and Darkening2 both use custom flats and are well worth downloading (my 2 favourite wads for playing).

You can even use new flats with your own flat names but as far as I know the only editor that lets you use them is DCK (the Legacy people told me ages ago)

Kewl Rex. There is a multitude of levels out there that I've never played.

I'm using DoomCad 5.1 and making Flats with new names. I started with SLIME18 and I'm on SLIME22. I had to pull a trick to do it thou. I copied the doom2.wad and put the original in a seperate folder for restoration later. I'm putting my Flats and Textures into the copy of the doom2.wad so that DoomCad will recognise that they exist. At the same time I'm putting em in a new wad. The tex wad and map wad don't need to be merged until after the map(s) are done as I'm using Legacy. I just choose both wads in the Legacy launcher and she runs fine. When I'm done I'll just merge the texture wad with my map wad and restore the good copy of the doom2.wad I know it sounds crazy but it works.

I remember all that palaver from my DEU and NWT days, I use DETH and Wintex now, both fannytastic programs.

WinDEU 5.99b lets you use custom flats as well. Too bad it's so buggy. Yadex might do that too, but I'm not quite sure about it.

Seems to me the last full version of DEU was 5.21. After that they did a thousand betas and never bothered to fix them before adding more features.

I found a reference to Heth in a doom related search but the doom page in question was defunct, dead, gone, kaput, detroyed, imobilized, etc,.... There is a HETH, but what it is and what it does is unbeknownst to me.

HETH is a version of DETH for HEXEN. ZETH was derived from HETH. Only differences are a new BOOM/ZDOOM flags for linedefs and sectors.
