There's 4.7? I was using 4.5. Where'd you get that? If I can get it I might be able to help.

Is the missing file vbrun300.dll? If so then you need to install visual basic.

You don't need to install Visual Basic. Just get one of us to e-mail you the file. I think some versions of Wintext come with vbrun300.dll.

He doesnt have an email address. Do a search on vbrun300.dll you can use google on my web page at http://www.gtroad.net and download it, copy it to the windows directory (or windows\system) and it should work.

Are you using Win2000? If so, then WinTex will not work. I've tried and I've tried, but it just doesn't. I get a GPF error and WinTex refuses to load. I even emailed Oliver Montanuy, the creator, about the problem but he couldn't help. He didn't even realize that there was a problem trying to run WinTex in Win2K.

Back up a second, guys. 4.5, 4.7?...
Where can I download newer versions of Wintex beyond 4.3? I can only find 4.3 everywhere, including doomworld.

Check the news archive here at newdoom, there have been a few updates to wintex in the last couple of months, the latest one was quite recent, last week I think. The news story has a link to the page where you can download it.

With all these Doom programs that don't work in W2K, what hope have we got with XP?

I don't think I'll ever upgrade to 2K or XP. I like my backwards compatibility with DOS.

I use a dual boot W2k/Win98 system. It was easy to setup.
Play all my old DOS based stuff in Win98, do everything else in W2k. Best of both worlds.

Im with you DooMad, I have loads of old favourite Dos software. And theres no way Im faffing about with a dual boot system just so I can use all my favourite software.
I wonder if those guys with the new operating systems ever use them for anything, none of the software seems to work on them.

I use the new OS because I got fed up reinstalling Win98 every two or three months when it gets messed up.
I seem to remember Mystic swearing that he would never use, Win98, ICQ, chatrooms, message board forums and look at him now.
Give him a 1/2 a year and he will be swearing by 2000 or XP too. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smilies/cwm1.gif
Anyway how hard is it to select 1 for W2K and 2 for Win98 when booting? Its hardly faffing about is it.

Anyone else this attached to DOS?
Or is Mystic the only one.

Actually, in some respects DOS is easier to use (and not just because people have gotten used to it over the years) and less messy. The newer OSs take file and system management control away from the average user (e.g. system registry). Unfortunately, with the interdependency of software and hardware nowadays, DOS is inadequate.

Less messy??
What about all the memory manager/ config.sys/ autoexec.bat hoops you had to jump through to get enough memory to get some games working.
I'm glad I didn't get a PC until after Win95 was out.

LOL - exactly. Not to mention that the video drivers could be a nightmare for games. Even VESA had enough quirks to make one give up. Then the mouse drivers had issues (cursor stuff) and so on and so forth. Bah, worthless OS in most regards.
About the only thing useful is the file manipulation stuff (and some other command line tools), but THAT feature is exactly the same in Win2k or XP - just type CMD in "run" and LOOK what you get. So you can have your cake and eat it too http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smile.gif
XP has a compatibility mode that takes care of most "old" games. DOOM runs fine. IOW, XP is a lot better than Win2k in the game department and in hardware/driver support - so don't judge it by that standard.

That is what MS hype says, but does it live up to it in pratice?

Simply put, YES. Been running (actually Mike has) XP for 4 months or so (really, don't remember exactly, but since beta 1).
We obviously haven't run everything - sometimes a game will take over the machine, which is interesting considering how XP is supposed to be able to take control away from any program. Looks like a DirectX bug.
Compared to Win2k (which blows in every way getting drivers and games to work), this thing is sweet.
For comparison, we uninstalled win2k in a month, so worthless was it in the games and driver/hardware department http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smile.gif

That rocks! I have a Hell of a time trying to get DOS games to work on computers with Windows ME. That stupid OS has no DOS compatibility at all!!!!

Oh sorry - something that slipped my mind. I should have qualified my XP answer a little http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smile.gif
You do need at least a PIII 1000 to get DOS emulation to work reasonably fast http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smile.gif That's because it's intercepting "DOS" api's and translating them. Takes a big hit doing this. So the good news is that it works, the bad news is that on older machines it is slow.
This technique is actually very old (like 30 years old), so what may happen -IF- MS gets enough complaints, is that they tune some often used parts to get the speed back (that's what was done in the past). So email MS and tell them you want DOOM to run at "normal" speed.
