All you need is:
- A terrain generator,
- Skill for drawing in pixels,
- More patience than sense.
I've made 3 so far and am working on the 4th. Once you have rendered your terrain, you can import it into your favourite image editor, and resize it to 256x128.
The difficult bit is making it tile. That usually takes me about 30 minutes, but it's worth it. Then you import it into your wad.

Hey, how about posting a link to your creations. I'm always looking for tall skies for use in my levels. (Of course you'll get the credit for the skies.) Also, shouldn't the skies be 256 wide instead of 128 wide(perhaps that's what you meant by 256*128)?

I got the skies, and they look cool. You should consider making skies that are 240 pixels tall, so that they can be used in ZDooM, Legacy, and other ports with mlook.

About the 240 pixel high sky textures, will they look weird in regular DooM?

Of course you won't get the benefit of the taller skies, because you won't have mlook.

In one of the other (related) threads it was pointed out to me that the Legacy sky should actually be 255 pixels high, otherwise you get tuti-fruti effect at the bottom.
I will sort some of my better skies and post them for you Rex, I love making sky textures, they add a lot to the feel of a level.
Im not sure doom will run with the taller skies, Im sure I had problems with that in the past.

Of course, in a typical level you won't be able to see a tall sky from top to bottom in the same view. You'll need to use mlook, at which point you will be able to detect the tutti-frutti at the bottom. But there are creative ways to avoid this problem.

In fact I tried it out just before my reply to DooM_Dude on this thread.
