View Full Version : Joining Identical Sectors

I am making a new Doom level and have the following problem. I have adjacent sectors that are identical (=same floor/ceiling height, flats, tags tc) and I would like to join these sectors. The problem is that there are 100's of sectors like this, and joining them manually is a pain. Is there a program that does this automatically?

part of the art of map making , tedious at times.. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smile.gif

With DETH joining connected sectors if fairly simple. Just select the linedef and use the "Delete lindef and join sectors" option which is under the F8 menu.
Can be done with only 2 key presses, so even with 100s of linedefs it shouldn't take long.
Another possible way would be to mass select all the sectors linedefs and manually edit which sector they belong to. Some editors might not let you do this and it could cause problems with your node builder?

The "join sectors" command is on the editors I use (WinDEU, Yadex), but it is still tedious. Especially since I might have to do it several times. (The basic map is generated automatically, and if I want to change something, it's back to square one.)
It's understandable if this kind of a program doesn't exist, not many people need it. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smilies/cwm36.gif

What do you mean generated automatically? Are you using Sleige?

The level I'm doing is quite simple in principle, but very boring to create on a normal level editor. So I wrote my own program that creates the level. It creates the basic level geometry, which I then import to an editor.
The downsize of this is that there are a lot of identical adjacent sectors. They don't cause any trouble, but I'd like to get rid of them.

That serves you right for being lazy.

Why would you want to join a whole bunch of little sectors together when one big one would suffice? Unless ya need the joined linedefs to create bars or something like that. Dude, try WadAuthor, it's MUCH easier.

yes i think that sort of thing would be alot eazyer to do in wad author also..
but it seems like your auto builder would take the fun and creativity out of map making , but if your gonna go at it that way ? you might as well make that program join all those sectors too.. lol
why not do what everybody else does and make your map wad from scratch ?

The program is not a be-all end-all level creator. I just did it to create this particular level (and also just to see if I could do it). It allows me to experiment freely with the basic level layout: what if the whole level was a bit bigger, what if the height differences were larger, etc. With the creator program the changes I make are uniform across the whole level. When I am happy with the basic layout, I'll finish the level with a level editor.
Besides, it's fun to create levels large enough to choke ZenNode. Amazingly enough, WinDEU's nodebuilder doesn't freeze on these levels.
MR_ROCKET: The fact that everyone else does something is (for me anyway) a perfectly valid reason to do it differently. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smilies/cwm1.gif

I know its way off topic but were you born under Aquarius?
You cant be bothered to manually join sectors or delete linedefs but you are willing to code a programme to make levels for you, it only takes a few minutes to fix sectors like you described, Im sure most editors have a quick way of doing this, I know its easy in DETH as I like doing just what you describe once Im finished a wad, just to make it awkward for newbies to modify my levels, hehehe.

Deleting the unnecessary linedefs by hand is way easier than coding a program for it. It's just that if such a program had already existed, it would have saved me a lot of trouble. Guess I'll have to do it manually.
Mystic: Nope, I'm a taurus. It's just that making the program was less tedious than making the basic level with an editor. Less work and more finished levels means more Doom.

Hey Pate. That sounds like a very kewl program you have there. Just goes to show that you like to do things differently. Nothing wrong with that http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smile.gif

no theres nothing wrong with being a little different hehe .. we all are and we all pretty much do most things differently ,and thats ok..
i think we were just building an impassable wall when we thought you were trying to find an easy way out.. lol
but chances are , you will have to join all those little sectors manually.. -far as i know anyhows.. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smile.gif

Now that I think about this. I used to mess with a program called Randseen. Here is a part of the readne: <BLOCKQUOTE><font size="1" face="Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, serif">quote:</font><hr width="100%" size="1" noshade><font face="Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, serif" size="2">RANDSEEN is a small random DOOM scenario generator that uses
various labyrinth algorithms to generate DOOM levels for YOUR
pleasure.</font><hr width="100%" size="1" noshade></BLOCKQUOTE>
I used it and it made a basic map that needed a shit load of work to make it look half nice. I deleted the program when my Virus scan prog reported some kinda virus in the folder someplace. That was ages ago, but I can see how a program like this can help to lay down a foundation from which to build a kewl map.
There was anouther prog out there someplace that did the same thing, but I can't remember what it was called.....

I'd like to see one that could do 3D Legacy wads. I bet that would be hard to code!

That other program Doom_dude is Slige (http://www.doomworld.com/slige). And you can get ride of identical sectors and sidedefs with DeeP, course your levels will have to fall below the shareware limits (of 800 linedefs and 1200 sidedefs).

I am told that the original bsp used by id for making DooM automatically merged identical sectors.
Aparently, that is why rising stair sectors in DooM have alternating 99 and 999 sector tags. They were given the tags to prevent them from being merged together with ther surrounding floor.

I downloaded idBSP and tried it, but it just crashes. Either the level's too large, or the program doesn't like to be run under Windows. Guess it's back to the old drawing board.
