View Full Version : Editor Straw Poll

Lets put this "DeepSee V DETH/DEU/etc" debate/flame to bed.
Its simple vote on what editors people use.
No flames, no personal attacks, no cheap shots, no muck raking, no lies, no clever arguments, none of that stuff.
Just simply a count of how many people use what editor.

I use DETH.

I use notepad to build my wads. Nodes building is way more efficient if I do it in my head. Same with mapping.
Actually I used to use DEU, but it doesn't support Legacy. Now I'm in a null hole and don't know what to use.

LOL - forum postings always result in a meaningless poll for several reasons:
1. people don't want to get involved with people "knowing" who they are.
2 it's very susceptible to ghosted posts.
3. You need a fairly large number of posts to be valid - it nevers gets there.
There was a poll on DoomWorld a while back. Don't remember the exact numbers. IIRC WA was like 27%, DeeP and DCK around 22% each, and DEU/DETH got a very tiny percentage like 5%. I don't remember DOOMCAD and "other" either. Seems they were above DEU/DETH too.
Like 500 votes total? If nothing was amiss, almost enough. You need at least 1000 to be statistically sound.

DeepTeam what's not clear about the above statement?
Was your post a vote?

I think he might be trying to get banned here too. Maybe he can use being banned from everywhere as a clever marketing ploy.
By which time he will be the most disliked person in the Doom community.
The guy has a real problem with his self esteem.

Hardly a clever argument. DOOMWORLD did exactly what I wrote. Polls in a forum are meaningless for the reasons stated. That's not a flame nor any of the other things you list. Nice try trying to distort, but no cigar.
Try THINKING about what I wrote, rather than trying to justify YOUR flaming attempts.
So now logic is invalid? LOL - go ahead and post whatever, it just doesn't mean anything.
OTOH, Mystic seems to be flagrantly violating your statements. Mmmm, who's doing what?

I'm not surprised nobody uses DEU. It's kind of old and it has problems. I'm just saying it (and things like it) are what I use. This isn't Doomworld so we don't need to know about their poll. It's not a popularity contest. We're only talking about editors and what we use. I'm not even sure how this got started, but I can't see why anyone needed to start a flame war.
I know lots of mappers who all use different tools. It doesn't matter as long as it works for that guy. Why is DeePTeam so mad? We didn't flame him first in this post. Anger like that will only discourage people from using your software. DeePsea looks promising so why ruin it?
Sorry about all that. Flame wars just bug me because they get stupid to read through.

Here we go again.
What statement in this thread or ANY thread indicates I'm "mad"? Actually READ what I wrote in the prior - I even said it wasn't a flame. How clear do I have to be.
OTOH, if you persist, quote the "flame". I'm not mad at all - The opposite, I'm having fun. There's too little time in one's life to be "mad".
Me challenging you (like now) is NOT a flame. By your interpretation, YOU are flaming. Are you flaming?
If explaining something to show how someone is wrong is interpreted as being "mad", then no wonder nothing ever progresses. OTOH, if one has an open mind, then things move forward.
Nowhere did I or have I challenged what editor anyone uses (something you implied). You are right, whatever works for someone is all that's required. However, I will challenge incorrect statements and I will toss taunts BACK at a poster - sorry about that, but they deserve it http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smile.gif

Funny, I don't remember accusing you of flaming in this thread. I was just worried this topic would turn into that. I've seen some nasty ones on other forums and that's why I like it here.
Perhaps some of us have misunderstood the directness you use when correcting someone in these forums. Sometimes it just sounds like anger or sarcasm. I do think you began the flam war on Doomworld though. It may not have been your intention, but it happened because they responded negatively to your comments about their silly questions/assertions (those happen all the time, see what I said in the other thread).
It's true that a poll on editors won't give any useful stats, but it doesn't matter. It ws just done for curiosity. Your first post on this strand actually doesn't sound very obnoxious at all. I think they just thought yu were braking the rules of the topic (I guess I am too http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smilies/cwm1.gif ).
PS. If I was sounding like an evil hypocrite before I wasn't trying to. Like I said though, I didn't actually accuse you of flaming here in that post. Sorry for any misunderstandings.

A poll would be usless when we all know the best editor is Slige. Just type in some parameters and you got level. Make a megawad in ten minutes or your mony back.

I have to agree, that SLIGE is an amazing little program.
I have a few SLIGE levels laying around my hard drive that only need a bit of tidying up to be quite smart.
I am surprised that not many people seem to use it, especially newbies. I will stick with DETH though, but I sometimes like to mess around with other editors, just so I know what Im missing.

Huh? Elaborate please. Is this some kind of random level generator? I've never seen one that did architecture, especially good stuff. It would be insanely difficult to program. Where do I get it to try???

If I actually get round to making my planned updates to my web pages this week I will put SLIGE on the doom pages, I cant remember where I found it, probably ftp.cdrom.com.
It uses simple architecture, lots of lifts, no fancy details, but ideal if you are prepared to use a real editor to tart up the wads it produces.

Cool. I'll have to try that. Maybe there should be a Legacy version that does 3D floors. Methink 'twould be a royal pain in the arse to program.

Slige can be found here (http://www.doomworld.com/slige). And you'll need a copy of BSP (http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/doombsp/bsp50.zip) to build the wad then.
