About using an editer like WinTex, Deepsea, waded ....

The simplest way to begin creating your own textures is to use existing textures (e.g. DooM's own textures) and add something to make them different. For example, you can start with something like the Metal texture and add sections of the Lite2 texture in the middle.

You'll first need to extract the DooM textures (use WinTex or DeePSea), known as patches, and save them as bitmaps. Then you can use a graphics editor such as PhotoShop, PaintShop Pro, or even MS Paint to insert, delete, modify, etc. your graphic. Remember to use the 256 color palette that the original DooM images were in. Then save the image as a bitmap and re-insert it into your wad as a patch using WinTex, DeePSea, etc. Use those utilities to create/replace a texture from your patch.
