View Full Version : Visiplane Overflow, Need I Worry?

I didn't expect to come across this problem so soon in to editing. While doing just the first part of a wad I've already encountered this phenomenon. What confuses me is whether I should continue on hoping things will work out or come up with new layout.

The reason I'm even considering moving on as it is now is that the problem is sort of intermittent. If I test the map using Warun in Wadauthor it will crash but under Doom 95 I have no problem.

Now that ive thought about it a little bit more I probably have to redo things (again) considering I want to go with a view of a huge expanse of boxes just when entering the main room. That alone can easily consume 256 textures even without the ceiling design.

Well, I went a little off subject there so to show what I'm working with download what I have so far here (http://bluescreenwunder.tripod.com/wherehouse01redo.wad), the download probably won't work but its worth a try. Basically what I'm asking is can I keep the ceiling design I already have using just a simple doom port and have the great view when entering. Any help or tricks for over coming the visiplane problem would be really what I'm looking for.

You could just use a source port like Legacy, Boom or ZDoom. There's no visplane limits in those. Fixing visplane overflows always involves major editing. Deleting linedefs, sectors, adding walls to block certain views etc. If you are happy with what you have now, then that's what I would do. Eliminating the visplane overflow would involve compromise.

Thanks Stphrz for your help. I've decided to make the roof design less complex and keep slogging on.

This is one of those things where only experience would reveal the answer. So I have to go out and that the chances and make the mistakes that build that experience.

If this topic is still around by the time I finish the main room I'll try to update with what happened. I like to know how other peoples problems turnout so I should show the respect back.

My guess is that you're trying to make your map work with the original game, am I right?

If not, why not just grab a source port like Stphrz said? You could go nuts with detail. http://forums.newdoom.com/ubb/smile.gif
