View Full Version : What's the best Doom2 editing program?

I used to own WADED which came with some Alchemy game or something, but I had sold that years ago. Now that I'm about to get Doom 2 back, I need to know if I should download WADED off this site? Or is there a better tool that doesn't take a rocket scientist to learn how to use?

Also, what's the best graphics program? Back when I created Doom levels, I NEVER did anything to manipulate or create my own sprites or textures. I just used the ones from Doom 2. Now I'm very interrested in creating my own weapons, enemies, and textures, but I need to know what an easy tool to use that for is.

Thanks

Well the only version of WADED you can get off the net now is a crap version compared to the one off the CD. You'd be better off learning how to use one of the new DEU-style editors (add a box, stick it to something, add a box, stick it to something, open mouth, insert gun). If I didn't have WADED1.88 I'd just quit DOOM.

For graphics I use MGI Photosuite and Corel Photopaint to draw the stuff and WINTEX to put new stuff into .WAD files.

I want to make 3D models of my enemies and then take pics of them. Anyone reccomend what I should use to do this?

Hope this helped.

If you don't want to pay, then I use wad authour.

Deepsea is meant to be pretty sorted, but you have to dish out cash for that one

Oh yeah, and this is NOT a cue to start another flame war about editors.

So all off you keep your traps shut and we can all live peacefully ever after. http://forums.newdoom.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

I've only ever used DEU, DDT, DETH, ZETH, Deep '97 and Deepsea, but if WADED is one of those tedious editors where you have to create each vertex, then join them up, try DETH for size (DEU and DDT are like this too, but as far as I know they're even older than WADED).

If you prefer the linedefs being created at the same time as you place the vertexes, there are several editors like this, e.g. Deepsea.

Speaking of which, I highly recommend Deepsea for the following reasons:

1) VERY easy to use, once you've gotten used to it

2) Powerful tools for importing music, graphics, data lumps, etc.

3) Can edit levels for Doom, Doom 2, Heretic, Hexen and Strife

4) Can take advantage of the extended features of source ports such as Boom and ZDoom

However, the shareware version is very limited, and it costs something like $20 to register it.

If you're a control-freak, get DETH. You'll have to do all the work, none of this auto-anything crap. Well, there's some auto allign features, and does merge vertices, but not all of them.

Get BSP for a nodebuilder. Built-ins are crappy. Zennode is good if you have a slower PC.

I use NewWadTool (6 year old version) for graphics and other sounds/stuff. It's so easy, even a Doomworld regular can use it! http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/biggrin.gif

Enough crap, those are my choices. Love them, hate them, there my choices.

Monkey... is this like that time that you told me that you had invented a coding engine that allowed you to code c++ via the medium of paintbrush??
