Wintex 3.4 includes a program that will convert a midi file into a mus file.

Wintex 3.4 has an extensive help file. Believe me. It will not be difficult to learn.

Midi is a standard format, which was actually created back in the late '70s. .Mus is a format that id created specifically for DooM.

Its a bit of a messy situation actually.. ID licenced the .mus technology which isn't present in the sourcecode and therefore in the ports, instead ports have similar code to mus2midi that automatically convert the music into midi format for output.

Is that why the music in DeiM doesn't work properly?

I just use midi2mus.exe to do that, and DETH to put it into a PWAD.

I have no trouble putting music into my wads with Wintex 3.4. The problem is that Legacy will not play them properly. The most common problem is that the music will not start until five minutes or so into the level. I have also had certain groups of instruments not play--or worse, play several bars out of time from the other instruments, to unpleasent effect.
These midi file play without any trouble when I use plain old mundane DooM, but not not in Legacy.

Some .mus files don't play good. If you're editing for legacy just put in the midi file,w/o conversion.Legacy supports it.
