From this picture you can see that I have.. umm.. let's say roofless towers.
How can I put little roofs on them?
P.S. This is my first wad, and I am using WadAuthor.

Simply set the ceiling of your caged sectors equal to their floor height plus the height of the grate texture (128), then assign a flat to each ceiling and add textures to the uppers.
If you feel that your ceiling is too much of a giant block, you can make it appear smaller by creating a thin sector around it, and assigining f_sky to the thin sector's ceiling. This will block out the upper portion of your caged sector with sky. Here is a crappy diagram to help you:
http://www.geocities.com/epidermus_emporium/extra/diagram.gif
(Note: This diagram is a side view, not a map view.)
From some angles the sky may also block out parts of the high walls around your courtyard, but it should be within acceptabilty. I hope this helps you with your problem.

okay... this is what I got..
which I don't really like..
I didn't understand the "thin sector" bit of your reply.. can you explain it in a better way?
(thanks for doing a drawing too, but it didn't help me much because.. umm.. it wasn't done from an editors perpestive ie: what it would look like in WadAuthor)

You will have to lower your sky :) The roof over each tower should only be about 32 units lower than the sky sector. Either that, or raise the floors of your towers up substantially.

ahh...
I can't lower the sky!
(I need it that high)
is there no other way???

You lowered the ceiling okay, but you forgot to construct the thin sky sector around it.
Your caged sectors are basically circular in map view. Am I right? Around each of these sectors, you need to construct a thin, ring-shaped sector, with a ceiling height only slightly higher than the height of the caged sector (i.e. eight units higher). This sector would need to have f_sky on its ceiling, which will flood its ceiling and its upper texture with sky. That will hide those huge blocks you currently have, and give the impression of a thin, flat ceiling on top of each cage.
If you are still stuck, I will try to mimic your level in the next day or two, so I can show you what you should end up with.

Raise the floors of your towers then, like I said. If that's not acceptable, well, heh, then you've done something we have all done. Edited yourself into a corner! Towers should be high anyway. Try it it may look ok! Boingo, your solution will cause problems. The area behind the towers will appear to have big ugly gaps in it. It's usually not a good idea to have adjacent sky sectors with radically different ceiling heights.

Awww nuts!
I don't understand this "thin sector" idea.. how can a sector be thin???
I WOULD make the floor higher, but it would still look lame going all the way up to the sky..
I guess I'm screwed
*2 mintues later*
Actually Boingo, I think I know what you're talking about... I'll try her out..

Here it is. This is a resonable faximile if your level with the sky sectors added. You will notice that the cages appear to have a small, flat roofs on them.
http://www.geocities.com/epidermus_emporium/extra/reconst.gif
You will also notice the problem I mentioned earlier. The sky above the cages also blocks out a bit of the high walls surrounding the courtyard. This can be minimized by adjusting the heights of the cages and/or the heights of the walls.
If you want me to send you the .wad file, just ask.

Alright Boingo, I'd love to see that wad, even though Doom_Dude already sent me one. Yours seems to look like my wad more, and, (not to sound like a wad **** ), but the more wads the better.

Of course, if you like the height of the towers as-is, then use an engine like EDGE, which supports multi-story effects.
RORDooM is another one, and Legacy supports that too, I think.

I have made walls that spontaneously disappear (This is a good trick for shattering glass, as the glass acts as a barrier until it is broken.), and levels that physically change depending on the skill level. Unfortunately, I am unable to show you any of these things, because I have only used them in tester form, and do not yet have any finished levels with these features. http://www.newdoom.com/ubb/frown.gif
I have also simulated room over room (catwalks/bridges) using the normal DooM engine. I created a raised bridge for a DeiM tester level that has collapsing sections. Sadly, the collapsing sections will likely never appear in DeiM, because Legacy's look up/down feature reveals the trick, making it useless. Darn.
The DeiM section of my homepage has a screenshot of a 3D police barrier I created for DeiM. It also shows the tester bridge I mentioned above.
