I was just wondering where I could find any tutorials on getting the most outta Wintex as far as Textures go. The help file is sorta vague and I find myself going in circles.
Thanx to derek for giving me info on replacing textures, but any additional info would be a great help in getting this texture stuff figured out.
Also, anyone interested in writing a tutorial on making textures and getting them into a wad, please contact me. Good Doom editing tutorials are needed and I'm lookin' to start fixing up the editing section of my site.

I belive Boingo is working on a complete set of editing tutorials. I have no clue if he is actually working on it, though :P

"I quickly jumped onto the other side of the fence, assuming there limited ability to make a vertical incline would save the day. I was wrong. It seems that, just as my confidence grew that I was saved, the midgets had me bested. Wings they grew, and what wings they were. There shirts ripped, and wings erected from there backs. Now there were 20 bald winged midgets that must have each had a 7 foot wingspan. I certainly ran, hoping that they could not fly faster than my sprint, but yet again I was proven wrong. The scalps glistened as they flapped faster and faster, gaining on me every second. My heart raced, and I began to feel weary. I was surly tiring, and I was going to be there furry feast. I pushed on for another 60 feet, fell to my knees, and passed out."

I have a few new 3d tricks that run on doom2.exe. They are not on the doomworld editing pages. If I ever get around to making tutorials for them you can put them up your site.
Adding textures with wintex is easy, here is the fastest way to add textures:
Click on the patches button
press alt then E then L. I dialog box will apear. Type the name that you want your 'patch' to be called. The next window is for telling wintex where your 'patch' is.
press alt then A then T. This will bring up a window for editing the textures lump.
press alt then T then N. Type the name you want for your 'texture'.
Now you have a 128X128 blue square. Use the slide bars to set your textures width and height. Find your patch in the list to the right. Click on your patch then click in the blue square. Your patch should apear in the blue square but mis aligned. Use the arrow buttons you align your patch. Then quit that form. It will ask you if you want to save the textures, click yes. Then go to file (or whatever the first menu on the right is called) and choose save and quit. You never want to leave a wad open in wintex if you are to use another program to access that wad. For adding flats you just insert them the same way as patches. Some map editors wont recognize new flats, just type in the flat name and it will work fine when you run the wad.
I was stoned as **** when i wrote this BTW

Sorry. I am not working on a complete set of Wintex tutorials. The tutorials I am writing only deal specifically with skins. (Note: I was suposed to have them done last weekend, but I had assignments to work on. They should be really this weekend for sure.)
If you are having trouble creating textures, may I suggest using Wintex 3.4 instead. First you create your patches and save them to Wintex 3.4's pathes subdirectory. Then in Wintex 3.4, select Edit then texture1 from the menu bar. There you can build your textures using the patches you created. They appear in the Redefined patches window. You can then set the offsets for the patches and arrange them. You must save each texture when you are finished building it, and you must save the file (texture1) before you exit back to the main screen.
Unlike wintex 4.x, Wintex 3.4 does not work on the .wad file itself. You will have to ask Wintex 3.4 to build the pwad for you when you have finished making your changes.
This is all I am going to tell you for now. Wintex 3.4 has an extensive help file to show you what to do. In fact, I learned how to use Wintex 3.4 entirely from the help file, and I don't think you will have much trouble in figuring things out. If you are still having troubles, please let me know.

P.S. In case you don't know, you can find Wintex 3.4 in the tools section of the Epidermis Emporium site.
I would also like to point out, that if given my choice of using either of the two versions, I actually prefer to work with Wintex 3.4 instead of Wintex 4.x. I find that there are several more things that I am able to do with it. On the other hand, there are a number of things that Wintex 4.2 can do that Wintex 3.4 can't. I always keep both versions ready on my drive for when I need them. http://www.newdoom.com/ubb/smile.gif

Thanx Monkey, Toke and Boingo for all the good recon info. If you think of anything else, then post it here....obviously.
Hey Toke, if you ever get to writing up a tutorial on texture editing, I'll put it on my site.

I recommend automating the texture creation procedure. 99% of textures I create at least are composed only of a single patch- and so although I've never used it, when/if I get back to texture making I'd use a utility such as Tarin's p2t (patch to texture) which converts specified patches into textures. I'd also use some batch program to auto insert the required files too to make it quicker. Tarin's page is at http://www.doomhq.com/tarin/ or somewhere linked from there, I think.

Good, I grabbed that p2t file. Thanx Jon.
