Well, good to know you're better. I just had a nice time with Cute. I can't believe how cute Cute is. It's all good. Too bad she's going to Germany for 3 weeks.
Great to hear you're mapping too. I want to make a Legacy map. I've tried 7 editors and either they won't do it or they crash like crazy. I think it's time to get DeePsea. I have a few neat FS ideas although most of my gameplay would be vanilla style (I want atmosphere mostly).

Well, I did some mapping of a sort. I seem to have taught myself the basics of DeePsea's complexities. The FS editor always makes my levels crash though. I think I'll just do my FS the old fashioned way for now since it seems to work. I also made some Legacy things like 3D floors. Now I need some really good design ideas. For what I want there's going to be a bit of texture work on my part too. I hate doing those bits but I don't like the current water textures and there are some textures/flats that just don't exist when they should.

I would do FS last too but I wanted to see if it worked. I was just making a test map that looked like shit.
I'm trying to make a relatively small deathmatch level. I forgot how hard it is to design stuff. I'm trying to build this map with a computer theme but the texture sets in DooM II just suck. I'm also not used to making maps for DooM anymore (no 3D mode). I'm starting to get the hang of it again though. We'll see what I'll make.

Yeah, some of the textures are useless, and what's with AASHITTY???
It's hard to find stuff to make door and window frames. There no nice metal grates or vent panels. There aren't enough TEKWALL patches to make a good theme out of it and no matching floors for it (only for the COMP ones). There are also no narrow platform textures.

Doom_Dude, Don't strain the brain, give yourself a chance to play hookie from editing. Vilecore 2 can wait a day or two. If you try to hard one of two things could happen.
1.) The quality could drop like the coyote
in a roadrunner catooon.
2.) You get so tired and/or frustrated that
you stop working on the whole project.
Remember you are doing by yourself what typically takes a team.
BTW, I like your Avatar & Sig pic.

I always edit a lot during a period of time and then chill out for a month. It always goes up and down with me. Now that I'm in the groove all I want is to map and make stuff. Don't worry though, I do take breaks during my editing frenzy's. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/wink.gif

Yeah, jDoom is kewl, but there some problems with it tho.
1) It can't do sector over sector, not till Doomsday 2.oh my God.
2) High requirements, Sure does stress my voodoo 3.
3) It's eye candy is so sweet It makes the other ports leave a bad taste in my mouth.

Yeah and I hope it gets the 3D floors!!!!!
One thing I noticed..... In Legacy OpenGL I get a lot of 'sparkles' where a light colored sky will show through the walls in the form of tiny dots in corners and other areas. I find it very annoying to see these spots here and there on the walls as I move around. Run the same wad in Doomsday and you don't see any of that shit.

What's up with all those offset values for the skies? JDoom is confusing.
I think that "sparkly" bug is a symptom of the way Legacy has been developed. It's open source and many of the additions and bug fixes have simply been patches added to the existing code. In fact, most of it is that way I think. That's something they really should fix though (actually, I don't understand how it can even happen). JDoom on the other hand is a near complete rewrite in many areas. That, and it's all done by one guy so he can coordinate all the stuff with himself.

I must admit that I copied jDoom's Maps.ded
& changed level name & author.
I did try to leave the other stuff out but I got the HOM effect where the sky should be.
So you aggree with John Carmack. "He believes that the best way to make games is to have just one programmer working on them, with one clear vision." PCGamer said.

Yeah the sparkly effect sucks.
Hey thanx Deathgiver! That is very cool (just tried it out). Gonna play around with that a bit. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/biggrin.gif

Your welcome Doom_Dude. I figured you'd like seeing the name of your level come up as opposed to the levels they replace as well as having your name proudly listed.
And have fun. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smilies/cwm7.gif
I was wondering about one thing tho, Doom_Dude.
Did I have the skies right?

Sounds like Carmack is saying "I don't want to let other programmers fuck with my stuff." http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/wink.gif Having a team is good as long as it is small and communicates well. Looking at Carmack, I'm rather surprised he knows how to communicate with humans at all.
Legacy needs some big-time engine tweaks to make it faster, and less buggy. It's a wonderful port, but they should stop for a while and fix all those annoying little bugs. Here's a few:
- sparkly effect
- coronas/dynlights go out at some angles (easy fix)
- all manner of little FS bugs
- Some of the weird issues caused by GL fog (eg. outlines around edges of texture transparencies)
- the demo bug with coop monsters not appearing
- better volume controls
- get existing features more consistent betwen hardware and software modes
Then they should work on stuff like new netcode (actually, that would be good now too), hi-res textures, models, FS addons, etc.

I'm not totally sure about the skys Deathgiver and I didn't look at all the maps. I'm not sure in what maps the skys change from RSKY1 to RSKY2 and whatnot. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/wink.gif
Also in Legacy the GL lights bleed through adjacent sectors if the walls are close. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/tongue.gif

Well DD, that light bleeding bug is actually next to impossible to fix without either using static lightmaps (like Quake/HL) or using stencil shadows. It may be partially fixed in new maps if they add a feature to define areas that lights can't shine on. I"m sure you can see the potential problems that creates though. There really isn't a complete solution to it for Legacy. That said, the engine can probably be tweaked to reduce it quite a bit. In fact, it already has a bit since 1.32 beta2 or something.
In the mean time, the sparkly bug could be helped a bit by changing the default void graphic to plain blackness instead of the sky texture assigned to the current level.
There was another annoying bug I had in mind but I can't think of it now. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smilies/cwm3.gif

That's why I made that dark, greyscale sky in my Heretic map. The sparkles are still there I'm sure, you just can't see em.
As far as the bleed thing goes moving lights sometimes helps. JDoom has it as well but it's not as noticable... http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/wink.gif

Aliens vs. Predator had them. I have the "Gold" version and all the lights bleed. It's good too because all the lights are dynamic and if they didn't bleed the levels would be bloody dark. It's not very noticable at all in that engine though. You can also see the sparkles in that game. They always seem to appear at seems between brushes in corridors and stuff. It's a great game once you get over the burning eyes and crappy save-game implementation though.
Now that I think about it, Legacy's GL support is crap. Everything is sort of half done looking. If you don't put a sky in your map the holes are even worse because they'll show up as HOM. They said they fixed the HOM but they didn't. That and the decals still sit in mid-air. And it's still the only port I ever play! http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/wink.gif

I love Legacy because it's just about the only port that can add piles of fun new stuff and actually feel like DooM. That's why they're putting priority on the netcode even over all those other bugs. They need to get back that goold old DooM DM feel. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/biggrin.gif

I have as of yet to play a good game of DM in Legacy. It always craps out or Lags. Last time it was so laggy I could only look around and I was glued to the same spot for minutes. LOL.

Yeah, that was pretty much the case when I last played a net game with someone in Legacy. The server was fine but the client would always lag like crazy. I've played on a LAN and that was fun though. Last time I played split-screen with my brother it ran pretty well too. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smile.gif
