Hello all. I'm new to these forums so I'm goin around getting aqanted. I was just wondering what the current status is of Vilecore 2.0? From what I've heard it looks like its going to be a great megawad when its completed. Keep up the good work Doom_Dude.

I think Vilecore 2.0 is coming along nicely. Doom_Dude has been doing lots of new textures and that's taking some time (they look awesome). I went through the game and reported bugs to him so he's got those. His architecture has been changed a lot in the early maps so that takes a while. I think it's one of those projects that's going to be released "when it's done" like id likes to do. Hope that helps. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smile.gif

Welcome to the forums The Doomer. Hey thanx for the interest in my project. I would guess that Vilecore2.0 is about 25% done. It's really hard to judge though at this point. Like Aliotroph? said, it'll be done when it gets done. The last time I set a deadline I was way off by months. A lot of the original maps are changed to the point that they look almost completely different from Version 1, which is due to the completely new textures and the large amount of architectural changes and additions. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/wink.gif
There was a lot of blandness in the first version which I really didn't notice due to being such a newbie in the editing department....seriously. Now when I walk through the original Vilecore I see so much that is missing. Funny you don't notice that kinda stuff till later. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/wink.gif

Welcome to the Forums The Doomer it's nice to to meet someone new.
Doom_Dude, you're a newbie when you made Vilecore? I thought you've done maps for years when you did it.
Makes me respect you all the more for taking on such a huge project and doing it so well.

Hehe, what's a furum? http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smilies/cwm32.gif
When I first played DooM I didn't notice that half the textures weren't aligned.

Thank you. I wanted to start mapping after playing Quake and DooM and other games I can't remember, but didn't have a clue how to get started. I wasn't online at the time and so had no way of getting ahold of an editor for DooM or Quake or whatever. One day I was walking out of a Staples (now called business depot of all things) store and saw a bargain bin full of books. I found The DooM Hackers Guide that came with a CD full of doom editing stuff. I finally got what I wanted.... a good editor and a very useful resource. So the very first map I worked on during my first editing experience, grew into map01: The Evil Zone, the first map of what would become Vilecore (this was around May 99). I still wasn't online at the time and so I started to build more maps and didn't realise I would actually go so far as to make a 32 DooM megawad. When I did finally get online (by trying out a free ISP service) I had around 10 maps done and shortly after I found Newdoom.com during a search for info on doom editing and such. So ya, I didn't edit anything till May 99 when I was a real Noob. I didn't work very steady on Vilecore after the first 12 maps got finished because the newness of it wore off and I started to mess with Half-Life mapping and hanging around the HL editing forums. So I swung back and forth between H-L, DooM II a lot until finally I somehow finished my 32 maps for DooM II. Okay I shut up now. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/wink.gif

How'd you become a mod here then?

I was in the forums all the time and after I talked to Phoebus in email about some 'things' he asked if I wanted to be a moderator.
Yeah I started late in editing. I wanted to edit for ages beforehand but didn't have the tools.

I just had a sweet idea for a Legacy mod. I should do a sort of techno theme. Make it dark and scary like Alien, but keep the DooM gameplay. Lots of fs and fancy effects but only for environmental things like sounds and lights. And it should have a dark techno track in the background.

I have to wait until I'm done this web page thing I'm doing since that needs to get done. I want to plan out this DooM thing if I make it because that always helps editing. I should know where I want things to be and such. I'll also have to learn lots of those kewl Legacy tricks Rellik and Ebola invented.

Some of the design will involve kewl tricks like 3D floors as an integral part of the map (it was part of my strange vision). I want to use Legacy's stuff to create a scary atmosphere though and that needs to have the features more unified than they are. I thought I would use a fair amount of Dehacked and FS too. Rellik's and Ebola's tricks are so sweet. I don't plan to make anything as scripted or as taxing on hardware as Phobia though. I'll keep the design simpler, but hopefully really kewl.

Well, some of the best things in Legacy still need tweaking before I can finish that. The fog is very buggy and I want that vertical lighting feature (which I don't think I've ever seen in a real wad). The lighting is a big thing. I figure lots of well-placed coronas and fog in a dark level would be really awesome.
I need some layout ideas now though. Time to get thinking.

What I was speaking of may happen in some form. My other map is stalled now cause I'm too lazy and I need the next beta (assuming Hurdler makes it do what he says it will do).
Wouldn't be such an issue if I could run Dehacked. I suppose I could get someone to send me the patch I need... Hmmm, maybe that's a better plan. I'm sure Rellik will do it for me. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smile.gif

I just had a great idea for improving the lighting in DooM drastically without rewriting the whole engine or adding fancy dynamic lights. I'm still trying to figure out bits of it though. It would mostly benefit outside areas.

No, it's an engine-modification jobby but independent of that fancy GL stuff. The amount of work it would require would depend on how certain parts of the rendering code are organized and constructed. Too bad I don't have the skills to do it myself.
