Hey D_D, my best friend and his brother always make fun of your site's name. I keep trying to explain to them that a megawad is simply a wad with lots of maps. Of course, you have to wonder about wad files anyway. They could have used a name less likely to be made fun of.

I still comment most of my variables and methods. Or I at least give them obvious names. I knew a guy in high school who wanted me to help him debug this program he made in VB. The problem was he didn't understand variables so he stored everything in textboxes. The program was an interest calculator with a spreadsheet thing. It was a pain in the ass to fix. Not only that, but he couldn't be arsed with for loops so he used recursion to fill the grid (which I had to fix cause it didn't work).

When I look at other people's comments I often just get more confused...It's nice to just go through the entire code and figure it out for yourself.

Carmack probably has to comment everything before he sells the technology to other companies. Poor guy.

I don't know about that. I looked at the DooM sources I got from their site and there are very few comments. I tried to understand some of the AI code. It was bloody confusing and all of his comments were little notes to himself. There seemed to be a lot of "let's pick a random direction to go in now..."

I used to spend a lot of time observing demon behavior in the game. It helps to look at the automap with IDDT x2. Demons tend to "bounce" when they hit walls, sort of. Hehe. But I don't know any of the AI code itself.

Yeah, I can barely understand the AI code for way simpler games. Wolf3D's original AI is probably really easy to learn. The guys just walk at you and aim. Games like Half-Life use this info-node things to help the guys navigate architecture. I sort of understand that but I can't code it.

I remember QUake 2 advertising some good AI...like the dudes duck when you shoot at them.

Turned out they duck for a few seconds even if your rapidly throwing bullet after bullet with your chaingun. Then they stand up and get whammed. LOL.

In my experience, there is no such thing as good AI. It's artificial intelligence. I.e., it's not really intelligent. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smile.gif And it never will be until you're able to emulate a fully-functioning human mind and that'll take one hell of a good microprocessor.

In the context of a game like Quake II the full human mind shouldn't need to be emulated for it to act intelligent. In fact, a pretty decent job could be done in a fairly normal fashion I think, but it would be a lot of code and take a long time to write. All people really care about is graphics anyway. I don't think Carmack really gives a rat's ass about AI so until someone else does it, id's games will suck in that department.

I think the graphics in games are starting to go a bit overboard. I'm quite happy with the way games like Half-Life, RTCW, Fakk2, Undying, look. Why do we need anything better in the graphics department to be fun and entertaining and kewl to look at? How far will they go? Will it come to the point where the graphics are movie quality with real world cause and effects? I kinda hope not but I guess that's where were all heading.

Heh, who knows. I'm sure that editor jobby with the game shouldn't be a problem. Other games have done that. TA: Kingdoms came with one. So did Duke, Warcraft II and Starcraft.

Lots of people say stuff sucks and I end up liking it. I read some Fakk2 reviews that said the game was junk and heard other people say it was sucky, yet I thought it was pretty kewl. No it wasn't. Their platoon got stuck and I can't remember why. The ship thought they were all dead and almost didn't pick them up. I can't remember how they got found. One of the soldiers stole the sugar pack from a restaurant on the planet a few hours before.

I just watched a cool one where some Ferengi raided the Enterprise and Archer, Trip and T'Pol had to stop them. The whole thing was fucking funny. Especially the part where they had the Ferengi fooled. Trip was offering to show them the vault (which doesn't exist) and Archer was threatening to kill him. Trip said he wanted to protect his wife Hoshi (who's not his wife). Archer said she was only worth six bars of gold and he'd give Trip ten to let the Ferengi have her.
