The Rife Hive

Today I was playing Vilecore and I remembered how you (and all of us) hated the look of The Rife Hive. Earlier I grabbed that map and started playing with it in DeePsea. Some rooms are a bitch (like the first one) but I got lots of it looking much more interesting. The main idea I had was to make most of it pretty damn dark and use all those lamps to do the work. Some of the textures got replaced (and aligned on the curves thanks to DeePsea). I've been throwing in more details and stuff without changing the gameplay (which is pretty damn good) and it's looking neat.

I don't plan on distributing this or anything. I just thought you ought to know that map ain't worthless and it's really a lot of fun to play. Damn, I've been so tempted to throw in some 3D lighting and stuff... http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smilies/cwm35.gif

I'm not sure what I'll do with it when I get that far in Vile II. I might either toally replace it, rebuild it from scratch or just fix it up.

Exactly why I'm making all new textures and I'm very sick of seeing even the old textures that are good. When you look at the best DooM textures all you see is brown, grey and silver...

That's because most of the palette is brown, grey and silver. YOu wouldn't know it though looking at Mystic's new maps.

Yes, but the brown, grey and silver come in greater ranges making it easier to texture with them.

Also, some of the colours like white have a habit of repeating, which is kinda sad.

I'm turning into Mystic. I have 3 things going on with mapping at the same time now. There are a couple rooms I don't know what to do with at all. In lots of the levels I've been changing the ceilings because messing with the floors would goof the gameplay. The big round rooms (like the one with the red key) are hard to change. I turned the pipes to TEKWALL6 and aligned it all and that looks better. The ceilings need something though. The room with the big skylight also needs a bunch of work, along with most of the areas by the yellow key.
