Just started to make a new DM map a few hours ago. It's not going to be very big but will feature some new textures and a an altered version of the red Doom torch. It should be done on Saturday or Sunday methinks. All I have is one room made and now I gotta think up what else I want in this map. Other than that I'm saying nuttin' cept that I have a name already. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/biggrin.gif

I'm tempted to work on that ZenNode jobby. I'm at a sticky part though and I'm half asleep.

I'm stuck on level 4 of Quake II. I lowered some bridge in the mine and I'm supposed to access it.

If you have the map sketched out it can be built a lot faster.

Sketching out a map or a complex room is always a good idea. I don't always do it though. I think I should've this time around.

*Pops back into editor*

Shit I need to fix that texture. :/

Tommorrow night should be a release day I hope. I'm still messing with the little things. The map itself is done as far as the layout goes. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/biggrin.gif

I'm wondering if I should leave the rocket launcher and the Plasma gun out? (definitely no bfg bs). Its a smallish map and I was thinking maybe just the shotguns and chaingun would be good enough. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/wink.gif

Planning does help a lot if you can actually bring yourself to do it.

When I say small map I mean about half the size of Templecore....maybe a little less than. I'm leaving the rocket launcher and plasma gun out. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/biggrin.gif

What the hell is with legacy multiplayer? I ran Lavapitt in Legacy SP mode for testing purposes. Now the map is complete and Legacy won't run it in Multiplayer mode. I keep getting 'a wad file was not found' error then it boots the first map in DooM II. I used to get that before. Fuck! So anyhow I booted up my Zdaemon server and jumped in my map with ZDoom and it works fine. So what the hell is up with Legacy? :/

I asked this question in the Legacy forum last month. http://forums.newdoom.com/postdisplay.cgi?forum=Forum9&topic=001544
Its a bug in the multiplayer launcher.
Apparently if you use map mapname from the console to load your level it works.

Doom_Dude
April 29th, 2002, 03:50 PM
Cheers Big_al!! I was thinking there was a Legacy file missing or something wacky going on. I hope they fix that danged bug soon as it's not very fun to type in all that shit in the console. :/

If you're using a wad with texture, flat, music etc. replacement you can run the game with "Single Map" using your file(s) and then use Legacy's ingame multiplayer to get things going.

I use a similar solution. I put the old -file parameter into the multiplayer options in the launcher. It works quite nicely and avoids the console step.

I played Spacewar. It's ten years older than Pong. You have to try and kill the other spaceship (player 2) by flying your ship around and shooting him (as he does the same). The trick is there's a big star in the middle that exerts gravity on your ships and their missiles. You have to keep from falling out of orbit. The physics are very realistic. It was written in 1962 by some MIT grads. That game is bloody hard to play.

You never heard of it because it was written for the PDP-1 mini-computer. Those machines were massively expensive and only big universities had them. All the university comp-sci people knew about that game. That link Pickle-Hammer posted about the histor of Pong had a lot of info on it. Some guy tried to market Spacewar in '66 as an arcade machine called 'Computer Space' but it never sold, likely because the game was too complex to just learn by looking at it.

Ever hear of a Genises game called Hard Drivin? That is spelt corectly too. Its 3d and made in 1987. Ran at about 10 frames a second, had no textures, and there was this little cow, that if you hit, it went "moo". It was such a cool game. You could even go through loopdy-loops and jump over crud.

That was the year of the arcade version, Genesis wasn't out until '89.

I played it in the arcade a lot, it was a precursor to games like San Francisco Rush and stuff like that.

Ahh, said 87 on box so I thought that is when it came out. Wonder if the graphics were any better in arcades... Oh, One time I beat the Phantom Photon (or Pantom Futon as I like to call him). I always used to crash though the cones during his race and cheat to win, but one day I said NO! I'm gonna do it right. And I did all those loops the good way. And I won. Such a great game...
