Yeah, you're right. I'm sitting on the floor now with a laptop typing this and listening to random XG midis from the net. It's tricky finding good MIDI composers, but sometimes you find kick-ass stuff (and my MIDI proggies are taking up most of my CPU resources but that's okay).

Yamaha somehow has the best technology and they have for years. You can get way better stuff than even the one I have. Mine's a few years old now.

The controls aren't that great, but what the heck, it was the first game of its kind. (True 3d that is.)

Single player was also okay--spooky a little bit. Too dark to see well.....and I didn't know there was music the first time I played it...

Quake 2 was fun, though. The deathmatch ruled just like Q1 and its single player value wasn't too bad. Right now my brother and I are playing a coop game through the whole thing...it's much slower since Greg can't control his player if his life depended on it. Which it does.

No it wasn't. It was just the first to sell and become ridiculously popular. Parallax had Descent in 1995 and that was true 3D. A small company called Bethesda had an engine in 1994-95 that could do true 3D. They made games like Daggerfall (a 3D RPG which never caught on). It was revolutionary in that it had a map twice the size of Great Britain. They also made Terminator: Future Shock (which I have and for some reason was blown off as a DooM clone by most people). It had models and everything too as well as primative dynamic lights. Unfortunately their engine was really buggy and crashed a lot for no reason (I'm guessing memory leaks though).

Then there are always those games from even before. I remember a polygon game called Continuum from 1990 where you had this little ship that had to navigate through cubic rooms via jump pads and such; it was hard. Then there's this game called Jet I have for my IBM XT (c. 1985). A CGA flight sim with amazing complexity. All the bases and ships (and your own plane) are rendered in coloured polygons. The other planes are done as wire-frames though.

Okay, I'm done for now. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smile.gif

Zack
March 25th, 2002, 09:31 PM
That's somewhat true. There were also all the Flight Simulators and also the older Alone in the Dark games.

But they were just polygons...no colors or gradient shading. Quake featured everything textured!

Yeah, and because I have no friggin' idea where the Hell my Terminator: Future Shock CD went. Although I can point out that most people have played Descent or at least seen it. It came out in 1995 and was true 3D. That was one of their sales pitches in fact. They even had some nice shading on the lighting. Their game design however, wasn't that good. They also got lazy and made all their doors 2D things that just blocked tunels.

Both Descent and Future Shock had 3D automaps though. Descent's was wireframe and Future Shock's was lighted and textured. It had all these camera controls.

In Rune (3rd person jobby) your a Viking warrior on a quest for vengeance (typical) and its based on the Unreal Tournament engine so it looks real nice with nice touches in huge caverns and tall trees covered in snow and massive underground lava flows. The levels are neat and the textures are awesome. Some of the monsters are hard to fight but you get some kewl weapons like double bladed axes and roman longswords which you can power up with runes that you find. There is a lot of climbing / jumping type of puzzles which can be annoying...especially this rediculous 'get on the windmill blade to ride up to that window' kind of BS. I kept falling off / getting crushed for awhile before I decided to save it on the blade and viola I made it through. Otherwise the game is pretty fun and the graphics are kewl. I like fighting these huge 4 legged cat-like beasts in the snowy mountain passes / caves. Its not a ground breaking game or anything but thats ok with me.
