Aliotroph? Wads

Hey Aliotroph? I just played your base_1.wad

1) The beginning was kewl with the walls opening up.
2) I liked the bit with the boxes opening up, with the lost souls inside.
3) The secret behind the teleporter was neat. Old trick but still good. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/wink.gif
4) The ramp in the sewer slime wouldn't raise for me until I tried it a few times. Maybe the first I wasn't right over the switch when I jumped in.
5) In legacy I could see the entire front of the lift showing through the sky from the slime pit.

Ok just finished Blood. Its pretty good too. The architecture is pretty good and with some work it could be a real fun wad. Yeah I think you should do more editing or at least refine these two. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/biggrin.gif

Overall Base_1 is the more fun to play wad with a good layout methinks and Blood is the better looking map. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/wink.gif

Cool. Thanks. Blood was far better looking. That's probably because the theme was more thought-out beforehand. Base_1 had a whole pile of tricks in it that were partially based on things I had seen in DooM. As for them being old, that's because those wads are old. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/wink.gif

I'm tempted to do some refinements on those wads. I'd be more interested in making Blook flow a bit better. Base_1 will alway have serious problems in Legacy cause of that elevator unless I change it. It can't be fixed with better nodes or anything. I think there's a bit of a problem with the trigger for the Lost Souls. I know it worked for you, but it is possible to get by without tripping it and still get the key.

I had another wad in the works after those two. I had planned it on paper again, but parts got redesigned several hundred times and it ended up exceeding the limits of the engine. I have an old copy left but it only has a room and a hallway in it (and two elevators that go nowhere). It might be worth fixing up because the central idea behind it still looks pretty good to me. I won't do any serious editing until the summer though.

Hey Zack, can you tell me how well a modified selection sort will work if I'm trying just assign the values in ascending order to a totally different array? The trick is if there are ties. Something in the back of my head is saying this will screw it up in some cases but I'm not sure and I don't feel like coding it at this time of day.

What exactly is a bubble sort? They wouldn't tell me in my programming course cause they said it sucked too much.

I did eventually devise my own sort (which was kind of neat and customized to the situation.

LOL I've seen people try and write programs like that. The cheapest way to do many things in programming is just to randomly try a solution and check if it's right. If it's not, then do it again. This may sound like it takes forever, but since computers are so fast, certain problems will be solved this way in a split second anyway.

Bubblesorting is swapping data within an array so that it ends up being in order.
It'd be like this:

dim num(99)

'whatever code to give the array Num whatever strings or numbers...

for y = 0 to 98
for x = 0 to 98
if num(x) &gt; num(x + 1) then swap num(x), num(x + 1)
next
next

So if I did this to an array of five integers, for example, it would look like this:

20, 9, 18, 2, 13 (before loop 0)

9, 18, 2, 13, 20 (before loop 1)

9, 2, 13, 18, 20 (before loop 2)

2, 9, 13, 18, 20 (before loop 3)

Everything stays the same after the last two loops since everything is already in order.

I usually write modified selection sorts when I want to sort something. I'd use a merge sort or a quick sort, but I can never remember the damned algorithms. Merge sorts also seem to suck up memory (thank you recursion!), so large collections crash the program.

Still its good to know the theory behind the stuff first.

I had to make my own sort for a VB program I did. It's a bit like a selection sort, but more complex. (There was no swapping, only assignment to another array, so all these checks had to be in to prevent it returning the same value all the time).
