View Full Version : Vilecore: Map32: The Vilcore

Okay. I hit another famous dead-end here, wosrse than that other one (if you're a purist using BooM).

This is in The Vilcore map (MAP32). I get to the end of that long hallway, where there's 2 red doors, and a regular one on the right. Go through, there's a tall room with a lot of torches flickering about. Go farther, there's 2 rooms that mirror each other, with torches in all but 1 recess. It appears as if that one's a door or something. I shot it, nothing. Is that recess the way to continue on? BooM can't jump. http://forums.newdoom.com/ubb/smile.gif
I'll wait for an answer before I continue onward.

I wouldn't be here right now if I didn't hit a dead end in this map. http://forums.newdoom.com/ubb/smile.gif

Yep. Ya gotta jump. I played it using ZDoom. You really should make the switch. ZDoom is so much faster than Legacy or PrBoom with Pentium 2 processors or better it's not even funny. I did a timedemo on my P2 266 ZDoom vs PrBoom on Chris Lutz's PAR demo using similar demos (nomonsters). ZDoom was twice as fast in some spots. PrBoom is faster than Legacy though.

Sorry, but you have to jump into the torchless alcove jobby. Geeeezzzzussss, how come I didn't think about that before? I guess after making 32 DooM maps, you get a little stunned in the brain department........sigh.

Stphrz, to tell ya the truth, I'm totally DooMed out. After finishing 32 maps, I feel DooM depleted or something. I haven't played or edited DooM in weeks and I dunno when I'll get back into it. I have an idea of what I want to do next but I have no ambition to work on it. I've dried up in the Doom department.

There is another way to get in to there but your not going to like it. If you time it right the viles can blast you in to the little opening. You would also have to get blasted back in once you get the key.

I have tryed it with degreelessness and it worked but it took along time. If anybody can pull that off with out cheats it would make beating the Icon of Sin look like e1m1.

I have no choice but to NOCLIP up there, then.
I'd change over, but I'm not doing 16 maps over again! http://forums.newdoom.com/ubb/smile.gif

As for ZDooM, it might be that I have older versions of that and the last original PRBooM, but I noticed in the FUCT test that ZDooM lost speed before PRBooM did, making PRBooM faster, but in the end, they both hit a low of 24FPS (nomonsters), 640x480. In regular maps, ZDooM did hold up in the speed department when higher rez's were used. 800x600 worked well, but 1024x768 lurched some.
I might try the 1.23 beta 11. That's right non P3 users, uh-oh! http://forums.newdoom.com/ubb/eek.gif

I am using a P2 350@391, and it isn't that bad on Legacy or zDoom, still fast.

Why don't you get a Pentium 4 1.5 GHz?

Gee. 2 years ago I got this PC, a pretty fast one around. Now there's PCs out that is more than 1 GHz faster than mine! http://forums.newdoom.com/ubb/smilies/cwm34.gif .

What, you didn't know? Pentium 4 1.3, 1.4 and 1.5 GHz has been out for a month now.

I knew that. I think they finally hit a stop with the surging increasing processor speeds with this 1.5Gz jobby.

Hey Doom_Dude it's really weird that you should mention not wanting to edit any more. It's like all of the editing spirit in you jumped into me.

See, I had this dream a couple nights ago about Doom. Only this wasn't like the usual dreams about Doom, or Quake or Half-Life. I actually dreamt about editing Doom! I was making levels and everything. That's all I remember. But it was an inspiring dream http://forums.newdoom.com/ubb/smile.gif

Your comp would be much faster on ZDoom than Legacy, especially on maps that have a lot of detail. 'Course you need to keep Legacy around for the 3d floors and such.

I setup the key bindings for ZDooM yesterday.

I do like that ZDooM doesn't lurch up close to walls at 640x480 like PRBooM does, even though ZDooM loses momentum in the FUCT test first. Hmm.... Weird.

Now, how about slopes? Wish I could make 'em

Hey Doom_Dude, remember episode 1 of the original Doom? Ya know, some of the best levels ever made (still to this day). All those levels were made cold, on the fly. None of this drawing on grid paper stuph.

Personally I don't see the point really. It's just another step. Why not just draw it out in your editor? It's easier to delete stuff in a computer cad program than to take an eraser to paper no?

Hey Stphrz! That's how I made 95% of Vilecore.....in the editor. The other 5% was done using a plan drawn out on graph paper. I'm gonna make some cool stuph, so stand back and hold onto you Wadauthor jobby http://forums.newdoom.com/ubb/biggrin.gif.

Yo Don, Levelord is a Level designer dude who's working for Ritual Entertainment. His credits are:

Started level designing in February of 1994 and created GrayDOOM, an amateur 4-level pack including The Swamp, Imp Skull, Bad Water, and The Gauntlet. Taken under the wing of Nick Newhard to do contract levels for BLOOD with the Q Studios team and Apogee/3D Realms in September of 1994. Hired full-time by Apogee/3D Realms in March of 1995, came to Dallas, Texas. Designed half of the levels for DUKE NUKEM 3D (The Abyss, Incubator, Warp Factor, Spin Cycle, Lunatic Fringe, Raw Meat, Bank Roll, Flood Zone, L.A. Rumble, The Movie Set, Rabid Transit, Fahrenheit, Hotel Hell, and Tier Drops). Joined the Hipnotic Interactive team in August of 1996 and latest release of Scourge of Armagon includes levels "The Lost Mine", "Research Facility", "The Crypt", "Tur Torment", and "The Edge of Oblivion".

Here's a quote of the Levelord: <BLOCKQUOTE><font size="1" face="Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, serif">quote:</font><hr width="100%" size="1" noshade><font face="Trebuchet MS, Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, serif" size="2"> DOOM - Nothing needs to be said about this one. The combination of this, my favorite game of all time, and the DEU level editor changed my life forever!</font><hr width="100%" size="1" noshade></BLOCKQUOTE>

I love the work he did on the "The Lost Mine" level for Quake's Scourge Of Armagon add-on pack. It was cool.

Oh and I don't really know if he draws his maps up on graphy paper or not, but I'll find out!

You said before that you can't get custom maps to run with Zdoom. If you unzip the Zdoom into your Ultimate Doom directory, and put the wad (test171.wad) into your Ultimate Doom directory you should be able to run it with the following command line:

ZDoom -file test171.wad -warp 4 1 -skill 4.

Yes. Wadauthor does indeed check for missing textures. Actually KR you should keep WA around if only to use it for error checking. It's second to none. It also has a first rate scripting interface. If you are planning on ZDoom editing you will find it invaluable in that regard. What's great about this is you can still use your favorite editor (Deth?) for map layout and stuff like that there. http://forums.newdoom.com/ubb/smilies/cwm35.gif
