View Full Version : Is it possible ?

Here I sit surrounded by all the top games and yet I've become addicted to Doom for the second time !. (first time was when it first came out)
Anyways, Nice one guys - its great to be able to dust down my old games and breathe new life in them. (and they dont even look too bad considering !)
Doom's still as playable as ever.. infact even more so, now I can use the key combo I'm use to.
Couple of questions for ya, but I'm no doom programmer/mod'er so excuse any daft questions.
Is it possible to actually change the res of the original graphics ? - I mean the main world textures look pretty good, but the sky box is rather naff. Would it be possible (by using the Legacy engine) - to load in a larger custom background ??
I understand everything is contained in the original WAD file.. but is there a way to hack it ?
Same goes for the sprites.. is it/would it - be possible to add higher res sprites into the game. ?
I guess the legacy engine doesnt use Raycasting, but proper 3d polys - is there a way of using it for other projects ?.
I'd like to see some proper 3d objects, such as the weapons and first aid boxes - but personally I think having the monsters in 3d will lose the original feel of the game.
Anyways.. Great work guys !, cant wait to see your next release.
Paul.

Well Paul, you're in luck because many of these things are possible and others are coming.
The mouselook feature in Legacy means the skies are now meant to be taller than the original 128 pixels. The docs say 240x256 is the new size but because GL mode can look straight up I think they should probably be quite a bit taller. You'll notice Legacy stretches the current skies but doesn't do it enough.
To change things like skies, sprites, maps and things you need a wad editor. There are many of these. For building maps, DeePsea, Wadauthor, DETH, and DoomCAD work nicely for Legacy. For editing stuff like skies you can use Wintex, DeePsee, XWE and a few others. Usually you save these to a seperate wad file (called a pwad). You can find them all over the net. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smile.gif
Unfortunately hi-res textures and sprites aren't supported right now. Hurdler said he wants to do hi-res textures in the future though. The Legacy team is working on doing model support as an option to replace sprites. It's in developement and will probably first appear to replace scenic and static objects like you said.
Legacy also has piles of extra editing features including true 3D floors and a scripting language. Check 'em out if you want. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smile.gif

Support for a Quake 2/Half-Life skybox would kick so much ass. (I don't care for the Unreal/Zdoom style.)

Aliotroph?, your answer is like I should have made it... I mean: all is said, very clearly, simply, and your synthesis is perfect. I admire your capacity to do such things!!! http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/wink.gif

Thanks for your quick reply guys !.
Seems I've just gotta hold on for a while longer for the high res textures.. No Problem - I'll give Doom II another bash through..
Cant seem to find the enhanced water effects though ?.
By 3d floors I guess you mean that you can have rooms on top of rooms. !?
Just need support for Hexen, and I'm in heaven. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/wink.gif

Welcome PaulJG
you should also check out JDoom from www.doomsdayHQ.com (http://www.doomsdayHQ.com) (definitly if all you're playing is original doom or doom 2)that has 3d models that you can mix and match if you want objects but not monsters in 3d. It also has the support for Hi-res textures that can be downloaded from http://switch.to/doom2textures
oh yeah, this also has support for hexen & heretic (get the Doomsday all in 1 zip)

That would be so awesome if Legacy had even just high res sky boxes with animated sky's so we can make stuff like they have in Quake3. We could make some really astounding outdoor environments. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/biggrin.gif

I for one loved the options for the skyboxes in Unreal/UT. Quake 3's sucked, quake2 were good, quake's were too basic, and dooms were good until they needed to be bigger... Jdoom had a kool fix for it, legacy's i think need to be changed. Animated ones like in mbf would be cool to work with too ( a la hexen) IMHO
