View Full Version : High colors textures is a bad idea

If you allow high color textures it will let any idiot use a pic from anywhere and insert it into a wad. The good texture makers like Ola, afterglow, nick, and me http://www.newdoom.com/ubb/smile.gif probably wont use this since it takes alot more time to make a quality high color texture than it does to make a 256 color one. Seems are alot harder to remove. It lets amatures who dont know what there doing take a background from a web site or from a texture page an will end up with alot more low quaity wads then before. High color is a very good idea for changes in light levels and other tricks like fog or colored lighting since these effects are cool but look very crapy in 256 color. You could probably make it so that people can change the palete on each texture to get differnt colors but that will still help the amatures make shity wads. 256 color textures help seperate the good map builders from the wannabees.

The way halflife does it is have a 16 colour palette and each individual texture has its own 256 colour palette. 'g and I would make hi-res textures, and ola would almost certainly if he'd stop sniffing crack first.

i dont see how sniffing crack would do anything, snorting coke or smoking crack might. Having high color textures also makes bigger wads. I had the idea of having the engine displaying 16million colors and alowing each pic to have its own 256 color image this way you dont have to use doom2 pallete or have the same one on all your textures and yuo would not have to redraw all the origonal graphice so that they would fit your new pallete. With high color pics how do you plan to change player colors? I guess you could draw all the parts of the player that would be changed to one hue and have the engine change the hue but not the brightness or saturation. You could use jpegs but then legacy would have to decompress every image and they would be distorted. You can make a texture in high color then use a program that creates a pallete that best suits that pic and it will have very little distortion, you will have textures that look high color. See, there are much better ways to handle this than useing "high color textures" or images. I guess it wont matter that people will steal textures since i rarely see a texture pack without stolen textures. Even darken2 has them.

Well, Hi-color (or true Color) is how the OpenGL version of Doom Legacy works. All the 8 bits textures are converted to 16 bits or 32 bits textures, meaning you don't have to use the doom palette (even if it's necessary for now because we use the doom palette for converting 8 bits images to 16/32 bits, but that could be easily changed, as you will see when MD2 will be finished). But as you can see in OpenGL mode, some effects doesn't look the same as in software mode (especially when doom plays with the palette, of course... radiation, invulnerabilty, berserk).

Just use paint and save your 24 bit or 16 bits into 256. some colors change but it isn't too bad.

Oops-guess this really doesn't have much to do with this topic.

Oh well

Dont use paint for anything to do with doom! Use psp or photoshop since they have better ways of reducing the color depth. You can get a sharware version of psp from www.jasc.com. (http://www.jasc.com.) It has everythng that you can use in doom and there are cracks to take away the 30 day limit if you look in the right places.

Ah, and I see that "toke" is also a thief. How pleasant.

Max: well if you prefer being legit find yourself an entirely free 16 bit editor that performs well enough.

hurdler: yes that sounds pretty likely http://www.newdoom.com/ubb/smile.gif I never have got the hang of GIMP yet.
