Sidewinder game pad problems

[Doomplayer]

I am having problems using my Microsoft Sidewinder game pad with Doom legacy. It sees the pad, and says it by name, but says it has 0 axes, 10 buttons, so on... then says

dienumjoysticks(): setproperty failed

Am I doing something incorrectly?
