I'm using XFree 4.01 on a 3dfx Banshee with Doom legacy 1.31 (1.30 with replaced binary).
However, the -opengl switch still causes the game to use indirect rendering which is terribly slow.

So you mean not using DRI (>> 1fps) or rendering via Mesa in SW (approx ~1 fps)?
Do other applications work with DRI?? Are there any error messages? Which Mesa do you use?

Just read about the 4.01 Banshee drivers on linuxgames.com. They seem to be in an alpha state and only tested with SoF and Q3. So I'm a bit sceptical that we get legacy running if it doesn't work out of the box.
