View Full Version : What about modem support?

I'm sure you all love to play doom online, as do i. But, there aren't exactly a lot of server to play legacy on (not like team fortress) and of course there is always lag.
My doom buddies and I always have a blast CoOping through the levels. And the only port available with modem support is the dreadfully shitty Doom95! It's so simpler to just dial up across town and start deathmatching each other in coop because someone fired the rocket before i opened the damn door, then to worry about all the troubles of ip addresses and my isp crapping up again.
Is there anyone else that shares my only remaining want for Doom Legacy? and can't the code just be ripped straight from doom95?

I share your view with Doom Legacy supporting modem. And it is possible to do it through windows networking, but the truth is not many of us know how to get a dial-up network between 2 computers. (I don't know how either.) So I personally along with many other people would like to see Doom Legacy support modem. Unfortunatly, Hurdler already posted a message a while back to someone else who wanted modem and he diddn't seem to optimistic about Doom legacy modem.

it's pretty easy to do (esp. if one person has win98). I'm thinking of making a document explaining how to do this (both over modem and over serial/parallel cable) and sending it to the legacy crew to see if they'll include it in their FAQ.
If you are reading this Hurdler (or Boris), would u include this in the Doom Legacy FAQ or some other text file???

Bring on the FAQ, I can't wait to read about how to setup a modem/serial game, but I've used SER-7 with the dos version of legacy with no problems...
but I'd rather use the Windows 98/98 version anyways, but I like this chat feature in SER-7.
I wish I was a programing wizard...
then I could wear a kooky hat! WAIT A MINTUE,
I can do that anyways, WEE HEE!

Vengeance: Thanks for stepping up!! I'm asked all the time how to set up a VPN by friends of mine and friends-of-friends, and so forth. I eventually taught some close friends and they memorized how to do it, but THEIR friends complained that they didn't have any kind of chat program...
Don't forget to mention WinPopUp in your FAQ. It's very good for a VPN if you don't have two phone lines to give directions to the person at the remote machine. All you have to do is know either the remote machine's name or Workgroup/Domain name, or the remote user's name. Very handy and underused program.
Of course, if the Legacy Launcher had some kind of built-in Client/Server chat program once a client connects, that would be better =)

Hey people,
Thanks excalibur_z, likely will include winchat in the connection FAQ http://www.newdoom.com/ubb/smile.gif
Just writing to say that i did start the FAQ and then i had a power black-out (first time that's ever happened when i was doing something important... obviously i shoulda passed on all those damn chain mails :P ).
Anyway, i've started it again and this time i'll save it every now and then, hehe..
I have lotsa school assignments tho and trials r coming up soon for my jap class, so it won't be done in like a few days.. but ya can still all expect it relatively soon.
Chill!

I do not have a clue what you guys are on about... I wish I knew more about modems and stuff
Make sure that FAQ is utterly idiot proof for me!
