View Full Version : What gun do you have? Why are you puncing with a gun?

Umm, Hello!
I just resently got Doom Legacy, (well about 2 weeks ago), and I am enjoying it very much.
The only thing I think it needs is extended player sprites. What I mean by that is that I would like to be able to see which gun my friend has without using F12, and also, to get rid of the whole, "Look at me, I'm punching/using the chainsaw," and only seeing a silly looking marine swing his gun. http://www.newdoom.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif
This would make the game more enjoyible for me, and possibly, many others. http://www.newdoom.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
I remember reading that Id Software was going to put this in themselves, but, just like wall damage, it would require for disk space, (which in 1994, I'm guessing, a bigger game would out of the question).
This might make skin making much harder, but there should also be a way to maybe turn it off, or if using a skin that doesn't have the extra sprites, to just work as it would normally would.
Is this too much to ask?

Legacy does not yet support visual weapons (vweps). However I have been workings on new versions of the DooM marine with each of the different weapons available in DooM. I have completed two versions of the marine so far. One carries the pistol, and the other carries the shotgun. They are both available as skins on the Epidermis Emporium site, now being hosted here at newdoom.com. Although I am only working on them occasionally, there should be other weapon toting marines available in the near future. Genji is also working on a chainsaw version of the DooM marine.
It may be possible that these skins can be used with a future version of Legacy to provide vweps in the game. At present, the only thing you can do is bind each of the skins to become active with a key press, then try to remember to switch to the proper skin whenever you change your weapon.
I know it is a little inconvenient, but at least it is a start.

Good work on those skins, lovin the shot gun, (it's my favorite gun), but I made something you might enjoy...
http://www.geocities.com/dynamo_jones/playa1.bmp
I made this in 1 mintue tops, it was easy, and I could made a whole set if required...
(I found a set for former human chainsaw players sprites in a Army of Darkness TC wad
which I made into a skin, which I'd put it on my site, but geocities won't let me)
Bye!
P.S. How would I bind the skins? I'm not to good with the binding system not being much of a Quake player...

You may want to get in touch with Genji, since he is currently working on a chainsaw marine skin (which may be added to the marine pack). He informs me that he already has it mostly done.

Was just reading this post and I had a brainstorm... why not bring the amount of Controls per key is 2, and bind the skin with the weapon to the number? (except for the chainsaw/fist, i dont know how you would pull that off)

Basically, I kill **** . And I enjoy the living hell out of it.

It's impossible to bind something to a key and use it as some control at the same time.. http://www.newdoom.com/ubb/frown.gif

?????? im not sure you understand the quake console commands with the ; key
you can bind multiply commands with this key at least you could in quake ... for example
bind q "impulse 101;god"
you can in half life and all the quakes so far... so if it doesnt work in doomlegacy ..
im not sure it would ... besides when Md2 support is added ... who the hell will be even working with 2d player sprites ?

Who will care about the 2D Sprites? ME!
I love them, they make Doom, otherwise it'd just be Quake, or something worse..... (well, Quake, in my opinion, was pretty bad, so I don't think it could be worse)
Oh and by the way, I am definatley NOT downloading the MD2 models for Doom right now, no sir-y bob!
(Well, I do have to see if they aren't "low budget" style 3d models like quake don't I?)

Yes, it is definitely right, that DooM wouldn't be the same with 3D-models. It is the flair of 2D-sprites that makes DooM what it is, the greatest 3d-game of all times.

This is true... but I did look at the models, they are very nice, it was just a complete waste of time because I can't run JDoom (a very crappy port, no offence to anyone), at a good speed.
So I downloaded Meddle a quake/quake 2 model editor, and I enjoyed the animations for the marine, he really knows how you grab himself and then do a pevlic thrust of prue manlienees! WAH-HOO!
But still, I like the 2D sprites much better.
And another thing, if these guys are making models of the player, don't they have the abillity to solve the problem that started the first post I posted? I think so!
But did they? Ohhhh Noooo!

I want to know where I can get an editor that will let me extract quick skin graphics form pk3 files. then I could use WinTex to rebuild them for DOOM, But I still need Boingo's help.

Speaking of models, I like the one in the NEW DOOM banner, and in the NEW DOOM poll thing for "your favorite Doom Episode"...
I want that one!

Would this work?
bind 2 "use pistol; wait; skin PistolMarine"
bind 4 "use chaingun; wait; skin ChainMarine"
Something to that extent. I don't think Legacy uses the Quake2-born Use <weapon> command, but replace that with whatever it is in the game "impulse 2/impulse 4?". The Shotgun/Supershotgun and Fist/Chainsaw would be considerably more difficult though.
Of course I don't know why anyone would actually want to use VWep, because half the fun of NOT using it is the fact that you can walk right up to a guy with your "pistol", only to have him discover it's actually a Supershotgun =)
Once the Legacy team does their part to implement VWep, then they can force players to use it.

BTW -- The Doom Marine model is from Quake3, and .pk3 files can be opened with any unzipping utility.

Well, now I have to do is wait.....wait for my presious skins of the doom marine with different weapons....
I'll be grateful when they come out...
Oh an by the way, lieing is wrong, so I would never use the pistol marine and be sneaky and use a powerful gun... often

Ok, here is my thoughts on this
Personally, I don't like models. At least not in doom... with the number of polys being thrown around, the models have so few faces that they look like lego men. (accually, there is an idea... lego doom... little plastic imps and space marines in a lego made level... damn, I wish I was twelve agian)
The models currently available are not exactly professional either... the doom marine from SOG (the current source of ripped models) has such a large arse that he lookes like a baboon stuffed into a marine's suit.
All this, plus all the ports currently available with model support are unstable as hell and crash at the slightest provocation. It is stress that I could do without.
When (if...) legacy gets good interent support (at least for for the poor modem sluggers) will the sprites and models that different versions of legacy be compatible? Sprite model interface will be a ***** .
I also suspect that the models will be as jerky as the sprites, none of the smooth turning of Quake 2, more like the angled glitching of Quake. Yuk.
Personally, I am happy with sprites. They are as much a part of doom as the levels themselves. Sprites can be easily modified, while you need to be fairly talented to make models. As for Vwep, I think Boingo's current sprite work looks superb. I hope Vwep suport comes with legacy soon.
Oh yeah, and it would allow us to point at anyone with the BFG and shout "LAMER" in a very loud voice.
