I Just got ZDoom and JDoom, ZDoom Works Great, but JDoom runs at like 2 - 4 FPS and i can't speed it up. Do i NEED a 3Dfx card to run it? i have one, but not in the computer with Doom on it. If i NEED it i can switch the cards with little effort. Let me know guys. A little info on my machine is a PII 350 with 96 MB RAM and a 12 MB Trident vid card, i thought that would be enough to run JDoom in Direct X, Maybe i was wrong. Help me out guys, any info would be great.

Thanx http://forums.newdoom.com/ubb/smilies/cwm1.gif

Is that a trident cyberblade? If it is it should have 3d (direct 3d was the first supported standard with consumer-level cards) i think your card has opengl too, just make sure you have the latest drivers (and at least the dx version that the drivers say they need) and read what the drivers add/change. i have a voodoo also (v1) but i have it running in opengl on my savage 4 card decently, even supriseingly well at 1024*768 (and on a k6-2)

*also* you could try running the d3d test in dx diag (c:/program files/direct x/ i think)

....you know what, the best thing you can do, if you really don`t have any idea what your video card is, is to just keep on playing the way it is....

well it didn't come with a box or instructions or anything, i jsut put it in, the only thing it came with was the driver disc lol... so i jsut ut it in and it worked... oh well i guess... but yeah i don't use JDoom, i just use ZDoom, i say just play what works... not only that but i tried JDoom on the computer that HAS the 3dfx card and it wouldn't load the driver, so i say piss on it.

ZDoom GL, JDoom and Legacy are greatly enhanced ports for Doom. All three are going slightly different ways, but all three are fully supporting 3dfx and OpenGL. I follow the three of them and the advantages of JDoom (Jaakko Keränen)are: full md2 support, full GL Heretic + GL Hexen support, a very handy launcher. Yes, JDoom has the least fps of all three of them and in addition, there are bugs in the md2 apearance (scalling issues), but still it offers a great visual quality and is the only one port to support Hexen in Open GL. Did you try Legacy yet?

oh no, i havn't tried Legacy at all. I do like Zdoom though, it loads fast so can test levels i am editing and get right into them, to make sure a texture looks right or something like that. And the resolution is twice that of the original doom engine, soooo much more detail. I actually don't like the fuzzy look that some GL renderers make the characters look like when they get close to you, they get blurry. I actually prefer Zdoom. http://forums.newdoom.com/ubb/smilies/cwm4.gif

Well, I wouldn`t play anything without Open GL. With my Voodoo3 AGP, I am getting just a great performance + fantastic visual quality. Without 3dfx support, I would have swept Doom away a long time ago. Thanks to the tallented folks, who did miracles with the source code, I am still greatly enjoying Doom, Heretic and Hexen (next to q1, q2 and q3a of course). The charm that Doom carries, combined with the latest graphic technology, kicks ass.... completely.
