Bots are the way to play whenever your online connection is poor. Jan Paul Van Waveren who did the bots that came with Quake3 also did good bots for Q1 and Q2. He's done bots for every fully textured Id game except Doom. He's now working on the bots for Doom3, I wonder if he could be persuaded to do bots for Doom1/2. Particulary JDoom, since it already uses dlls for gameplay, he used dlls for the q2 bots. Anyone know how to get in contact with him? I really like JDoom, but fighting monsters can get boring, nothing like deathmatching with bots!

Currently there are no bots for JDoom. As many people have been asking for this, along with better networking support, I'm sure that Jaakko will have it somewhere high up on his JDoom "To-do" list when he gets out of the army (which is in about 10 weeks).
As for bots for other Doom source ports, there are bots for both Legacy and ZDoom but not ZDoomGL. Plus, as DoomNation is down, there is nowhere to get the DoomBot for ZDoom (http://www.doomnation.com/doombot), and if you go to the other doombot page at Doomworld (http://www.doomworld.com/doombot/), you will get a message that "Oh No! The Doombot is dead and gone. Sorry."
So, basically there are NO BOTS available for Doom right now. If you can get hold of the CajunBot or DoomBot then by all means give it a go but it won't be an OpenGL bot.
If you want to have the best single player Doom experience then JDoom still looks, feels and plays the best of all Doom source ports. Its also the easiest to set up and get going. I simply gave up on ZDoomGL as an alternative.
The most promising Doom mod with bots is the SkullTag CTF mod but I don't know if its gonna be a) single player b) non-ctf c) openGL d) have models.
To answer "McDonalds" question, Jan Paul Van Waveren did do the bots for Quake3 and also Omicron bot for Q1 and Gladiator bot for Q2, but what makes you think he's gonna go back to Doom to make a bot for a game that is no longer in the public eye? especially with Doom3 around the corner, I think he'll be busy enough. Plus, I believe he's in back in Holland studying and ID employee as a contractor.

This could put Doom back in the public eye, with Q3Arena people are now accustomed to deathmatching with bots. With the Doom1/2 map architecture being alot simpler than Quake bsp maps I don't think it would take very long to make the navigation system, which is probably the most difficult part of programming a bot.
