View Full Version : Setting the records straight...

Ok, I've heard the outcry about in the NewDoom community about the Doom 64 TC and such and I thought I'd set the records straight, where we stand and such. I'll answer any questions about the TC I can. And please don't flame me. I stopped coming to NewDoom long ago for reasons of my own, and have since decided to figure out my password, log on and quench any fires before they rage out of control.
Frankly, I know nothing about the tile dumper. I didn't know (or was oblivious)about the fact that it was being kept from the public. It IS public domain, but it's also our choice whether to disclose the information or any information we use for our port until the release.
We are VERY excited about the TC, and want people to be shocked and impressed what we can do with this little game we know and love called Doom. Doom 64 was thought impossible on the PC not too long ago, and we want the shock factor through the roof whenever possible.
I apologize for any problems that have been caused, but our intentions haven't been ill at all. We just want to protect our project from resource stealers and such, as well as releasing a quality project that will have players on the edge of their seats. And trust me, it's more than a TC now. You'll love it. It still holds true to the Doom 64 feel and gameplay, fresh for newbies and Doom 64 vetrans alike.
The Doom 64 TC is being made for JDoom. JDoom happens to be the only port that we can impelement the TC to be as close to the TC in any way. I know it's slow on some people's computers, and isn't everyone's choice of port, but there you have it.
Mouselook is planned as a cheat, and nothing more, since using mouselook in levels not designed for it will get rid of the need for some puzzles. Kind of like using jump in Ultimate Doom.
I'll answer any questions/concerns that anyone here has, if I can, and if it doesn't compromise the TC. Just ask.

Where did Newdoom get this flaming reputation from? Could it all be the handiwork of one Jon Wells? Last time I was on Doomworld, I found a newdoom parody site..... I mean that's just petty.
Oh and uh, no offense buddy, but YOU are a resource stealer. I'm one too for that matter.

We all are. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/tongue.gif
I don't see where Newdoom would get a flaming reputation. Other than a couple times when jerks have shown up and started stuff, there are never flames. And those jerks were really obvious jerks/immature kids wanting attention.
However, I've been flamed on Doomworld for answering a newbie question. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smilies/cwm3.gif

However, this is not the case with TED's fill routine. This slow, stupid algorithm will casually fill one plane of data in a painfully creeping manner. Press ESC when it gets confused." - John Romero on TED (Tile EDitor)

It'd be really good if there was none of this port/forum flaming... I think the community would probably be more productive as a whole. elbryan42: Don't think we are accusing you of flaming btw... We're just musing.
This community chest/NDCP thing is gonna end up in big competetive standoff. It's really good to see that some people are doing maps for both projects though. Unless they are deliberately sabotaging the other project by making an awful map http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/biggrin.gif

I don't think it's a matter of who's a resouce stealer but a matter of who's going around stealing eachothers ideas http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smilies/cwm10.gif .
Quite honestly I think if we hadn't been so nice in releasing info on the TC all the stupid bullshit about the graphics thing wouldn't have even surfaced. I find it funny how before that there were no signs of such questions as to how to rip from the Doom64 rom and the fucking bull shit.
After it was made more widely known that's when all of a sudden those who wanted to decided to take it upon themselves to look into getting the resources as well. It disturbs me...alot. I don't care how many rights any one has quite honestly, if that mattered as much as everyone acted like it does then alot of things wouldn't happen that do (I'm too tired, it's 3 am, I'm not going to bother giving an example, if you want one tell me and i'll post it some other time).
People have their reasons for things being the way they're kept, forbidden or open, for better or not. The big break down is that quite honestly people need to tend to their own projects rather than trying to get off and take a project others have been working and seemingly try to take it into their own hands and try to take away from that which makes a project unique, that being that it's put out by a first and then followed by a secondary, extras or followers, if you will.
As Elbryan42, I have problems with people here too, but not everyone. I really like a few of the people here, shit, to the extent that if I ever traveled and was going to a nearby location, I wouldn't mind meeting up with them. Others on the other hand are down right rude, egotistical, obnoxious, and spout nothing but incessent jabbering that you can try to make sense from but when it comes down to it it isn't worth the time of day. I'm not flaming anyone, and for that matter don't want anyone presuming I'm talking about them.
While each individual is a unique in a world of many some uniques can take on similar actions. I never get involved in such matters as this until I feel I need to, and in this case, I do. It involves something that I've spent my personal time on since April of 2002, and if there's someone out there that's willing to take that away from me on any level or at any degree I will say something. In saying that I mean not that someone is taking over the whole entity that I've worked so hardly to move towards completion on, but that even someone trying to release that which we are looking so forward to releasing as a whole to our public, except in pieces, still takes a little something away.
I believe all of this that I've said perfectly makes sense. If I get flamed for this I swear I will take a Hiatus from NewDoom. I believe that as not over reacting but as prepared response for someone/anyone who might get carried away and try to shove everything I've said back in my face. I don't put up with bullshit, which many of you know around here. Those who don't pay attention or don't know probably don't give a shit. Either way, I have 8 friends over right now and need to tend to that. Goodbye

Sure, all TC people are resource stealers in a way. What I mean by resource stealers is if someone worked hard on something, whether being a level, ripping, graphics or music, and it gets stolen by someone who refuses to do the work themselves. This has happened with my sounds (before the wonderful PSound program) and claiming them as their own. Heck, the static is even the same on them. That's when I took the sounds down from the Doom Depot. Sure, I recorded them, which I guess is resource stealing, but I worked hard on them, and to have someone steal them just pisses me off.
That's one of the reasons why the TC is under so much cover. If the textures, or maps, or sprites, or coding were to get out, we're afraid that someone (we know who to look out for) will claim our hard work as their own.
As for where a person resides, NewDoom or Doomworld, I think it all depends on where your friends post the most, and which one is your style. A person who's at home at Doomworld, like me, learn the terrain, who to ignore, and who to shout down because they're being an ass. But if a newbie gets on Doomworld, posts the wrong thing, and gets flamed, they'll take it the wrong way.
It's the resposibility of the people on the forums, not just mods, to keep peace. If there's a newbie, and they ask the wrong thing, or just be a newbie (we were all there) if an asshole flames them, they're out of there. I wish all of the community would just get along, compared to being split into 3 groups. Doomworld, NewDoom, and the others who don't hang out at either.

Well, to be honest, I think anybody would have wanted some of the D64 gfx if they could have gotten them. I'd given up looking for this kind of tool about a year ago... agh, I can't be bothered typing any more. I should really go back to my map, it's a demanding puppy.
lol... post truncated.

I think as a community we're doing pretty good these days. It's just a few asses who pop up now and then and try to stir up shit.
I never played Doom 64 and never seen it being played so when it was revealed that there would be no mouselook in a JDooM port it made me wonder why. Now I know and I look forward to playing the TC when you guys get it finished. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smile.gif

Just to set the record straight there was some talk of it a while back on the Legacy forum. I think Kaiser was still working on DSV4 at the time...
As elbryan42 said, if you think-before-you-post on Doom World you'll be okay (yes this probably goes against something I may have said when I first came to this forum). I think the split between the two is bullshit as well.

Hey Sparky, I still have all the levels that were made for ZDoom, nearly all the hell levels. I'm going to talk to Elbryan42 about it, but I might go ahead and finish the maps and release a ZDoom version way later since I got so much other stuff going on right now. It'll be a way lesser version thatn JDoom of course, but I know some people's computer can't handle JDoom, such as The Hogdog Man.

elbryan42, The problem I had with Auto-aiming was that the Y axis became Forward/back movement which was annoying as a mouse user because I had two buttons set-up for that. Last night that Auto-aim problem was solved. So I'm not going going to bug you or Melfice about mouse-looking from now on.

That guy.. erghh.. I would ALWAYS see him on Doom Connector 2. He would piss EVERYONE off, and also, I believe he stole some material from you guys.
Anyway, I for one do not care (much) about this tile dumper. I really look forward to seeing this wonderfully sexy (hehe) TC.

Hey elbryan.....I visit your site regularly to keep myself updated on the outcome of the TC...I have been a fan of Doom 64 way before I even got my hands on a N64....and I did 2 years ago, and I don't regret it one bit...Hell, I still got the Gamepro with the first screenies of it... http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/biggrin.gif I can't stress enough how long I have been waiting for someone to port it over to PC....and sincerely, now that it is I can't wait for it to come out. As soon as it does I'll be getting JDoom..... http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smilies/cwm1.gif Melfice is one that knows...I used to go nuts over it and kept telling him that I wished you guys the best in this project of yours. http://forums.newdoom.com/UBB/smile.gif
As far as resource stealers go, lots people do it, we all know that....whether they get permission from whoever they got the stuff that's not theirs is a different story.....I've seen many wads with rips of any kind (sfx, music, sprites textures, flats, whatever....) and they give credit to the original authors....I've seen others that don't of course...but I know if I ever want to borrow something from someone I will ask them first...if they say no for whatever reason I won't use it, period.
